this is blowing my mind. i've played uke and guitar for years now, strong affinity for uke though, but i tried out my partner's bass and now all i wanna do is learn to play. this looks to be about the size of my baritone uke. seriously, i need one yesterday.

Great vid man! I've been interested in these for a while now but I've been afraid it wont be loud enough. I can't really tell but it seems a bit louder then I would have expected, When you do the review vid I would like to see it compared volume-wise against a flat top steel string acoustic (regular guitar) , It would be awesome if you could get a friend to jam along with you as part of the demo. Just a suggestion! Keep on Keepin' on!

Hey nice vid. I'm currently playing a guitar for like 6 mos but I think a bass would really fit my music tastes. I'd like to learn it but what should I get first as a beginner a regular acoustic bass or this uke bass?
@stephencoxbass
@stephencoxbass 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you want to go with it. Acoustic bass is harder to push the strings down and requires larger stretches. U-bass is more portable, easier to push down, and has a slightly different sound (especially if you get one with rubber strings). The acoustic bass has more fullness on every note, and maybe slighly less string noise than the U-bass. However, the rubber strings sound a bit more like an upright bass if that's your goal. If you travel by plane a lot, have wrist pain, and/or have limited space, U-bass for sure. Otherwise I would suggest playing both before buying to see what sound you like better.

If you can't get both, then it depends on a few factors: Do you want more of an electric bass sound or an upright sound? If you want the earthy upright sound, go with U-bass. I feel like full scale electric is more versatile, but it also has higher string tension and is less portable. "Rubber" (polyurethane) strings may take some getting used to, and even the metal roundwounds for U-bass have a few differences when it comes to sliding and bending notes. I hope that helps!

I hope that's not the case! Bass ukuleles require a much lighter touch, and making sure you are pushing down in the center of the fret (pushing down right where the dots are...) is essential. That being said, I still had some fret buzz with mine, and had to adjust the truss rod a bit to get most of it out. If that doesn't help enough, you can try getting a higher nut or putting something under the strings at the nut to raise the string height a tad...I hope this helps!

It seems to work that way sometimes. I buy the Kala U-Basses through Uke Republic instead. That's a good route if you would rather support a smaller business.
