Senator Candidate.
"Hey PSU students, I'm Will Scholz, currently a freshman here studying community development. I'd like to represent you as a student Senator in the upcoming 2024/25 school year, to help your voice be heard. The campus's strong diversity, which is sadly uncharacteristic of Portland, creates an environment with huge quantities of different ideas, opinions, resources, and desires, and yet we all have more in common than not. I'd like to focus on issues that the student body as a whole is passionate about, for example sustainability. I'd like to challenge the school to engage in better and more sustainable waste management and energy practices, like investing in cleaner heating systems and electricity, as well as making it easier for students to participate in composting and recycling. Currently there are a total of 0 compost and recycling bins accessible to students in Victor's dining hall, which I'd like to change. Part of my process for creating change is being active in the community, so I currently participate in the student sustainability center, but I also go to events hosted by various clubs and school groups at least once a week. Next year I will be even more accessible to the community, as I will also be a Resident Assistant, and as such I expect to gain valuable insights into the needs and wishes of the student body. One issue that has been on the forefront of my mind since starting here at PSU has been Narcan availability for students who want to protect their community, and currently there are only walk-ins allowed for about two hours a week at SHAC, with the requirement of an appointment scaring off some students who otherwise have the potential to save lives. In the past, I’ve worked with several advocacy groups and community organizations, such as the DOPE project, which helps teach people about overdose prevention, as well as local urbanism groups like Strong Towns, who help advocate for safer streets, as well as better housing and transit. I also participate in bottom-up local governance projects in my hometown, and here in Portland, in the Downtown Neighborhood Association. Needless to say, this has given me experience navigating the labyrinthian bureaucracy of local government and provided me with resources that I can contribute to the school. Even if you choose not to vote for me, I implore you to vote both in this school election, and if you’re eligible, the upcoming general election, to make sure your voice is heard."
After the debates, polls will open and you will receive a personalized ballot link in your PSU email to vote for the candidates of your choosing. If you're having trouble finding it just search "2024 elections ballot" in your email inbox. If you don't see your ballot or have any questions related to ASPSU elections be sure to email election@pdx.edu.
Polls open: May 3rd at 8 pm
Polls close: May 15th at 5 pm
Results will be announced at an elections result event held in Simon Benson House on May 17th (exact time TBA) so please stay tuned to the ASPSU Connect page for details here.
