michael sullivan imo its the best way to convey the admittedly bleak overarch. (i.e. “this was a pointless exercise in national chauvinism, hungary will continue to be picked apart and balkanized by the cia with no real consequences except the death of hungarian democracy.” the problem with a lot of directors’ take on this show (americans and brits especially) is they try to petilly re-enact the cold war in a way that they magically win. that’s not what the show’s about, even if you disagree with my interpretation.

I have been a fan of this musical since the concept album came out and think think this version is a great culmination of a number of developments over the years, it acknowledges the time/place it was originally set during that uncomfortable era around the Cold War but ultimately it’s a story of unrequited love. I was most impressed by Josh Groban’s performance.

Still some of the best music of any West End musical ever - and for all that the story's setting is "of its time", its core elements still resonate. Marvellous.
@jammin0237 жыл бұрын
I suppose it must have been late '80s as according to Wikipedia it only ran in the West End from May '86 to Apr '89. Less than 3 years! I was lucky to catch it. I remember being impressed by the way they used a light-up floor of 64 squares both as a giant chess board and, by raising one side of it and lighting all the squares, as a snowy mountainside.

It's an interesting story, actually. The first night they did kiss, but the second they didn't. The reason is because the queen attended the second performance, the filmed one. Apparently you are not allowed to kiss in front of the queen. In fact, before they watch movies they have someone preview them so they can be warned to cover their eyes for sex scenes. Evidently you can say any number of curse words in front of her, however. :P

They actually filmed both nights. From a production perspective, you would never film only one night for something that's going to be televised. Also, throughout the show you can see a few cuts that are not totally seamless. It looks like they took cuts from both nights to make this DVD.

@TimeandMonotony4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much every production since the concept album cuts out The Argument and I have no idea why. It's instrumental in showing how Florence and Anatoly's relationship is beginning to strain under pressure, and removing it makes his decision to put chess (and himself) before any of his relationships come out of left field.
