I'm getting into audio again after a long time away. So I'm building my audio system now. How well do you believe this will sound. I'm getting a SONY SA-CS9, I'm getting a set of BOSTON ACOUSTICS HD5 I'll have them hooked up to a TOSHIBA SD-6109C? Another question my bedroom is roughly 10 feet x 11 feet. I know pretty small. Would you recommend adding a larger set of floor speakers I've got a vintage set of PIONEER (I believe were from the 1990s). Looking for advice. T.I.A.

Hi Randy, amazing review..Can I ask a quick question, I am complete beginer in this HT journey, just bought myself a Kef Q950, Kef Surrounds, Denon x3500 (old one from my cousin), SVS SB1000 and AudioaLab 7000a.. Currently Denon is running the Surround and Centre, and the SUB.. Audiolab is running as pre-amp with those Kef950s.. I am currently happy with the setup, but want to try connecting SVS to AudioLab... Not exactly sure with the cabling part, will it be a Y Splitter type RCA, 1 Male to the "In" socket in SVS to 2 Male RCA in the Pre-Outs sockets in the AudioLab

I did it a bit differently myself! I was building a system on a serious budget. I got some used Tannoy Proto-J bookshelf monitors, a Sony STR-DH190, and a Klipsch R12SW (subwoofer) from a firesale when they were discontinued. But the R12SW doesn't have speaker level inputs, and the Sony unit is only 2 channels - so what I did was I bought a line-out converter (Access AX-MLOC725) to create a set of RCA outs, piggybacking off the speaker wire, which I could then run to the sub. And it actually works really well. The line-out converter is intended for automotive use, and it even has a power wire, but the signal system is passive - the power wire is just for amp switching, but not required to pass signal. I also used a little insignia DAC to connect it to my TV - and the DAC is... Not great, but it gets the job done well enough, kind of. Ordered a Schiit Modi 3 the other day, hasn't come in yet, but it should be way better than the Insignia one. All in all I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $650 to get a system that, IMO, punches way, way above its weight. And the line-out converter allowed me to use a miraculously inexpensive sub that otherwise wouldn't have worked. I'm quite proud of myself for that one

The speaker inputs on the SVS are for left and right channel. From your amp you would run a separate set of speaker cables to the sub, and a set of cables to the speakers. This is a clarification from the SVS manual.

Yes! Even if the sub has high-level out, run 2 sets of wires. The high-level out is just a chunk of metal in the signal path to your main speakers, plus depending on the sub's location, using the high-level output could make wiring difficult to nearly impossible.

Many thanks for this video! I thought you might be interested in the following, alternative approach to connecting a subwoofer to your sound system if your audio card or DAC has no 'subwoofer out' and/or you want more control over the audio signal that goes to the subwoofer but are not able to achieve this by other means (e.g. through software): - Split the left- and right-channel analog audio outputs of your audio card or DAC; - Use low-pass FMOD plugs to filter the higher audio frequencies from the duplicate left- and right audio outputs that you want to use with the subwoofer; - If the subwoofer does not have separate inputs for the left and right channels: merge the output of the two FMOD plugs using an audio Y-splitter cable; - Send the merged signal to the subwoofer. This is how I added a subwoofer to my PC audio system, with a crossover point that was appropriate to my other speakers.

Excellent tutorial! While I didn’t learn anything, I sure wish I had known about you when I first started out. You very clearly and succinctly lay out a lot of info that many audiophiles just “pick up” along the way through trial and error. I’d highly recommend this for anyone just starting out. On a side note, would be nice to see you do some side by side comparisons between budget pieces and more expensive pieces. Eg, how does that emotiva amp compare with a parasound that costs six times more? Well-done.

