In this video I make a super cheap, functional greenhouse with fold up walls for your garden.
Let me know your thoughts!
DIY greenhouse on a budget! How to build a greenhouse:
Here's What you're going to need.
A staple Gun. Staples. A knife with a sharp blade.
A circular saw, a drill, an impact driver. And some wood screws. At least 1.5 inches. I used 2 inch screws.
You can get away with just using a hand saw and a drill or a screw driver. But power tools makes life easier.
Optional tools include a spirit level. A speed square. A pencil. And a carpenters belt. All handy but not required.
Materials you'll need are.
For the frame. I used 4 8 foot 2x2s. And 4 8 foot 2x1's.
I ended up buying some 2x4's for my original design. But I didn't use them, as you will see later on
For the walls …You'll also need a roll of Polyethyline… (Poly) or green house plastic.
If you're not familiar with poly, it comes in various sizes. I got 6mil which I believe is the thickest you can buy. It came in a huge roll and unfolds to 102 inches wide, is 58 feet long and covers an area of 500 square feet.
More than enough for this project.
You can also see in the video that my poly says keep out of sunlight. If we were expecting this green house to last until our grandchildren inherit it, this poly would not be a good material to use.
There is green house plastic on the market specifically designed for this use.
Essentially, the UV's will start to breakdown poly ofter time, But, the house I'm living in is getting torn down next year so I only need this green house to last me this season.
I was lucky enough to get this poly for free from a job site, so when this green house is finished I will only have spent under 20 dollars on materials.
Look around. You can get most of these materials for free if you know where to look. Construction sites often through out lumber and gently used poly.
In the end, I don't think it looks half bad.
The walls fold up. I screwed in screws half way into the frame then hooked the string on to the screws. When ever I want to fold up a wall, I just unhook the string. Then in reverse when I want to secure them again.
Nice and easy. An idea that worked surprisingly well!
And for like 20 bucks and a day outside in the summer, it was well worth it.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you're not a subscriber of my channel yet? Now's a great time!
Thanks very much for watching! Let me know if your green house turned out as well as mine!
Note:
I don't provide exact measurements for this build. This video is designed to show you the general idea of my design. Trust me, It doesn't get much easier. Build your green house to the dimensions of your garden and have fun!

Exactly and since he didn't mention exact dimensions, one has the ability to make it as big or small as they want. I'm going to be using thicker plastic though 6 mil is not thick enough for the location I'm in I'll be using 10 mil or thicker. I like this idea best because I rent the property I live on and if I have to move it or something I can just take it back apart
@lifefixx
@lifefixx 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicholecrouch311 I'm pretty sure I used 9m but I could be wrong. Either way. I no longer live at that address but, the structure is still up... and its about 3 blocks from the ocean where it gets quite windy and I never had a problem with it getting damaged. Perhaps the secret is it's not an airtight structure. air can still pass through it.... and using lots of staples lol

This was very clear. It was exactly what I was looking for; no fancy measurements, no fancy carpenter language. A couple things I would do differently: I would put some kind of plexiglass on the walls/top because it doesn't look heavy enough to resist New England weather. And also I want mine to last more than a year. I have some old windows in my basement and I think I'd put them around the bottom of the frame to give it some extra weight too. But that's just how I would tweak it. And the video is so clear that I could do it without a lot of hassle. Thanks!

Good thoughts. We are in the Midwest and have similar issues - wind, cold. I appreciate this for the idea that you don't need much to start. I have seen a few people make really nice greenhouses out of old windows. Man, if I could find a bunch of old doors and windows (for cheap or free) I would be all in for that!

This is great, thanks. It's good to see someone show something that is functional and cheap. This would be easy to modify if it needs to be bigger or smaller with added support beams on the sides. We have an local source of free pallets, so I am thinking of using them as a base. We get high winds here and I don't care what you spend it will eventually be beaten up. I appreciate this "on the cheap" version. More money to buy good seeds with!

Would a teepee type structure be cheaper?
@lifefixx
@lifefixx 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I personally wouldn't enjoy a teepee. Pros and Cons would be: A teepee design would be difficult to build an easily accessable door. Also difficult to have the retracting walls for airflow. Also unless you build it huge, the narrowing of the top is going to greatly reduce the space for plants to grow. It might be a cheaper option, however, i dont believe its much cheaper. That shape might be more aerodynamic and wind resistant tho.

