Today we are meeting Dakota and Aurora- The Wisconsinites! They live full-time on the road in a 1989 Dodge Extra-Van. They built an INCREDIBLE DIY minimalist build! It was a Class B...but they gutted the van completely and remodeled it to meet their needs with TONS of COUNTER Space!

Thank you so much! We shower at planet fitness primarily. When there's none in the area we have a solar shower that mounts to our roof rack outside. We do have a garage with storage under the bed. We have it divided into 4 separate sections: water, electrical, miscellaneous travel items, & underfloor storage for our tools.😊

Now that’s the way to do the van , love it Yes the counter space , toilet hiding and extension of the bed . I think that has me convinced . Plus just a van for two people is all I can handle in driving and living , parking too Wow

@Wisconsinites
@Wisconsinites 2 жыл бұрын
@@NCGirl-tg1dg We have 1 planet fitness membership that is $20/month. We can bring a guest in to any location any day of the month. When there's no planet fitness in the area we have showered at laundromats, rec centers, campgrounds, truck stops, etc. For when we're out in wilderness we have a solar shower we use. We know this isn't perfect for everyone but it's perfect for us & our travel style.😊
@Wisconsinites

Aww thank you so much! We thought a lot about our layout & what would meet our needs best. Having a comfortable bed we can spread out in was important. As well as having a lot of counter space for cooking, folding laundry, etc. We also love that the toilet has a cubby as we don't use it 24/7 so it's there when needed but doesn't take up too much room. A van can be ideal for 2 people & being able to fit in a regular parking space is a huge perk!😊

Amazing, just a great build. Everything looks straight forward and clean and minimalistic, always good if your space is so limited. Better don't even try to clutter it up with decorations - if you didn't really need that approach for your comfort in all these months til now there is also no benefit of it in future, it would only destroy the spacious feeling your van gives you now. The principle of repacking stuff to keep everything organized and optimizing the space is superb, I practice it already partially myself with some smaller items but guess I have to try it anyhow on this much higher level, too. Thanks for sharing!

We completely understand your concern, as it was one of our primary concerns initially! Fortunately our van has a 5.2L LA with EFI, meaning it operates similar to newer vehicles rather than the classic carbureted motors. With that said, we average around 14-16 MPG which we are happy with given that it is a 1989 with a V8 and weighs nearly 3.5 tons.

@@Wisconsinites I'm not on the road so much quite yet, but my 2016 Grand Caravan only gets 14-16 city mpg, so it's a pleasant surprise that you're getting pretty GREAT mileage for such a large older vehicle! You both did a wonderful job on your build with all of its organizational values. With vehicles of such an older age, just how much work did you have to do to the engine and/or transmission, has it given you any real problems? I know vehicles of that age there will always be something to fix. You folks stay safe and "Happy Trails".
@Wisconsinites
@Wisconsinites 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and question! The vehicle had 106K miles when we bought it, and its has 128K miles as of today. Before getting on the road we replaced the entire front suspension and a few bolt on components (i.e. alternator, A/C). During the 22K miles over the last year we have replaced the power steering pump, belts, flat tires, windshield wiper motor, exhaust and a few other components. Fortunately to date we haven't had any major engine/transmission repairs, but are planning to rebuild both the motor and transmission this summer to allow for years of enjoyment. We did however perform a number of tests/inspections to the motor/transmissions prior to getting on the road. Also - I should mention Dakota completes all the work on the vehicle, which helps keeps cost down. Thanks for the well wishes!

If you need a bit of personal space, it's a good idea to pack a pop up tent & single mattress then run some power to the tent. It's a good chill out area away from the main vehicle so you can both have some 'alone time'. It works very well for me & the tent/mattress doesn't take much space up in your van at all. I brought a brand new tent for $14 Australia dollars & a good clean foam mattress off FB for $10. It was well worth it :-)

If you plan on getting lithium batteries I have to recommend the company 'Big Battery ' as opposed to battle born. They sell 170 amp for 995 which is almost double what you get with a battle born battery. They have a 10 year warranty and they are great batteries. If we're having any issues we can call the company and they're incredibly helpful in trying to figure out whats wrong and give us guidance on how to fix it. Awesome build!

Both had 106K on them when we got the van, had we have since put an additional 22K miles on them in the last 12 months. Motor still runs great with no loss of fluids and transmission shifts smoothly. However, this summer we are planning to do some compression tests and considering doing a rebuild/modification to ensure years of continued enjoyment.

If you're worried about the yellow seat, you should be able to use plastic paint or Krylon Fusion. I painted my grill with it a couple years ago, still in great condition.

Great questions! We use an AT&T hotspot as well as a Verizon hotspot for our internet device. For work we do bookkeeping remotely. 🙂

Do you happen to have a video on how you did the cabinets? Both upper and lower?
@Wisconsinites
@Wisconsinites 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we didn’t record much while building. We did stick build cabinets with 2x3 as the frame & 1/2” ply. The uppers we made with 1/2” ply & used pocket holes to secure them together. I hope that helps a little bit!
