I can see that deep down the op is really missing his mother. As he subconsciously seeking a woman who have the same traits as his mother to be his wife. And I guess that's why he continued to help his ex as she's a reminder of his mother and by helping her the op can felt like he's helping his mother in his mind. Not that both his mother and his ex deserve the saving. They're grown adults, who have to take responsibility for their own decisions.

OP'S wife is a greedy, disrespectful and HURTFUL woman.
