I am person who sent this box in - the origin of the drum machine is that my Dad bought it in the 80s(?), and then it sat unused in a drawer for a long while, probably due to its finicky-ness. I honestly assumed it was only good for parts/components, so respect for giving it a new life

back in the day i Loved to use the DR55 .. still have old tunes i made on cassette tape that were made with it .. I saw DR55 and couldnt click fast enough !

I think that this drum machine requires a lot of patients and maybe a lot of modding too. It has potential however to a man like Sam this is a project that will end only in an EPIC way. Work your magic Sam!

I still have a couple of these, in various states of repair, along with a couple of sr-99s, and dr-55s. I used to pick them up for about £10, fix them, and sell them for £50. Now, a broken one costs more than £50!

Oh, wow, in before LMNC raised the prices! 😁 I got an SR88 last year. Needs renovation and cleaning, but it's in decent shape. I thought it was a DR-55 clone, but was happy to notice it sounds different. So the sounds are from that Practical Electronics circuit then? Cool.

There are “power connector” to 9V battery converters. I think they made them for guitar effects pedals that only ran on a battery so you could hook it up to an adapter. Not has hacky, but a lot more reversible.

I have a Movement Sequence Memory Rhythm drum machine I bought back in the 80s which looks like it shares pretty much the same circuit as this one. Unfortunately batteries were left in it and they leaked and damaged the copper track. I'm still trying to get it to work properly but I'm finding it a bit of a challenge.

I had the same Movement version of this machine, as well as a Kay branded one. I think it was a similar thing to some Chinese factories today, where you can order essentially the same device but with your own branding.

When I was in Shenzen in 2015 buying components I came across a keyfob that had more or less the exact same functionality as this drum machine and a headphone out and it was great fun, I left the bloody thing on the plane on the way home, I have tried to find one of these online without success, it was called Mini Drum Computer and was in dark blue plastic and small rubber buttons and had a ring like a key fob ring, I don't know if this was for a lanyard or a key fob but I wish I had bought a lanyard with it as I might still have it today.

You shouldn't be using a 9V battery with this . . . that 9V battery connector is actually for connecting to the included 4xAA plastic battery holder . . . running it on 9V (rather than the 6V of 4XAA) eventually cooks the chips, it's the N°1 way these machines (and the DR55) are killed.

The only hardware drum machine I ever owned, bought brand new around 1981/82. The programmable cymbal trigger pulse output was incredibly useful. I'm certain I could run it off battery only.

When we were kids old mate of mine had one these probably around 1981/82. Or might of been a KAY DRM 1, i think they were all the same design. We were also getting into making modular synths, looking back pretty much what euro rack modules are now, we used 3.5mm jacks as well. All the bits brought from Maplin catalogue's and probably the electronics / music mags as had adverts for diy stuff. No internet of course, everything mail order paying by cheques. I actually found a Boss DR55 being used as a door stop in a shop in Southsea - Portsmouth called Future Music. Gave the guy £5 for it, he said it didn't work. Fixed it up as batteries had leaked and blagged the user manual off them next time as was down that way. He couldn't believe i got it working. This was the age where all the classic 80's synths were on demo / display. Good times really :)

Nickel’s worth of free advice. Put the simpler drum stuff lower. And stuff like the dr55 higher. Kids will have fun just smacking the electronic drums and are more likely to break the knobs off something like the DR55.

hopefully those kinda kids stay at home haha but yeah you are right! guess shall see what happens. to be honest keeping this things that need hitting higher could be better as that promotes them to be more heavy handed which is probs not great as they have knobs on them too. who knows till it happens! had a few kids in their already but alas they have all been pretty respectable they love the owls basicallyhaha

I still have one of these - The DR55 had a much better snare drum circuit. I also have a PE / Clef Master Rhythm somewhere. Useful feature on this is the trigger out, which could drive most synths to do that 80s triggered bassline thing !

Got my SR-88 in 1984, still using it today. The SQ output usually runs into my Juno-6 arpeggiator. The internal battery in mine uses four 1.5 volt double A’s = 6 volts not 9 volts (but no magic blue smoke on yours = good to go?)

Hack for using mains instead of 9V battery - The bit that fastens to a 9V battery will attach, head to toe, to another one of those same fastners instead of a battery So you take a 9V battery fastner from something you don't need and solder it to an imput that a 9V transformer can plug into Then you can plug a 9V transformer, of the same current as a 9V battery, in the place of a battery. so just a couple of wires with a 9V battery connector one end and 9V tranformer inny at other end This works because i used it on a slightly broken guitar pedal. (Also i was thinking you could maybe make a little box the shape of a couple of AAA bateries and wire it up to a transformer to pretend to be batteries, with a ribon cable to it to fit in wee spaces)

I don't even know how people can play live from sheet music. I can read it, but it's not intuitive at all. So if I've never heard the song before I sit for like 15 minutes reading and playing it in my head first, and then just play it by ear
