Great video. Sound wise both are good and with a bit of playing with the EQ on the amp I reckon most players could get either one sounding just how they want it. Thanks for highlighting the neck heel on the two guitars, I think that is the most important difference between the two. As someone with short fingers the Harley Benton is lot more playable for me than other LP style guitars.

I guessed B for the Tokai because it seemed warmer and a bit more refined. However, there was not a sonic difference that justified the price gap. Maybe the neck, the design, construction quality help fill the gap. That means the cheap one is very good, indeed.

That HB squeal was an orgasm! I use Harley since 2002 and still have one of their first curved back nylon strings which plays and sounds way better than an ovation that’s 10 times the price. Budget guitars but they are great. If I have the extra $$$ I’d get a Gibson LP, but I’ve used my HB SC550 in serious professional recordings and it sounds HUGE given that you have the sound in your head first and know how to mix. Cheers and thank you

I personally liked the cheap one better. i bought a brand new Harley Benton SC450 in 2017 for under $200 dollars delivered from Thomann in Germany . they called it lemon flame. it had a bright orange edge which i hated.i sanded off the top and under the color found a coating over the entire top that appeared to extend out to the edge and became the binding. I stained it yellow..tinted the edges a bit darker, threw in some Stew Mac Parson Street Pafs, and modified the head stock to the gibson shape. Rounded off the sharp horn then relic'd it. It became my bar beater..looked great, sounded amazing and played really well..

I've never played a Harley Benton but, I've owned a 1985 Tokai Love Rock LS-80 for 20 years, and can say that it is a fantastic guitar. I've fitted it with Gibson Burstbucker Pro's, and it does everything a Les Paul type guitar should. I've owned dozens of guitars over the years, Gibson, Fender, Jackson, Charvel, Washburn, Yamaha, Peavey, Aria, Epiphone, Eggle, EVH, Ernie Ball, Ibanez, PRS, plus others that have all come and gone, but the one guitar I've never considered selling, is the Tokai.

As someone who owned a HB LP as well as a Gibson LP at the same time, this comparison was easy for me. HB is simply missing that 5 % top end frequencies (I am not talking about brightness) and generally has a more 2D sound if you know what I mean. The top end and 3D sound is what I prefer and that's why I eventually sold my HB. Nonetheless, someone less cork-sniffy is absolutely well served with a budget HB.

I didn't know which was which during the blind sound test but I did prefer the brightness and tone of A over B. I never play super high gain so the squealing would never be an issue for me. I'm glad it turned out to be the HB because I'm not a label snob and would never pay a $2000 premium for an inferior tone (to my tastes) . Single coil tap is also a huge bonus, imo. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for HBs now. I live in Canada and have never seen one in person.

Budget guitars nowadays are like upper mid-range when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. I have a HB tele and it's comparable with at least Classic Vibe/Mexico, sound wise and finish. But you have a great point about the $230 harley benton, as far as being able to play a gig. My $200 turser, which I modified, certainly makes it to the stage along side the Tokai, they both sound great in their own right. For musician's the instrument is merely a part of what we do. Hi, Shane- Sorry if it seems like I dropped off- I got a Roku, and stream youtube content on my TV, so I can't comment, or like videos unless I do what I'm doing now. I got this one wrong- but I think it's interesting why- I used to own a HB 450+, but it was from before the Roswell pickups- and so, even though the neck played great, it was so very dark that it would get lost in the mix. If you added reverb, it would just disappear almost entirely. So, I heard B as a little darker and thought that has to be the Benton. I've owned a ton of HB guitars, and whittled it down to 2- I've got the TE-52 and DC-580. The TE, in my opinion, sounds as good as the Squires, but has a slightly flatter radius, so is more comfortable for me ( I grew up in the shredder '80's- so anything under a 12 inch radius feels odd to me) and the DC 580 is a real nice alternative to my SG's- a little more fretboard, and brighter pickups, so real good for lower tunings. But otherwise, a lot of the Harley Benton stuff just doesn't work for me. I'm good with my Epiphones, my PureSalem, and my SX guitars, for the most part.

With a good EQ pedal such as either Boss or MXR (10 Band EQ), you can make the Harley Benton sound as good or even better, and if you upgrade the pickups on them like I did with either the DiMarzio Super Distortion set or the Seymour Duncan JB Hot Rodded Set, you'll have an amazing sounding LP style guitar for a ton less then the original. I bought them for gigging and recording not for collecting and hoping to keep its value and even increasing it as an investment. So by changing to high end pickups, machine heads bridge and tail piece I now have killer guitars for sooooo much less. Hope that helps.

I got it right. I don't know if I'm the only one that hears this, but one thing that I always hear with cheaper Les Pauls, even with the epiphones, is that they always sound kind of out of tune when you play a big distorted chord, even if they're perfectly in tune. I really don't know what component causes this to happen. Is it the pickups? Or the hardware? Let me know if you hear it too.
@Имбирнаяпеченька-ю6ь4 жыл бұрын
You're not the only who hears it. Well, I believe it may be caused by different reasons, but the major one is poor fret work on cheaper made guitars. Some frets are not pressed well, some are set at slightly wrong places, some are not polished well, it all causes dissonancy in chords when the strings are pressed, so some of them are slightly overpressed then needed, so it makes the pitch go a little higher. Also the cheaper the guitar costs the higher probability that it's going to be not set up well in terms of string action, string tension and intonation, so it will cause a player some discomfort while playing maybe making him (or her) work the sound out harder than usual which will also effect the sound. I personally guessed the Tokai on this video by two major signs - brighter sound and a lot more joyful face while the dude was playing it. You can easily spot he almost hurts his ears, when he plays that big chord with distortion on Harley Benton because of dissonance, while he looks alright doing the same with tokai.

Definitely prefer the Tokai. HB's pups sounded darker, muddier, squealed more. Actually noticed it more with distortion. clean the tokai sounded better but not as much. thing is this probably means the Tokai has a nicer pickup set which one could buy and throw in the Herley Benton for a lot less then the $1915 difference between the guitars. Really shows that the difference between (almost) bottom of the barrel and (almost) top of the line is there but not huge. to be fair HB is probably making nicer guitars at that price then most other companies, and Tokai as well. In fact it may just be that HB skimp on electronics to get better woods/assembly/general Quality.

Shane can you tell us are the necks one peace on the Tokai? If not how is it configured? I guess HB is 3 parts and headstock and few first frets are separate peace from the neck. Then heel has one peace more to achive needed thickness. I find it very important that neck is one peace true the whole length. On the video Tokai looks like Gobson neck, one peace accept for the side peaces of the headstock.