@lifefixx
@lifefixx 3 жыл бұрын
There are no hooks. I used thick plastic, and lots of staples. It's located a few blocks away from the ocean where it gets quite windy. Almost a year later, and the green house still stands. I think possibly part of the reason, is the 3 fold-up walls. They aren't air tight and allow air to blow through it.

Hey great video! Love that greenhouse system! We just made some for ours as well and we're really happy with how they turned out. We used conduit to create a hoop house shape, and wrapped plastic around that. One suggestion I have is that we found that stapling the plastic together was a bit flimsy so we ironed it together instead which works terrifically!!! Check out the video we just posted about it! 😃

So you're basically using about 30meters (~100feet) of 2x4's. How on earth are you getting 100feet of 2x4's for $20? In Australia, that's about AUD$160, so $125USD. The cheapest you can get 2x4's in Australia is at about AUD$5 per linear meter, so about USD$1.18 per linear foot.

Yes. Polyethylene isn't supposed to be exposed to direct sunlight. What will happen over time is it will lose its malleability and become brittle due to the UV rays. It takes a while for this to happen though. There is specific greenhouse plastic you can buy that this will not happen with - however it's expensive. And as specified, this video is about how to make the 'cheapest' green house. If you would like to build a green house that will last and is more expensive, there are lots of videos on youtube that can direct you. Thanks for the comment :)

Hey. Great questions. I originally had a voice over for this video which I failed to include. The poly / plastic sheething says "keep out of sunlight" that's why I showed the label in the video...... The reason is..... Any kind of construction poly like this doesn't do well in sunlight. Transparent, certain types of PVC ..... I can't explain why, I don't know exactly why.... but I know the UV rays from sunlight basically over time start to disintegrate the elasticity and integrity of the product...... The reason I used just a simple product like this, meanwhile showing it on camera..... is the house I am living in is getting torn down in a couple months ....... So the longevity of the green house walls wasn't a huge concern. I do believe I mentioned this in my video. But thanks so much for inquiring and asking :) ...... Your is pretty cool-I feel a little duped by your title. You probably didn’t mean to make it seem like click bait, but you don’t say that you got the plastic for free. So, I guess it’s an okay $20 frame😉

How did this hold up over the year?
@lifefixx
@lifefixx 3 жыл бұрын
I originally built this at a property I was living that was going to get torn down a year later. I no longer live there, but to the best of my knowledge it is still up and fully functional. I didn't mention in the video that I attached the frame to stakes I drove far into the ground. Also, because my fold up walls allowed a lot of airflow, as well as the aerodynamic design.. I never had a problem with wind. I lived 5 blocks from the ocean where it got quite windy, but perhaps this design wouldn't work in a windier environment. Again this video was not exact blue prints for an indestructible green house. It was a general idea, for a cheap, functional green house. I wouldn't recommend it in areas prone to hurricanes and tornados.

Fair enough. You're right. I already had a garden bed to install it to. If you don't, an easy way is hammering any sized scrap wood into the ground, and screwing the greenhouse frame into them. :) Hope that helps.

@@mikeclizzy2138 Yeah PVC is a good option. Not sure how attaching plastic would work out. It's ridiculous what is now cheaper than using the cheapest spruce wood now. Hope it worked! Tuck Tape would probably hold really well to pvc, although not look very cosmetically appealing. What size did you make it? I'd love to see pictures!

Hi. I don't really see how that could be. You can make this with hand tools. I don't imagine a hand saw, screw driver and a stapler costing you more than 30 bucks - Especially when you can get them used for really cheap. Good luck!

The way you advertise it cheapest diy greenhouse $20 means you can get all the materials for $20 and that is not the case at all and it didn't say free greenhouse and it looks like almost $100 worth of lumber and plastic.. I feel like you click bait everybody it looks like a good greenhouse and it looks like it will work but you lied to your community. Way 2 get more views!

@@calvinbuxton5382 Hey. No where in my video or the write up did I say you can purchase all the materials or tools required for this green house brand new for $20 dollars. I payed less than $20 to build this green house, and anyone with a little bit of time and a head on their shoulders can too. The materials are easily found for cheap. The price varies. depending on where you live. Apparently where you live, cheap plastic and wood costs $100. I'm sorry to hear that. $20 green house - Did I include the cost of the gas to drive to get my lumber? No. Did I include the cost of hydro to charge my power tools? No. Did I include the cost of the tools? No. Did I include the labour cost to pay myself? No...... Is that click bait too? Thanks for your feed back.