This is a useful tip-based video. I've been trying to connect a B&W ASW608 sub to a Rega Brio that has not pre-out and, in fact, was doing it wrong, or at least the hard way. Something is off a bit here my brother. About 6:17 you talk about speaker level input. The third way.... You mention putting in the speaker lines(you tap across 4 binding posts on the amp output) into the sub. Where you also then tap, on the sub's 4 binding posts. But on the sub, you actually tap 2 posts up top and say - speakers input. Then you tap the lower 2 posts at 6:21and say... speaker outputs. The 4 binding posts on that SVS sub are all inputs. 1 pos, 1 neg for each - right and left. You need 8 binding posts or connections on a sub for high level input from amp to high level output for your speakers. I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this to you. Figured I would chime in and help a bit. I mention this because I'm upgrading across the board. I have a Schiit HEL 2e running into the Aiyima a07 as a mini desktop solution. I have the KEF Q150's paired with an old Sony SA-W2500 sub. It has 8 connectors for this 3rd way. However, the sub is sloppy and slow. I also have the META's arriving either tomorrow or Wednesday to test out. I wanted to pick up this sub you have featured. It looks as though I cannot hook it up this third way with my current setup. I do need a sealed, moderately accurate, somewhat fast sub... This SVS seems to be right for my budget. With that... I need your help. Heck, I just need help period. I am considering ordering the Aiyima A3001 - www.aiyima.com/products/subwoofer-amplifier-aiyima-a3001?variant=29384225554507 Would the 3.5mm output from the A07 to the RCA inputs on the A3001 via 3.5mm to RCA connect help me get connected to this sub, through this sub amp? Quick, Dirty & Cheap! Got any thoughts? Is this a credible 4th way? Wondering how to dial it all in if it's doable. Aiyima sells the lower powered sub amp paired with the A07. Thoughts? Side note: D320's came today... box was really damaged. Wharfedale is offering me a refund. Would have loved to test them out. Maybe put them into my kids gaming setup. Oh well. Thanks for your time and attention. Maybe a Subwoofer 3.0 video is in order.
@boldstrike
@boldstrike Жыл бұрын
The 3rd way to connect the sub left me a bit confused, because on that one, you have 4 terminals, unless it is R and L (IN) and R and L (out) you can't get connection out to a pair of speakers, you can only connet to one of the towers (left or right). So as I see it, to pass the signals to the subwoofer and then to the speakers you would need 8 connectors, 2+2 IN where the amp connects and 2+2 OUT to both towers. If those 4 you have are all IN , you need an amp with 2 channels A+B where A connects to the towers and B to the sub, on the amp you have to select A+B to run at the same time. A=speakers B=sub

Hi Randy - BTW you **CAN** hook up a subwoofer to an amp's speaker terminals even if they sub doesn't have high-level inputs. You just need a small passive device known as a "speaker-level to line-level converter" - these are often used in car audio. They are reasonably priced (a.k.a. "cheap"!) and a nice option for people who don't have a sub out and also don't have speaker-level inputs on their subwoofer.

Randy, there is yet another way of hooking up a sub! For subs without speaker level inputs, you can use what's called a line level converter to turn a high level input into low level RCAs. This is often used in vehicle audio systems but it works just as good for home use if your receiver has no RCA output and your sub has no speaker level inputs.

Great vid again. Just thought I’d pass on the 4th way to connect to a sub if you don’t have a subwoofer line out on the amp and also don’t have high level inputs on the sub. Jumper the speakers either at the amp or the speakers and run them into a line level converter. You can then join the two rca’s from the line level converter into a single rca and plug that into the sub line in. (I do this with the Reisong A12 into a JBL stage A120p sub and it works a treat)

Have attached the cable to the sub out, and place the other end into either the left or right RCA in on the back of the sub. Seems to work, but my question is am I losing any frequencies? My second question is regarding the phase. This older polk has zero or 180. I switch it back and forth but don't know that I actually tell a difference. What is phase actually doing?

Subjectively, I think this sub sounds fantastic compared to my previous sub which was the Polk you mentioned. I know Yamaha gets a lot of hate, but I dig this sub - especially for the price which was $130 on Accessories4less. It's punchy and blends nicely with my 5.2.2 setup (with 2 bass shakers). Curious what you think of Yamaha overall, I have the NS-F150 towers and I think they are pretty good.

