Checking out the updated Pilot Experience Sim Maule M7 in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Today we're taking a look at the updated Maule M7 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking it for a flight around Kern Valley in the United States. It's a great aircraft, modelled wonderfully, and with a very realistic flight model.
The only downer - as I discuss in the video - is if you buy it from a vendor outside of the Microsoft Flight Simulator marketplace, it uses some form of DRM - requiring the installer to be run as "administrator". I'm not happy about that at all - but given the rampant piracy that seems to surround add-ons for Flight Simulator, I can understand why they developers have had to resort to it.

Hi all - I've had word from PilotExperienceSim - the developers of the Maule M7 in Microsoft Flight Simulator - about the installer running a script. Here's their explanation: --- Our installer is simple, the execute function at the end is not a dangerous a "FS Labs" style spyware :) The need of execute as an admin is due to the need to access to register for the online updates , like this PESIM Central know this product is installed in version 1.1.0 (example) It is only activates the product in the register so then , PESIM Central can do the online updates. It can also (and will for MSFS soon install third party settings like GSX profiles. The last thing our installer does is track the install or activations number to no be pirated to much. Like this we can see if a licence was activated to much on many computers and suspend the updates, no more. --- I have a lot of sympathy for them - for all developers for Microsoft Flight Simulator really. The piracy that goes on with third party aircraft is absolutely horrendous. It's a shame the base simulator has never implemented some kind of public key licensing system - where developers can register licenses via an API, that the simulator can check. It would solve the problem immediately.

I am glad they updated the M-7. I owned an M-4 for years, loved it. It accelerated very fast, had STOL performance, great fuel economy with the Franklin 220. In the M-7 they increased the rudder area for cross winds, but reduced ailerons, the Lycoming was heavier and thirsty.

100% with you on the screws. So many developers put beatiful textures on the outside, or model every detail in the gear well, but will leave a dodgy texture inside. Guess which one you're looking at most of the time. Great video. I'd like a Maule in the sim but admin privilege and a mystery script? No thanks.

Hmmm... not to be nit picky but we had an actual M7 for about ten years. No way would the engine quit if you pulled the throttle all the way back. That in itself would render the craft unairworthy. In fact idle is a normal preflight check, if it wouldn't idle at full closed throttle you'd taxi back to the hangar. As for this model, it's not bad but the wing struts look to be a bit skinny. In real life they are pretty thick and short - that's why they have no jury struts. Oh and many of them do have autopilots, we had an S-TEC 30 with an HSI. It was a good plane but definitely quirky in ways.

Please note that we have added a custom engine code and spark plug logical and this is a massive work but it can be adjusted for sure thanks to your feedbacks ;)

Our Maule is validated by real Maule pilots / instructor. This effect is a known one when cold injection engine floods the spark plugs . When at correct temperature you can set it to idle . Do not hesitate to send us your feedback so we can submit it to our real pilots testers and ajust the engine realistic feature logical 😊

@@pilotexperiencesim2913 Thank you for the responses. You say here "when at correct temperature you can set it to idle", but that hasn't been what happens in my experience with your plane though. I can fly for 30 miles at temperature, then land, and the engine will cut off in idle even when it's still at temperature. If it's a matter of flooding, would you suggest that leaning the mixture while on the ground should prevent the engine turning off while at idle?

@@pilotexperiencesim2913 Thank you for taking the time to reply! For something designed to pay for itself via marketplace commissions, MS is sure missing the boat. For all the sophistication in technical design in FS, the huge delays in getting new aircraft up is simply illogical. Marketplace is missing a lot of income to other sellers for these delays. I've been trying to support FS dev via Marketplace, but running out of patience.

Having owned a Maule since 2002 I know a bit about them. Spins are prohibited since it was not part of the certification process. It’s placarded on the panel. It’s a very stable aircraft even at low airspeeds.

Also you used atypical spin recovery technique. Recommended is PARE acronym. Power to idle. Ailerons neutral. Rudder to the floor in direction opposite the spin. When rotation is controlled forward elevator to break the stall then carefully back elevator to control the dive without inducing a secondary stall. I personally favor relaxing back pressure immediately. Loved the video thanks for your work. I'm a commercial pilot and Maule owner for 23 years but new to flight sim. Odd I thought the Maule Can't spin or stall read it a book once a bout a pilot couldnt land propperly and a Good Review I must say and also this aerodrome is quite interesting and watching this will help me prepare for Monday's flight comming up

I've flown the update a couple times now and overall the update is nice and surprisingly extensive, but I don't think the engine should be dying while in idle. No other plane I have does that and the other person in your comments isn't the first person I've heard say that IRL plane engines would fail a run-up check if they died while in the idle notch. I know this is the first plane from this new dev, so maybe they're still learning things. Hopfully this gets fixed in the future and they keep updating this plane. It's in my top 3 bush planes, with the Wilga & Savage Grravel.

I will note that with the real IO-540 you do keep it at 1000 rpm when first started but not because it will quit if you close the throttle. It's an oil flow warm up optimization procedure.

​​​@@pi.actualMakes sense. The devs have discord channel and I've had good interactions there. They might appreciate some advice from someone who has a lot of experience. The plane didn't do this behavior before this new update and it's great otherwise, and getting better.

Thanks In fact we aren’t new , we are here since 2018 on P3D (then MSFS) doing airports but yes it is our first aircraft 😊 We will re verify the spark plugs flood logical on the Maule with our real pilot testers , it is an known injection engine effect and that is why we have added it but we will triple check thanks to your questions

-7 degree flaps! Only production aircraft that has them that I know of. High performance gliders have it. It reduces induced drag. It works.

On my M7 adds about 3 knots in cruise, more effective at lower weight/AOA.

The compass or magnetic compass moves in the opposite direction to reality, I have seen this error on several airplanes in MFS2020.

Actually - no - in most planes (but not all) the magnetic compass (or whisky compass as it's sometimes known) rotates the opposite way than you would expect. There's a good reason for it too - if you draw a diagram from overhead of what you're seeing. Any that "make sense" tend to be gyro driven.

How would you compare the Maule (five seat Lycoming) with the Rans (two seat Rotax), especially in flight model and extras? I was almost ready to purchase this until I watched the last 30 seconds of the video re: a terminal window and Admin rights. Hmm. I would ask the developer what that is all about.

I had terrible problem with it before with it porpoising almost uncontrollably when trying to come in for a landing. I am hoping this update fixed that (or maybe it was just me).
