Love the Carolinas. Cesar Chavez was vegan. I agree there needs to be more diversity as the face of veganism. Especially since I personally know so many Hispanic and Korean, and Chinnese vegans and yet I see very little of them in the Media. My husband is Mexican and also vegan. @Olivetree80
@Olivetree80 4 жыл бұрын
Ehh that's arguable, she's great, but people who directly confront it are doing something amazing and courageous. They are causing people to rethink things and internalize how animal suffering makes them feel. Being an entertaining individual who makes food videos is not going to do that, it may cause intrigue or open mindedness to spark, but not a shift in perspective.
@Untoldanimations
@Untoldanimations 4 жыл бұрын
You cannot *directly* do anything for the vegan movement if animal rights isn't front and centre. At best, it will just spark people's interests in listening to actual animal rights speakers like Gary or Ed. If you come in with the right mindset then it's pretty much impossible not to be vegan after listening to those speeches. So while Tabitha alone probably isn't making anyone vegan, her contributions are likely helping everyday carnists become aware of animal rights. Before I know about veganism, there were a bunch of little things in my life that steered me in the right direction. My friend talked about only buying 'cruelty free' cosmetics and I also know a vegan who always appeared happy and healthy. None of these people ever directly challenged me to consider animal rights, but they inadvertently allowed me to consider it on my own some time later. Ideally it would be nice for Tabitha to drop some hints here and there about animal rights but at the moment there's nothin wrong with talking about plant-based living.

I never liked having an eating disorder or wanted anyone feel/experience everything involved in it. The rituals, impulses and urges involved were something that feels greatly shameful and hidden. Let alone to show it off to the world. I've never met or worked with anyone who would want to do that. I've also never met anyone who had pride in any of it. Earth hero is actually completely sustainable. They offer carbon neutral shipping. And actually look into each product/company. You are totally right about plastic recycling. Which is why in my opinion we need to show businesses that as consumers we don't want to buy products that are not sustainably made. You are also right about the expenses. [12:47] It is also concerning when people buy live animals like that from a grocery store and letting them go as the person doesn't know if the animal will survive, or even if the animal is native to their area. It is possible that those animals could wreck havoc on the local ecosystem.

I love Tabitha! Her voice is like honey and my favorite phrase of hers is "cuz that's your business." I like that she shows a mix of meat/dairy replacements and like regular fruit/veg/legumes and grains and just makes veganism look normal. And you were right on the money; she's from North Carolina :-D Also, I almost fell out of my seat when you said that you hate dill. It's my favorite herb and it goes so well with potatoes - especially with a little vegan butter, salt and pepper. I'm with you on BBQ stuff though - not a fan of it and it's too messy. "I don't care what culture you come from, eating animals is wrong." This is such a colonial approach to veganism. The white people that dominate and often speak for the vegan community need to make room for indigenous people and people of color, because their connection to culture through food practices are frankly more important than a westernized morality judgement. Respect for animals and the natural world is more ingrained in marginalized cultures than it is in the western world, as is evident through unsustainable farming practices and agribusiness as a whole. If veganism wants intersectionality, maybe we should reassess the ways in which we make it unattainable for POC.

I was already thinking of going reducitarian/veggi/ idk whatever when I first discovered UV, and I have suffered from repeated eating disorders so i have to be super careful about my eating habits but she is responsible for my reduces meat lifestyle and even my family's replacing 2 meals a week with vegetarian options (can't get rid of the cheese yet, but a salad with olives and feta is better than a steak in my book) [we are midwesterners so its literally going from meat 4× a day to 3 meals a day with minimal animal products and at least 2-5 meals a week that are vegetarian at a minimum so yeah] [I eat like 1-2 me a lot with meat a week unless its leftovers for the record)

@@ConstantChaos1 That's awesome that you're still working at it despite the challenges! :) It took me a while to go completely vegan (I was a vegetarian for five years first), and I didn't have anything working against me (I live alone and have no health considerations to complicate things). :)

17:25 About those things that were being deepfried: I think that was kroepoek (or krupuk). We eat it here all the time in The Netherlands. It's an Indonesian snack that's kind of like a potato chip, but airyer. Most of the time it's made of shrimp but there's also one that's made with cassava. The one made with cassava is sooo much better imo. I bet most asian supermarkets would have them for if you wanna try!

I think the pro to buying the currently more expensive stuff and having it delivered in a less enviro friendly way is it'll gradually encourage stores to start stocking it. We now have things like compostible bags and bamboo toothbrushes in our major supermarkets because demand for them started.

I looove your videos: A small tip for you: do not use bamboo cutting boards if possible. Bamboo is a grass, not a wood and has a lot of mineral residue so when cutting on it you are dulling your knives a lot faster. Just a little heads up there😊

In the Indian video, the colorful things that puffed when fried are called fryums. They're a popular Indian snack made of veggie starches. You can find them in Indian grocery stores and they're super fun.

I recently got an air fryer and it's amazing. You should do a video on zero/low waste and what actually works. The coconut bowls look so hard to keep clean without them getting funky. You can get good used ceramic dishes for pretty cheap at pretty much any thrift store.

I’ve been using the Dropps detergent pods for a couple of years now. For 3 people, my subscription is $16 every 4 months, so it’s actually very affordable. They have recently developed a dishwasher pod that is $28 for a 4 month supply. The company claims its shipping is carbon neutral. The main draw for me was that I get my order in two small boxes with no plastic and it’s cost effective as well. I call it a win. Nothing is perfect, but I really like this company and their products. I am not affiliated with the company in any way, just a very satisfied customer.

The thing that was being deep fried at about 17:32 is strips of rice paper like used in those raw "summer rolls"! They puff up when dropped in hot oil and make a great alternative to prawn crackers :)