This is extremely helpful to a beginner like me. I bought a new TV on Black Friday which has led to a cascade of additional purchases I had no intention of making, including a Denon receiver, 5 Polk speakers (front and rear + center) and this sub. The receiver has been a BEAST to understand. I'm sitting here last night with all these boxes everywhere and I'm watching TV on my laptop because I couldn't figure out why I had no sound. Good morning Randy. Could you rank the Elac unifi ub5.2 on scale 1-10, in terms of soundstage, and then also imaging capability. How do you think the higher priced Elac speaker compares to JBL stage a130, how much of an upgrade do you think it is? Thank you :) !

Thank you for this wonderful video. What is the smallest subwoofer would you recommend? I have very limited space and currently have a polk psw350 that came with a setup I bought used from someone. I just feel it's too powerful and taking up too much space for my small apartment living room.

Thank you for the video! I noticed that the sub in the video has a single speaker-level input and a single speaker-level output. Does it mean it would only get the bass from one of the channels? The Sony SACS9, however, has two of them, so would I connect both R and L channels to the speaker, and then both bookshelf speakers to the sub? Is there an advantage, in terms of signal quality to the sub, between connecting it in line over connecting it through a headphone output of my amp? (I am using a cheap Moukey Audio Amplifier 2 Channel) Thanks!

I’m looking at adding a subwoofer and not sure how to pick one since my amp is 2 channel 700 watts RMS per channel , I was wanting to know what power rating in a subwoofer to look for in a dual coil that will handle 700 watts rms and if I parallel it that’s 350 watts rms for each coil? My amp is 2ohm optimized so seeking a 4ohm dual coil subwoofer. Is that what I am needing to seek and do and it will give me the full 700 watts RMS to the subwoofer once is it paralleling it from 4ohm to 2ohm?

Hey, I have a 5.1 vizio surround sound system connected to my tv via ARC cable. Can I connect an additional subwoofer to the RCA out of the tv? I want the existing surround sound + the additional subwoofer sounding at the same time? Do tv's send sound "out" signal to all the ports at the same time?

I have an old Sansui amp and 2 Sansui speakers, 8 ohms each. I just got an optimus pro sw-14 passive sub, 8 oms, with in and out speaker jacks. My concern is ganging up on just the A or B side and changing the impedance too much for the amp, or will the amp compensate? I don't want to heat this amp up. The amp is rated for 4 - 8ohm spkrs., but separately on A + B

Hi Randy very helpful thx just got a Martin logan dynamo 700 it has a SWT wireless option I plan to use. It has two rca ins from my Yamaha rx-a1040 home theater amp. I haven’t turned the amp around to see if it has two sub rca outs or one. The sub has its own amp, has both lfe and rca inputs. With the wireless looks like there is only two rca ins so lfe is out when using wireless. I’m running 2 channel stereo and have martin logan towers for my main front speakers. Super small room so I’ll move it around till I find a good spot to place it. Am I doing this ( hook up) correct or any recommendations? Please let me know. Thx Mike

I have a question, if like that svs sub it only says speaker input can you still come out from those same posts to the bookshelves? Or if it’s an AB receiver should I A to the bookshelves and B to the sub ? Or keep it like The first question coming out the sub inputs to bookshelves and only using A on the AB receiver?

I have an anthem str integrated amp 2 channel only that has ARC room correction. There is a crossover and bass management on the integrated amp. There is a mono mode and a stereo mode with L/R outputs. On the rythmik lv12m sub I just got there is an LFE input and L/R line inputs. Is it better for me to use an rca output into the subs for stereo mode or should I run a single rca output and into the single LFE input?

Would appreciate some guidance. Thinking of purchasing the SVS SB1000 pro, I have a Yamaha NR303D amp, which means I will have to go with your suggested option 3, as there is no dedicated amp connection; the two speaker wires will be connected to the sw, but couldn’t clearly see where the sw speaker level output wires would go?. Additionally, applying this method would the sw volume be controlled directly through the main amp, or would I have to jump between the main amp and the sw (which may be a little painful to manage). Would appreciate your thoughts. Cheers!!

