My grandpa, Ray Hanson, was the national champ in 1937. He picked 62 ears a minute for 80 straight minutes in the pouring rain. There were 30,000 cars in the parking lot for spectators. I remember seeing the little trophy at his house every summer. Amazing.

My grandfather used to compete too. He was never a top finisher but one year he was awarded a trophy for best sportsman. I think he treasured that more than he would have winning the competition.

I am 82 and did pick corn by hand. (long ago) We used a "shucking Peg" I was taught by my Grandfather who could pick two rows to my one and beat me to the other end of the field. He said there should be one ear in your hand. one in the air, and one hitting the "bang board" or you should go home and clean the chicken house. Miss that old man.
