I just got it. And installed. Aligned and run straight away. It honestly has an amazing spectrum, you are right.. and these soft bass sound. Deep and soft then straightaway fast and punching. Great with pop, rock from the 80’s which is what I listen the most. I tried also jazz .. good. About orchestra in classic music, honestly something is missing in the details. But as you told, it is a first great upgrade for novices. Easy to install and setup.

For the money, it makes more sense to buy an Audio Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge and enjoy the added benefits of a microline stylus! Not only is the stereo separation and frequency response better but, the stylus will last much longer and will perform with almost zero IGD. Microline styli sit deeper into the record groove and can make older records sound quieter because they track portions of the groove walls that ellipticals and spherical styli never touch. More detail and accuracy then elliptical styli, too. I would persoanlly never go back to an elliptical stylus. They always exhibit some IGD.

Great review Randy! My first cartridge, back in 1980, was an Ortofon OM10. The description you gave of the 2M Blue sounds like the house sound hasn’t changed at all over the years. For my return to vinyl playing last year, I went for the E3’s big brother, the G1042. Not a cheap moving magnet by any means, but a stunning cartridge, nevertheless. Happy record spinning. 😉

Hi Randy, just noticed I never subscribed to your channel which is weird, I have been a fan for months. So here's another sub. Anyway, that's not what I wanted to say. I wanted to thank you for this review. Knowing what I know about your tastes in sound and my own purchasing this cart was an easy decision after seeing this review. Since oktober last year I have slowly been upgrading my system. Started with a pair of lintons, went with a marantz pm8006 which I could get at 2/3 the price in a summer sale a couple of weeks ago, and last Wednesday replaced the stock cart on my audio technica lp120 with this goldring. I up the mids a bit and lower the treble and to my ears this system sounds like magic. Tone controls for the win. No harshness, yet still detailed with a meaty presentation. It's this cart that tied it all together, I love it and cant stop spinning records. I have been looming at the nagaoke as well, but since you can get it included with a technics sl1500 where I live, it was an easy decision to go with the goldring after this review. So thanks, for giving us sound advice :D

I know why I subscribed to this channel, I just like Randy's style of presentation so much, so authentic, like the good buddy next door ... and all very entertaining and informative at the same time with a down-to-earth instinct for the essential, for me personally one of the best and most honest HiFi reviewers here on KZbin. Unfortunately, some of the devices that Randy recommends are very difficult or mostly not available for me in Germany and sometimes they are a bit more expensive because of shipping.

Man, thank you so much. Yeah. There are a few that can be had. I’d hope you could get Goldring in the EU though. Based out of UK. I wish I could get my hands on some Mission speakers.
@MrJueKa2 жыл бұрын
@@cheapaudioman My pleasure, Randy !! The "Goldring E3" cartridge is available only from a handful of HiFi dealers in Germany. Also at "Amazon Germany", there it is even the cheapest offer for about 100 EURO (102 USD), but it is called "Goldring GL0058" for whatever reason, it's only in the product description that you can see that it's something with "E3". Unfortunately, this "E3" is not supposed to be suitable for Thoren's tonearms, if you believe the customer reviews ... but fortunately there are a few other very good sounding and affordable cartridges for my elder Thorens TD 280 MK IV. But there are some other smaller or not so well-known manufacturers who offer little or no offer outside the USA, or certain products are only produced for or offered in the USA, like the "Sony SSCS5" for instance. But that's the other way around with some products from Europe either. Ordering in the UK and having it delivered from there is currently much more limited or even impossible due to significant delivery and transport problems caused by the "Brexit" and the "Corona Pandemic" ... or currently by the war in the Ukraine ... at least that's how it's told or that's how they want us to believe it, and if products are rarely delivered, then the prices are significantly higher ... in Germany it is the same with all products imported from abroad, much of it partly just profiteering, but that's how it is in western economic capitalism and its "eternal growth", that's nothing new, but that is another topic that fills the entire evening.

But I wanted the sound quality it was said to provide so I had to buy a Sumiko Pearl to install as every review of the Ortofon Red has been negative. Now I just have to figure out how I add density to the carbon fiber tonearm to help the record groves not throw the tonearm around and to prevent the sound from the needle from echoing inside the ultralight, ultra solid tonearm. Over here in the UK the Goldring 1042 has a legendry reputation and the one to beat at the price. Superbly balanced with no sibilance and a BIG step up from the Nagoaka and the Ort Blue. If you can't stretch to this wonderful sounding cartridge you should try the Goldring 1012GX which is really kick-ass and punchy. The great thing about these Goldring cartridges is that the only difference between them in the 1000 series is the stylus profiles. So you can start with a 1012 and end up with the magnificent 1042 by just swapping the stylus !! Winner winner chicken dinner !! 😊

2:20 that moment when you said "threaded inserts", memories of the North Star V8 surfaced, that the threaded inserts would always pull out in 70K, and the solution to that, created by Jake of NorthStar Performance, which was to stud the block (if in condition to be studded) and torque the heads against the studs, a proper solution for that issue of improperly heat treated aluminum blocks. It was an issue I didn't experience during the 7.5 years I enjoyed floating home in that 2003 STS I bought off a lease, I did, however, experience how precise GM's engineering standards were, that is, all parrs would fail precisely upon reaching their designed lifespan. (that is some bad juju right there, that will haunt them a long time)

So much cheaper in the UK. It cost me the equivalent of 95 dollars last year😀 but it's the other way around with emotive equipment here. The ERC4 Cd players costs the equivalent of 300 dollars more🙁

Matching your speakers and cartridge is as important as the amp - (horn low powered blah blah) I’m also vinyl psychotic and addicted to sound.

Funny! I I ordered this a couple of days ago because Techmoan mounted it on his Denon DP-47f. Can't wait to try it out.

Hey cheap audio man I have actually asked you this question before but never got a response. I have an audio Technica AT-LP120 Connected to my receiver using line out and the sound while using the line one input on my receiver is much lower than if I’m let’s say streaming Spotify to my receiver. I read online that it just could be that the built-in preamp in the turntable is not very powerful so I was curious if I use an external preamp would I be able to increase the volume of my turntable instead of having to turn my stereo volume up so loud?

Had the same situation. Both the the Schiit Mani and Ifi Zen Phone have different gain settings. Set the gain higher for both. Wasn't perfectly matched with streaming, but closer. Keep in mind most streaming apps have volume normalization and records do not lol. I turned off the normalization and changed the gain settings to find the one that matched for the same album in both lp and streaming. Then kept it at that gain setting. Kept the Ifi Zen phono. Just be sure to turn the normalisation back on after you have it sorted. Both phono preamps are available on Amazon so you can see if it helps and if not return them...

Some external preamp let you boost the gain. But it is generally something people just live with. It's due to modern audio signal standards which range from 2 to 4 volts. Old days it was 1V or even less.