I have these on the way from Amazon: AIYIMA D05 + SONY SSCS5 + POLK PSW10. The amp has a single sub out but the sub does not have an LFE and so I ordered a long Y RCA cable to be able to connect the two and have sub placement flexibility. Will the sub's volume adjust with the amp's remote same as the Sony's with this connection, or do I need to use the speaker level inputs connection in order to have that functionality: (16ga from amp to Polk speaker level inputs and then 16ga from Polk to Sony's)?

Hi Randy, I bought myself a SVS 2000 Pro and I want to plug it into my Monster power conditioner but the power cord is a good 6 feet short. Is it ok to use an extension cord with the subwoofer? Can it have a negative impact on sound and do I need a certain AWG wire, maybe 12/14 AWG? Can’t seem to find much info on the subject so I am assuming it’s ok to do. Thanks

Say, if I have Aiyima A07 power amp you recommended, can I connect to subwoofer by this way: Aiyima A07: 4 speaker output posts-> 2-pair speaker cable -> 1-pair main speakers AND Aiyima A07: 3.5mm output (it's also full range audio signal right?) -> 3.5mm to 2-RCA cable -> Subwoofer: 2-RCA input Then we match subwoofer to main speakers by adjusting phase , low-pass frequency, & volume, right? Final question: once done, do we use the main volume knob on Aiyima A07 to control overall listening of both main speakers and subwoofer? Or we need to use the source volume control such as iPhone or CD player or DAC to control BOTH?

I've got the Polk Audio RM10 5.1 speaker setup with the subwoofer. The sub isn't nearly as fancy as the one you showed here, and I'm sure not nearly as nice either. The sound is so-so, but I'm not doing any fancy crossover stuff. I still have to research if my receiver is even capable of that, and I've had it 4-5 years. Even so, it's an entry-lvl receiver with not much power. I'm currently looking into upgrading the receiver - also used but should be better with more power. But hey, w/ the low budget I have, the speakers will have to do. I'm upgrading the front speakers soon, but it's also the budget option.

I'm not sure if I'm setting mine up correctly, so was hoping you can steer me to the right direction. My subwoofer has high-level input and LFE. I hooked up my front speakers via the HLinputs, and set the cross over of the Front speakers to Full Band, then in the subwoofer, have my crossover set to about 120. On the receiver, I also have my subwoofer crossover set to 120 and connected a cable to the LFE input on the sub the .1 So far, I don't hear issues or clippings, other than every once in a while my subwoofer would turn on and off unless I unplug the LFE from the sub even if the receiver is already on standby.

Just picked up a subwoofer at goodwill and was so stoked that I didn't check to see if it had a gain/volume knob and it doesn't. I have a passive “sub” (a cheap 8 inch…) and a home cinema amp with only a “pre out” for the LFE. But I’m only using it to run 4 identical speakers in a quadrophonischer setup. Can I run the passive sub from the 35W center channel? I can do the low pass thing on the output and flip the phase via the cables but that’s it.

When you connect via the speaker level out and in on the sub do you use TRS jacks from a focusrite interface line out using speaker wire instead of the usual screen wire. Can you simply use Mono quarter inch jacks with speaker wire for both the sub and the monitors or will this create hum?

I have a Denon AVR-X1600H receiver that has 2 Pre-Outs labeled 1 and 3. Is that the best or most common way to hook up a sub --just run a cable to the LFE on the sub? Also, this is unrelated, but I noticed that when I play music, the vocals only come out of the center speaker. The front speakers are much quieter. The Denon rep. had be turn the volume up on the L&R which did nothing. Is this normal where all the vocals come out of the center speaker? I've never had one of these before.

I have the SB-1000 Pro and an Emotiva A1 power amp -- I've been running two speaker cable wires per L/R out - 1 set to the Sony SCS5 Bookshelf & 1 set to the SB-1000 Pro. This is what Steven Gutenberg said to do and it seems to be working well. This video says put the sub between the amp and the speakers? I'm not sure if will work with the SB-1000? Maybe I shouldn't try to fix what's not broken, but I wanted to know if there is a superior method? Thanks!
