I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

That knob joke... i laughed way too hard at this. I was once in a band called "the knobs" becausewe were a bunch of "goobers." "The knobs" was funny because nobody was allowed to play with us. Our lead singer was on crystal meth most of the time so we changed our name to "tweak n the knobs" The last show we ever played was all covers at a nursing home and somewhere inbetween our 7th or 8th song an old lady died. A week later our singer goes to jail, then prison for... you guessed it... meth, and the band broke up. I tell ya...we were gonna go places

DomSchu sounds nothing like an ass if you get it dialed in properly, i've got a katana 100 combo i know from experience. With lower output pickups the crunch channel can give you that 70s style plexi sound or if you drive the front of the amp with an OD and crank the gain a bit makes for a really nice and dark rhythm sound.
@DomSchu
@DomSchu 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I thought the problem was too. I know from my Yamaha THR10 that the crunch model is the hardest to dial in, but when you do it does sound quite good and is very dynamic. Definitely nowhere near a tube amps crunch for the record.
@chadsavan
@chadsavan 6 жыл бұрын
I tested the Katana too and im pretty impressed with its tone. Most important thing to note is "The less you need to spin the knobs to let the amp sound good, the better the amp actually is!". Would recommend to every beginner guitarist.

I heard the head at a Boss demo event at GC in my area and absolutely loved it. I went to see if it was ok enough for my guitar student and ended up buying it myself. It's my main live head and my Mesa Rect-o-verb stays at home for recording, coming out only for bigger gigs. This simplifies my live setup enough where I feel like I no longer need to fiddle with a pedal board live.

So many guys in my circles using the 50 watt combo. Its just the best for cover gigs and bar shows. I feel comfortable playing along to it as a drummer. We also play a lot of post rock usinv the same combo. As well as that , we are using the line out to demo a post rock ep (along with matt halpern drums). Perfect demo set up! That combo is not very suited for heavier music though. In a pinch with pa support and a good player it manages, but the head or the 2x12 would seem like far superior options.

I recently bought a cr120h and it sounded good it's a nice amp but it was missing one key thing for me it did not work with the volume knob well all though it is very capable of getting awesome tones and the price you can't beat, but because I wasn't happy with the volume thing I returned it and got a katana it's really good and does above average with the volume knob it sounds rad and with the options that are not overwhelming you can't go wrong seriously. Both are rad though the orange is good solid state action one of the better solidstates you'll find there's a guy on you tube that does some videos on it that really do it justice dave Simpson is his name. I can't speak on the Yamaha I know nothing about it.

I gotta say I love mine. Got the 100 combo and have no problems with the speaker/cabinet. Plenty of headroom. I also got the footswitch and two expression pedals - one for wah and one for volume. The fact that the footswitch has connections for two expression pedals is a huge plus, and I love the ease of use it provides. While I still prefer just plugging my pedalboard into my Marshall DSL40C, the Katana 100 combo is a great, versatile amp - especially for the price. Far better than the other modeling amps I've tried, since it not only sounds a lot better but also takes away the "option paralysis" the others bring to the table with their complicated control schemes. And yes, that includes the Roland Cubes.

I have also used it in small clubs live, running a direct out to the PA. It has a little tic sound with the reverb/ delay that get annoying but bang for the buck and ease of use, it’s awesome. id like to say that i have the 2/12 version of this and it is incredible. Even on 50 watts at half master, it has easily enough volume to be heard over a kit with a drummer really going for it. I was disappointed with the direct sound out of the amp through the usb but then they added the other impulses that I'm yet to try out because i didn't know there was an update until i saw this video. Thanks a heap glenn!!! ill reply to this with an edit saying what they sound like. The amp sounds great and I've gigged multiple times and its been brilliant. Someone in the comments here said that the crunch sounds like ass but I've got this really nice crunch sound so idk how he dialled his tone. I used my Mesa Oversized 4x12 until I discovered a Park 4x12 with the Greenback 25w Made in England speakers. I fell in love. They’re so versatile for any type of music; crank the master volume up and you get some seriously monstrous tones that blends speaker breakup and the amps distortion. The clean tones are also extremely warm as well. It’s worth a try, A/B them and check em out! Cheers from San Diego!

No it is NOT digital, COSM or otherwise. The preamp is all solid state ANALOGUE. The effects are digital and the control circuitry is digital. The preamp tones are based on technolgy that was designed for the Blues Cube and refined in the Waza amp.

