A firmware update came out in August that adds filters: Fi: Fast and Low-latencey filter F2: Fast and Phase-compensated filter F3: Slow and Low-Latency filter F4: Slow and Phase-compensated filter F5: Nonoversampling filter I just updated and will try to check them out in the next 3 days, After that, I'm gone for the month and will dig deep into it in November. I use it as a DAV with my Schist Freya N, Lokias, and Asgard 3, usually with my HifimanSundara cans, and it surprised me as to how good it sounds compared to the IFI Zen DAC v2 in the chain. It's seriously a not-insignificant step up in terms of clarity and balance. It's a noticeable improvement.

I ordered one up, and it came about a week ago, much better than the price. Bought the unit for the remote and the balanced outs. The jury is still but I think I prefer my Cambridge Dac 200m which is less in your face,oo warmer richer sound. Sometimes in your face is just what you want and I don't have yo get off the couch. 😊

I ordered mine via Amazon Canada, and it arrives this afternoon. This will go into my main Schiit stack (Freya N, Lokius, Asgard 3, currently fed by an iFi Zen Dac II). My main headphones for this stack is the Sundara. I'm looking forward to see what this little unit does for the sound. Based this review, I'm surprised it didn't make to your top 10 DACs on your recent video.

It has an ESS ES9018 dac and an OPA1656 based analog summing and active filter section w/ film type precision R’s and C’s. Doesn’t even need a large linear power supply. The power brick it comes with is just fine. One or more of the older models probably has an AKM dac and whatever that entails. Edit: chip model typo fixed.

Comparing your opinions to the “scientific” reviews that believe any differences heard between equipment that measure similarly is mental trickery, imagination! You are very compassionate to these unbelievers by suggesting that we simply try a little “cheaper” snake oil and decide ourselves. Good advice! Occasionally I get a little scientific myself and swap the items I’m comparing multiple times, easy, sense I’m not trying a dozen other items. There’s always a difference but often it’s often different than what I’d originally believed. Reviewing is tough because the environment changes and a system that sounds great Monday can be the dog’s breakfast Friday so thanks for doing your best and hopefully enjoying it.

The ability to perceive actual details in sound is very similar to an ability of playing a musical instrument on a decent level. In both cases not everybody is capable of doing it. Here comes the helping crutch: the measurements . Which may help to provide a basic picture, but cannot tell the whole story. A person that wants to distinguish the differences in sound of a device first of all needs that very essential capability. Then, of course, the rest of the equipment connected to it must be capable of "not hiding" or flavouring those differences, too. And last but not least, one must have a time and the mood to do it right. It mostly means to forget about the world and focus on just being here with the music. And to focus on the To "see" the music behind the closed eyes: the proportions, the separation, i.e. the perceived positions and the size of the musical instruments. Not just the dynamics and flavours, and maybe basses and sibilants, as most of the people do. Of course, only well recorded music can serve the purpose here, so most of the music videos out of the KZbin is out of discussion here. Here is where the real differences are hidden, and no Armin is capable of measuring those. People are not a lab equipment, in fact, people "do" listening via their hearts.

Ran my Airmotiv's and my Philips Fidelio and have tried everything to get it sound better. The solution at this point was to unplug the SMSL and plug directly into the WiiM. Very watery, sibilent sound. Not sure what I've done wrong. Ifi hip dac is far superior in my opinion.

Hey Randall, do you think this would pair up well with the Sabaj A20H headphone amplifier? Both are $119 each. Initially I was hoping to pair the amp up with the A20D dac, but Sabaj doesn't make the standalone anymore. Currently, I have the Sabaj A20D 2022 version. In fact, I bought it after I watched your review on it. For the price, it really is almost unbeatable, even compared to higher priced units. After trying many, many DACs, even the new FiiO K9 Pro ESS, I came to the conclusion that at some point, more $$$ doesn't translate to better audio, at least not to justify the increase in cost. So I am looking to set up a solid, decently priced Dac/Amp combo and spend all the extra money on better headphones. Currently, I have the Edition XS. But as much as I love the sound... it's not very comfortable (hate the headband). I am looking to move up to something higher up the ladder. What are your thoughts?

Surprised that it doesn't offer unbalanced, RCA outputs. It appears to only support XLR and an 1/8" aux jack. But at just a little over $100, an aux to RCA cable or XLR to RCA adapters being added to the overall purchase would still be viable for those on a tight budget.

🤔Reviewers generally have a honeymoon phase with everything that they review that they like for its price, so they are always sounding like, whether it’s $100 or $1000, the best thing since mom’s apple pie, but the reality is they will always justify their previous opinions with the “you generally get what you pay for” perspective, when you corner them on it, or use technology enhancement over older product to explain. There's plenty of dongles based on the 43131 these days that can push up to 2x more power than that, I don't understand what they messed up here. My teensy HiBy FC3 has every bit as clean of a signal in terms of THD+N, and with the right impedance adapters (150+ ohms) can be tricked to auto-switch to a 100 mW @32 ohms mode, that's like 1.7 dB lower max loudness, and the damn thing costs 10x less.

My 2 cents.. Super small form factor is not a benefit because there’s not enough weight on the table. You know the cables will push the unit around, signal connections can become problematic, the ability to have the real estate to put the right kind and sufficient number of connectors etc on the unit goes out.. The list goes on and on when a device is too small. It’s just not worth it.

I'm eyeing this to go with the new Fosi ZA3. It has a balanced input in addition to an RCA input. That means I can run my laptop and CD player into the DAC and the power amp allows that and my turntable. I wish DAC's were common with an analog in/out to handle a turn table, but at least this new amp from Fosi has two inputs with a manual switch.

@@MrGorpm Agreed - and the pre-filtering used, as well. Some units just use whatever is set up by the chip maker, and some units do their own processing - maybe that is the significance of the XMOS chip CAM mentioned?

Balanced XLR at this price-point is a bit silly, unless you have a sizzly Topping amp of course. Most people don't know what to do with with xlr.

Great review , well not. Can somebody -please show WTF the unboxing looks like without hiding how they are eventually powering this MF? The manual is crap as found at the SMSL site. Says you can't use a usb-c fast charger but needs 3Watts WTF. What do you need to properly power this thing Help. Your review was Great , but every body skips the unboxing.
