What do you think about using a switched power supply (as in the new Black star 100W amp) in order to significantly reduce the weight of an amp/combo? You can probably even make the voltage adjustable and more or less stable .... ? Win - win - win?

Utter admiration for your and aynsley approach to signature amp quality.

What does the pot next to the Rectifier valve do on the Dlux combo? If you told us I missed it, keep up sterling work!

I think that a Princeton retrofitted with a Deluxe Reverb power transformer is the original modification that Randall Smith made that led to Mesa Boogie.

As the owner of a 76 JMP 2203, its really interesting watching these little 1-watt JCM800s come along!

Hello! Got a question: I am having a hard time dialing in my solder station. It’s either too little heat or too much heat. What do you usually set your solder station for eyelets, turrets, and chassis grounds?

Is the mains safety earth on the Abbot Deluxe clone looped off a crimp tag on the standby switch and then onto a transformer bolt? That's a bit amateur if so!

You can run a Deluxe non reverb with a 5U4GB, that will reduce voltages.

only if the 5v winding is rated for 3A...not all were.

Yes, but Fender used the same PT for both Rectifier Valves( 125P33A)

@hannowirth7245 not all P33As have a 3A winding...that's my point, the spec changed over the years. I have a customer who found out the hard way!

What are your thoughts on the new mesa boogie, and why would they use a dual rectifier? Really enjoy your work in the black magic of valve amplification.

I regret not grabbing one of the Black Friday specials, I did find a second hand mint factory built Mojotone Studio One for about 300 pounds which has a JCM800 or 5e3 pre going into 1 watt single tube a/b output stage (no inverter tube). It is a load of fun with a greenback. Mojotone also sell a hotrodded 5e3 that I snagged as well.

Hi Chris. Happy New Year. Another great video as always. As you pointed out the deluxe clone has a pretty high 150hz 3rd harmonic of our 50hz mains frequency. I couldn't tell from the video and Apologies if you have tried changing the 6V6's but I noticed the ones in it are TAD and I had a genuine Fender Tweed Deluxe in for service about 12 mths ago which also had the 150hz hum and the output was down. I couldn't find anything abnormal or out of spec components including the transformers and the valves all tested good too, however I decided to swap the TAD output valves for another matched known good pair of mine and that cured it. No more 150hz hum and output to a nice healthy level. Why both valves tested good when clearly they had become faulty I don't understand? I doubt it will the same problem with the one you have but as I said if you haven't swapped the valves might be worth a shot. PS I think I put Sovtecs in it.

I'm actually building an amp with a very similar output stage to the 5e3 and see the same crossover distortion on my scope as you showed in this video. How much crossover dist is normal/acceptable for a 5e3? My 6V6 plate voltage is at about 385VDC ,should I lower it? There is almost no real clean headroom, but always some grittyness even at very low gain. If I move my signal generator to the PI there is still some grit. Any advice?

You probably already know this but on a 5e3 if you plug into the bright channel and gradually turn the volume up on the unused normal channel you should get a bit more clean headroom. There is a sweet spot.

@@marktierney3938 thanks for the tip, but my amp is not a ture 5e3 and only has one input. Also the output stage has crossover distortion at very low levels entering the LTP phase inverter. I might need to consult some forum experts at this point :)