Preamp (and cabinet "modeling" tones, like Crunch, Lead, Clean, and Brown) is solid-state analog. The effects section (three effects at a time) is digital. VOX does the same thing with their AV-series like the AV30, except they don't have nearly the amount of effects available and instead use small tubes in their power section to "color" the power amp. This is basically the manufacturers' response to all of those players bitching about how digital amps are killing tone.

Ibanez Guy - People tend to not do their homework. It's human nature to just spout off something you think you know in order to get others to listen to you - especially with social media. That said, it's pretty funny to watch people get handed their hats the moment they start flapping their gums.

me and the other guitarist in my band have been using these amps for live shows for over a year now and the thing holds up. i do want to upgrade at some point but for now its simple and easy to use and also delivers pretty decent tone... couldnt recommend enough to be honest. plus as glen said great for bedroom practice as well :)

I have the katana artist. And I will say that with katana library or the boss tone studio and alittle tweaking, This amp is unbeatable. Get the foot switch and a decent dual expression pedal with a switch the tones are endless.

This could be a nice option for students who can't have a real cab in their dorm but gig and/or have a real cab at home, good impulses at school, option of real cabs for gigging, an amp that you can really grow with as a guitarist, also built in speaker would be good if you want a dirt simple practice amp if you travel alot

I have a challenge for you Glenn. Can you get a good mix out of a digital 8 track recorder (boss br 80). You can use what ever mics, guitars and drums you want but you have to use the plug ins onboard. I have a be 80 and it works well for what I wanna do. I want to see what could be done with it in the hands of a professional.

Are you kidding me the boss katana? When it comes to bedroom use there's only one amp I would ever consider and that's a dimed out Marshall Plexi lol. I actually ended up going with the Marshall dsl40c in all seriousness. The katana sounds great

Sweetwater is running the DSL40C with a Celestion Creamback for Black Friday sale right now at $649. This, just after I paid $699 for the same setup. That said, the DSL40C doesn't sound like a DLS40C at bedroom levels. At .5 watt, it sounds like ass. At 20 Watt, it's still too loud to push into natural breakup in the bedroom. As such, I end up just running my pedalboard through it, which makes it sound amazing. Even so, the Katana 100 costs HALF as much and is far more capable of maintaining all of its tone at bedroom levels. That, my friends, is a win.

John Crafton Yeah couple weeks ago Guitar Center was having a sale on the limited Edition vintage DLC40c for the same price 649 that's why I ended up picking it up. But that happens to me all the time I'll buy something then three days later it's on sale lol.

William Winn - I did an A/B comparison between the Creamback and the Seventy-80 that comes with it, and I have to say that the Seventy-80 sounded better in person than I expected, considering what everyone seems to be saying about it. Even so, I still liked the Creamback better. But at $649, even if it's being replaced with a new model, it's a great buy for a great amp.

Hey Glen, I was wondering if you have ever used a Peavey Bandit for recording? I have an older model from the early nineties and it has a really nice sound for thrashy/heavy stuff.

I bought a Katana 2*12 100w. Love it. What the Katana is… it’s a flexible, powerful budget option for non professional players. If you don’t have the cash for a nice valve amp and a pedal train the size of a anaconda, this is a great flexible option… particularly if you like playing with your tones. Don’t expect it to be 100% for any application, but expect it to be 90% for almost everything.

Katana kicks ass! I own the combo 112 and gig with it all the time. I can't say enough about these amps. I think the dedicated clean channel makes a huge difference..and it takes pedals well too..not that you would really need them..but it does. Thanks for finally getting to the Boss Katana..They just put out a speaker cab for the head..I think it's a 212, check em out!

I have to agree with you re: the speaker really killing most lower end and modelling amps. So many just sound like ass, to the point of it being a major distraction to me. (I'm trying to learn, but also a jr tone snob, lol) Just because I currently suck, doesn't mean I have to sound shitty as well. We have rather opposite tastes in sound though. I like a warm bluesy crunch, and a punchy balls-out lead tone ( watch pretty much any video with Warren Haynes in it, and you'll hear what I mean- or any Johan Segeborn video, lol). So far, The Katana demos have been lacking in those areas. Lots of things to like about it, though. To be fair, I'm a fanboy of vintage Fender and Marshall sounds, rather than of high gain stuff. (If your windows and walls are still intact- you haven't turned the amp up loud enough!)

I have a Boss Katana Mini for fun, and it's terrific. I also have several other amps, one of my favourites is the Marshall DSL 40C with a Vintage 30 16 ohm speaker, cleans are fabulous and high gain rocks...works great with pedals too! I have yet to look at the Katana 100 x 2.
