Great stuff, very interesting. Still trying to get a 30" (half size) guitar to do a Bass Uke conversion. There's not much in my area but I'll be going to town soon and there's plenty of stuff on marketplace apps, hopefully. I'm about $40 in (pickup w/ preamp, tuner and eq) bone bridge and nut, Aquila PU strings. I'm hoping to get a Valencia half size for about $30. I'm going to dowel the holes for the existing tuners, and cut the tuner racks down to 2 per side. If this doesn't work out (or maybe even if it does) I've got plans for a 3D printed version. I've made 3 Ukes on the 3D printer and learned a lot each time, should be able to get something playable, but to be honest if I can get a conversion to work I probably won't be spending days on CAD design for a print version any time this year. The main challenges for 3D print stringed instrument is that you definitely need a truss rod in the neck, and it's difficult to get the balance right for the sound board to be both strong enough for the string tension and acoustically resonant. My last designs were resonators because of this, with a violin style bridge post. It was the loudest soprano Uke you've ever heard.

Came back to say that when I tried your tip. I couldn’t hear any difference the day I did it. So I simply gave up. And today 1 year after, I decided to plug the bass and all the strings volume were even. I then went to play for 3 hours and all everything sounds good! So I’m betting that It needs time to all the strings sit properly.

@stephencoxbass17 күн бұрын
The U-Bass is a bass ukulele. Kala makes the brand name ones, but there are many different brands that make bass ukuleles as well. Kala has a range of them for various prices (between $200 and around $1500 depending on the model). Amazon sells most brands of them, or you can contact Kala directly. There are lots of distributors around the world, though I’m only familiar with the ones near me. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

The links suggest that you offered upright and bass guitar lessons via Skype. Is that still true? I have some well-defined goals for which I am seeking an instructor: •BASIC upright technique (posture, grip, and bow grip); and •contemporary electric bass guitar technique (slapping, tapping, ghosting, etc.) I’m thinking maybe 2 month’s worth? Have played since 1970 and can read, but am deficient in those two areas. Do you think you could help? Holy crap, you’re local! (I’m in Marietta.) I could take lessons in person!

@stephencoxbassАй бұрын
It's a bit high, but the strings have a nylon core, so it's not hard to play even with the slightly higher action. I think it's higher because it was originally intended to have the polyurethane strings that vibrate wider than metal strings. Thanks for watching!

Your Personal Linguist sez: Every letter in Hawai’ian words is pronounced. So “pahoeho” (which is a type of lava) is pronounced “pa-HO-ay-HO-ay,” NOT “pa-ho-ho.” Otherwise, this video ROCKED. Thank you! The good news is that the iconic bass riff (I labeled it the bass solo) is the easiest part of the arrangement! Fun fact: it was one of the first bass lines I ever learned by ear, even before I knew that the song was called “The Chain.” You can learn that part, let me know if you have any questions about it. Cheers!

It'd be really easy to do a Drop D tuning for the bass line.

@BeatleVerseАй бұрын
I know this might be a dumb question, but what strings would you recommend for a fat, bassy tone (similar to those 60s bass tones)? Also in your opinion, how transferable are Uke bass skills to regular bass in your opinion? Thank you
@stephencoxbassАй бұрын
String wise, the polyurethane or the flat wound strings are most similar to the 60s tones. As far as transferring skills, it’s the same frets, mostly the same techniques overall, just a bit more stretching and you have to pluck a bit harder. You may have to mute a bit more on full size electric as well. Thanks for watching!

I did this But Now the loose bridge pieces rattle against the pickup which creates buzzing sounds and volume issues when connected to an Amp
@stephencoxbassАй бұрын
Hmm, just from cutting the saddle? Is there something you can put under the pieces that can help them stay in place and not rattle? Maybe a thin piece of fabric? What did you use to cut the saddle? Maybe the blade was too thick?

They need to come out with different Poly formulas, as a solution to getting the right sound. I think it could solve the problem.

@MartinKrijgsmanMusic2 ай бұрын
There is a non destructieve way to fix this. Just put paper shims between the saddle and the piezo pickup at the problem string (always one or both outer strings). Probably requires restringing a few times, but it fixes the problem without destroying the saddle. Also handy for keeping it's resale value.

Great solution as well! That might be a great thing to try before this method for sure.

Thank you. The secret for me is to play lightly and turn the bass knob down a bit to not send too much low end to the amp. I also have the volume between half and 3/4, not all the way up. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

I'd never heard that opening song before ("Green Tea", I think you said?). I loved it. It had such a comfy, mellow groove, and the percussive elements really sold it. I was only able to hop on for a minute or two earlier (when you were live) but had to drop out because of this stupid thing called "work" that I go to five days a week. It really interferes with a lot of the cool stuff life has to offer. Maybe I should just stop going to it? 🤔🤣 Anyway, now I'm watching through the parts I missed. 🙂 <whispers> Even though I'm still at work. About 3 more hours to go, lol.

I just gave in and ordered a fretless Aklot u-bass from Amazon. I read a lot of good reviews, so I'm hopeful it will arrive in playable condition. I'm completely new to playing the bass, but I have a pretty good ear, so I don't think I'll have a problem with it being fretless. Now I just have to wait for three days until it's delivered! Can't wait to get started! 😁

@DanielECulbertsonАй бұрын
@stephencoxbass The aklot is great! Well built, holds it's tuning, and the strings are much better than I expected (I expected them to feel "sticky" after reading a lot of reviews and comments, but that isn't the case). My only problem is that my job has been working me overtime for months now, and I don't really have quality time to practice playing it. I pretty much go from sleeping to working, then back to sleeping again. Hopefully I'll get more free time to devote to practicing soon, since it's a great instrument and lots of fun to play! 🙂
