Cheap Written Off Crashed Volvo XC90. Can it be fixed?

I bought this £675 Volvo XC90 with the idea of towing my trailer, join me as I inspect the damage and find out why it has been written off. Apparently the damage is structural... 🤔
Are these cars good for towing? should I just keep my vw t5 and restore that instead? let me know👇

The XC90 is a Euro4 D5 so it's 185BHP and 400NM+ of torque also has AWD, The Volvo D5 is one of the best diesel engines made and the few issues they have are easily ironed out and it won't rust anywhere near as much as that scabby VW Transporter.

A Cat S write-off just because of a bent lower suspension arm? This generation of XC90 is built like a tank. It is a Volvo after all. They're quite well engineered and easy to work on for the most part. These make for great towing vehicles and it would easily handle whatever you are going to tow. It would be an idea to get the front wheel alignment checked. It should be done whenerver any suspension or steering parts have been replaced. I've owned my 2003 XC90 since July 2021 and the VED on mine is about half of your's (it has the same D5 engine) so maybe you should find another XC90 which is cheaper to tax if you like XC90 ownership. There's pleny of XC90 content on my channel which might be of use to you but you look like you're quite handy with the spanners.

The 5 cylinder Volvos always sound like that, also once the battery is flat, you normally get loads of fault codes appear, which should clear afterwards.

Id keep the van , you can fit more in it even a mattress for a kip if you have to travel far :) I cant see you not turning a profit on the volvo .Great video once again , i watched your older videos over the christmas, they were great :)

Might be worth putting the bashed wheel on the rear axle so less risk of affecting the steering even if it is balanced. Also, you might consider doing longer pieces to camera using a fixed tripod so the video image doesn't wave/wobble around so much.

I had a 163bhp D5 XC90 to tow a 1000kg caravan. It needed to be revved and it was much better if you put it in manual mode for climbing hills. If you left in drive all you got was torque converter whirr and more revs as it tried to keep it in top gear, but putting in manual mode and holding it in gear it was much better. It'll drink diesel without towing, I got 30 solo and about 23 towing.

I would keep the van , more practical for collecting parts etc , chuck a matress in the back if you're out over night , and , to be honest , easier and cheaper to repair than a 4 x 4 with an auto box , great channel , just subscribed

Another great fix. Personally, I would keep the VW van. I think it will be more practical for your type of work, or even as a partial camper for those long distance car collecting capers. If all is good with it you could have it as the official channel vehicle. It’s good to have one practical hauler as a keeper. I think any upgrades needed for towing would be easier and cheaper on the van, too. Those Volvos have a bit of a following so I think you should sell it okay if you price it fairly with the Cat S still on. You have evidence of what the damage was to it, so it’s not going to be a mystery damage situation for the buyer. Then put the money towards the van. Just my thoughts on the subject, of course. 👍🏻

click the "read" button on the end of the indicator stalk. Volvo likes to hide warning messges in the info center "time for regular maintence" might not be the only one. you'll have to click through. I have the same spec and color XC90 except it is the V8. tows amazing though it prob isnt helpful since you have the D5.

Bro that XC70 (at least the D5 model) pulls 5 tons without even breaking a sweat. You will max out your legal capacity long before you reach your technical capacity.

I would choose the transporter, the vw owes less i think and is more useful being a van but could do well if sold but the volvo is probably more comfy , though the road tax would scare me off that ! nice the volvo had loads of fuel when you got it ! i have now started looking at copart , just dont like the membership fee !!!

The analysis will show you had a high hit ratio on the van , if you look at Dan chambers and dte both gave success on the van on YT you won’t get close on the xc Reality is not sexy , so sell it , your not going to get rich because it probably owes you a £1000 already , it’s got damage and it’s recorded and finished it’s worth £2 k + ? Unfortunately the vans not good at towing the weight limits on the T5 is too low you need 3-5 tons to make it worth while Hope that helps best wishes

i would keep the van,,the XC would am sure tow nicely but the van has all that space in the back to shift about other parts without messing with seats and trashing the XC interior

POP up screen is the sat nav, it either has a remote in the car or on the rear right side f steering wheel....If its chuffing through airbox then it might be the hydraulic lifters need doing.... Remove front A pillar covers and make sure the sunroof drains are clear and lift the Amp from under the driver seat and check for water...(DON'T un plug the amp with battery connected) The the for regular service light...Turn Ignition to Position 1, press and hold the button to the right of warning screen, turn ignition to position 2, (keep button down) ignition lights on (NO engine start) the orange triangle will flash twice (let button go on second flash) DO no let it flash more than twice) release button and ignition off then on and warning should be gone.

vans arent great for towing as theyre fwd so all the weight of a trailer and any other load in the van is on the rear. This lifts the front up and heavily reduces grip, you will not have a fun time up hills.
