I agree with that assessment. I'm not a violin player at all but tone is very important to me when I buy guitars. Tone can also be very subtle. From what we get sound wise in this video, the #4, and #5 were my favorites. But what really never comes through in video is how it feels in the hands while playing, and that is the best point to start from for me personally.

I picked #5 too. It's like the richer you are, the less you get for what you pay for. Spending $10 million for $200,000 worth of violin and the rest is just to brag that you can spend an extra $9,800,000 for nothing.

thats probably because Number One best is usaully placed there by the maximus snobs and usually follows all the snob rules and construction to the maximum (weather or not its actually better) and thus second best that gets there by less snobisms includes more inovations but snob opions keep it #2

I've got to say that I like the Gagliano over the Stradivari. The Strad has very crisp and harmonic tones, and the Gagliano has more soul and weighty resonance, IMO. I like that full sound that melts into the next notes more than the Strad and gives a more visceral feeling in the gut. Plus I can use the leftover 9.9 million to buy a nice house to keep my instrument in.

I'm a violinist and was super curious to see if I'd be able to recognize the "best" violin. I placed the first three violins correctly, but I kept being uncertain about #4 and #5. There are probably a few factors here which we can't recognize as listeners, regarding the playability. Rob talked a lot about how it felt to play #4, how the instrument wanted to give back a lot, and I think this is something that only the player can percieve best. To me, #5 sounded nicer than #4, but that's only half of the violin's personality. The other half is how it connects with the player. So I'm curious if I would still have ranked #4 above #5, if I had the opportunity to play it, myself 🤔

Hi Ania, similar assessment here, I also preferred the brighter tones of 5/Gagliano and would use it to play something like the Sibelius violin concerto, but 4/Strad when I went back and listened and compared just the last 2 violins, the Strad def had some attitude and grit, i can't really explain but it had a unique sound which set it apart from the rest. It's too bad they didn't have a Guarnerius violin to compare which has some deep tones on the G and soars on the E and it has the ability to project like 1/DiMateo violin

Some observations I made about the Gagliano vs the Stradivarius. The Gagliano has a “bigger” sound the Strad has a much “richer” sound. The Gagliano is for the assistant concertmaster while the strad is for a cocncertmaster or pure solo work

Not sure about prices, but : 1: Sounds like you would expect a good Violin to sound. 2: Barely audible, but pretty soft, so tolerable. 3: Didn't even notice it, because of how average it is. 4: Rich sound, and a bit *too* rich honestly, like eating pure sugar. 5: *Perfectly* balanced tune, liked that one the most.

I honestly didn't like how dark the $10m strad sounded, but #2 was so obviously the cheap amazon one. This makes me feel better about buying a $700 Schuster&Co as my first violin. The last violin to me sounded the best it seem to have the most deepest sound of all of the violence. If I were a violin player I would probably choose number five because to me it has the most basic level sound in other words it hits the lower notes and just sings much better in my ears. Thank you sir
@stevengu1253

The same with me. I preferred the final violin. It sounds beautiful, deep, and rich. However, the Stradivarius is better because the sound projects louder compared to the last violin while maintaining a nice, deep quality in tone. The final violin would be really good if you're not doing a large concert solo but instead something more intimate.

The problem here is, we, the audience hear the stored digital version of tones through a micro-speaker. All the enriching frequency of the more expensive violins are filtered out. I had the same thought, but also this one: Scenario: One of the great classic composers, after becoming famous, presents this little “Italian ditty”. It is given tremendously positive accolades by audiences and critics, who cite “a welcome and happy respite between the more pensive selections. Makes one involuntarily bounce in their seat, bringing blood flow back to the extremeties and joy to the senses.” Plus, it made for a good test, I think; I, at least, had the hardest time choosing which sounded better for that “song”. Except violin #2, that one was universally hideous. That said, a $70 Amazon violin is exactly what you get your 10-12 year old first to make sure they stick with it before investing in a better one. I started on one made from pressboard (it looked like cardboard, or a clipboard).

From someone that plays viola and teaches violin, 2 is clearly a cheap violin that sounds muffled and is pretty clearly not made very well. You can also see that the black tuning pegs are very simple and the more expensive violins have more ornamental pegs, they don't do anything sound wise but a well made instrument looks and sounds beautiful. It has four fine tuners where as professional violins and violinist usually have one as they can muffle the sound. You can also see 2 just looks really cheap compared to the rest. There ends my rant, I'd be happy to explain more if you'd like :)

Fun fact: The real secret why a Stradivari sounds so remarkable is actually the WOOD that they're made from! When he was making his violins, most of the world was going through what's been described as a "mini ice age" where it was so bitterly cold for many decades on end, so things froze up really hard every winter and also MUCH farther south than "normal" as well. Even the River Thames would freeze so completely "solid" people used to have a winter fair/festival ON the river ice! But what's that got to do with the Stradivari right? Because the climate was so damn bitter cold the trees wouldn't grow as fast, making for MUCH smaller, tighter growth rings and EXCEPTIONALLY fine, tight wood grain!

@@macgyver5108 I heard an interesting story on National Public Radio (possibly on All Things Considered) some 20 years ago, where a chemist analyzed a piece of wood from a Stradivarius (and I think a section of a Guarnari cello (I hate that my memory is so poor -- and getting worse as I get older). When he put those samples under a microscope, he noticed that the Stradivarius wood grain was "puffier" than other woods on instruments. So he set about analyzing the curing chemicals (and probably processes) used in the Stradivarius. He came up with a formula that closely resembled the Stradivarius formula, then cured the wood with that formula. I do not recall if he built one or two of those instruments, and/or if he had a luthier construct it (I don't think he actually built them). He was a decent violinist, though, so he demonstrated it at a recital. The sound was absolutely AMAZING, even through an FM radio signal such as Minnesota Public Radio's transmission in our area. I really, really wish I knew how to find that story again, because I would love to hear it one more time, and relish the wonderful tone that brand-new violin generated. So besides what you say, I would have to concur with the NPR story, and say that curing may well have had as much to do with the Stradivarius sound as anything else. But your comment is certainly to be noted.

I've been playing almost 60 years, and I would be happy with 1, 4, or 5. Though my preference is actually for the de Matteo; it actually sounds like a Guarneri del Jesu; it's _loud_. Number 3, the Serafina, is strictly a low-cost student instrument, and number 2 is what is known as a "violin-shaped object," and is a waste of firewood. I wouldn't even recommend it to a beginner. It not only sounds muffled, it sounds difficult to play, and will discourage the student. The Strad is nice, though I really don't hear a significant difference between it and the Galliano. To me, they are a toss-up. Might be my aging ears. I rated them Strad, Galliano, de Matteo, Serafina, and eBay in descending order. But the Strad sounded best to me on only two of the three passages. The third passage I chose the Galliano as the better instrument. Go figure.

I know what you mean about 4 and 5 being a "toss-up". I preferred 5 purely because it had a darker tone. They were both powerful, clear, a little bit beefy, beautiful and rich in timbre (but not too messy with overtones). The Strad, was very focused and possibly it sounds quite "bright" in person. Many microphones don't pick up some of that magic Strad sound.... it gets lost through our speakers unfortunately. The Gagliano had all the qualities I mentioned above for the Strad but personally I found it had more character and almost sang out like a viola at times. If I was offered either of those violins for free and I was a world-class violinist with many concerts ahead of me: I would take the Gagliano! ....with the proviso being that the Strad didn't have a better projection in the concert hall.
