check out my new cartoid latch. this mechanism locks the ring and pinky finger in either the extended, retracted, or in the open, unlocked configuration. this mechanism sets up the grip patterns. lmk what you think, thanks for watching!

Looks like a great feature. I use such a 'tripod grip' quite often, although I think almost always with ring and pinky extended. Only possible issue I can think of, is that you might inadvertently engage the mechanism when brushing over a table, as generally the hand has a lot of contact on the edge when sitting at a table.

Make the switches and levers operable by moving the hand over a small hook feature attached to a regular trousers belt. That way, you can switch the modes of the prosthetic by a gesture similar to wiping your hand clean of dirt on your pants and your other hand would be free.

Preset grip settings for the handles on the mill & lathe? Fore finger curl for flicking on switches? There are so many different options to explore, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.

I came across an account with a woman with full hand amp on both sides and her prosthetic was a shoulder sling with claws, where pushing the arm out opened the claw. I was wondering if it would make any sense to adapt what you have so far, in the future, to a prosthesis like that. No idea how a thumb would be implemented, but pushing the arm to open the hand seems like it could potentially be more functional than claws

That is really impressive, can you make it from titanium so that whole mechanism is sort of smaller as hand bones and you could potentially put some fake skin upon it. And even possibly put some tactile sensors in finger tips attached to your skin on the hand as feedback response, it could be useful i guess.
@missingpartsclub
@missingpartsclub 7 ай бұрын
Titanium, while cool, wouldn't get you there. The minimum wall thickness for sls printing is 1.5mm (.060") the parts are already sized to that restriction. So you couldn't lose any finger width. Also, the increased cost to have the fingers in titanium over aluminum is significant. $1800 for parts to build 1 set of fingers in titanium, vs $700 for enough parts to build 2 sets of fingers in AlMgSi. Also, post processing, drill, tap, ream, and fitting the fingers would be much more difficult in titanium. Work hardening and heat effected zone on the pin holes and more so the tapped holes would prove problematic at best. The metacarple bases have holes that are threaded 4-40 and 2-56.

I wonder, does the carthoid lock allow for a variable locking position? So that you could lock the pinky and ring finger to conform to the grip of something while still allowing for free movement of the forefinger and middle finger? If so, I feel this opens up an even wider range of specialized applications possible for this particular prosthesis, which is already a very impressive feat of mechanical engineering on it's own! Excellent work as always, your videos are a true inspiration.
@missingpartsclub
@missingpartsclub 7 ай бұрын
no this setup is either open or closed. i'm using this feature as a base for other grip patterns. the fingers are set up on wiffle trees. that allows for free motion of each finger. so say you want the "glass grip" you build that from all fingers unlocked and close the fingers with the bottom of the glass at the ring finger. the pinky will automatically completely close and the rest will conform to the glass.
@Arkantrol
@Arkantrol 7 ай бұрын
@@missingpartsclub ah, I see, so all but the pinky finger will be able to conform to objects and the carthoid lock allows them to lock into place confirming to whatever object they're gripping around, while the pinky finger is locked into the fully closed position (which I assume can aid in holding the bottom of a glass or other object to keep it from falling through) If my comprehension is correct, that's actually really clever engineering, and answers the question I had about how well it could conform and lock onto objects without needing to overcomplicate things with a bulkier design for variably adjustable locking mechanisms. Forgive me if I sound ignorant of engineering, alot of this is definitely well past my knowledge, however as someone who's always had an interest and fascination with how things are engineered, it is very cool to see how you've created such versatile and intuitive designs while using purely mechanical constructs, rather than relying on electronics that can be finicky or require recharging to operate. Keep up the great work as always, your work is amazing.

@missingpartsclub
@missingpartsclub 7 ай бұрын
Oh it was never planned to be actuated by the off hand, I just haven't figured everything out yet, but wanted to show the feature. It has always been planned to be driven by the motion opposite of splay. Splay is lateral motion from zero, positive. Cart latch would be lateral motion from zero, negative. I'll show it in detail in an upcoming video once I get it dialed in.

are you planning on adding something to be able to lock every finger individually?
@missingpartsclub
@missingpartsclub 7 ай бұрын
No, if I'm actually going to market the device as a kit, it needs to be simple and reliable. When I had full-fledged grip pattern selection with the 158/159 designs, the part count was way too high, along with being just too complex. The selector would also significantly increase the cost of the kit. The rp lock will set the hand up for most of the standard grips without adding a pile of cost or complexity.
