I really like this song. The repetitive but inconsistent lyrics gives a fun feeling of the singer improvising the song as it goes.

I was introduced to this song because it was used as a break after a story about opec reducing production and crude oil prices increasing on Marketplace. And it was the only good thing about the story. Thank you! 🎉

Alright , might be dense, but can someone just plainly tell me if this is a some kind of post-ironic protest song or something? I am not that bright
@AliceYobby11 ай бұрын
not post-ironic, this is just straight up, classic irony
@AliceYobby11 ай бұрын
specifically the chorus is making you imagine a powerful western politician/oil tycoon is just some guy in their friend group, who theyre complaining about because instead of wanting to be normal or have fun and live life he's obsessed with bombing the middle east. dramatic irony, it re-frames your normal way of thinking about politicians in a comical way but which also illuminates, besides being evil, how *strange* powerful politicians are.

If you want a serious analysis: at face value it's an anti-war song about some warmongering psycho who shoots down the narrator's ideas for the sake of bombing. But metaphorically, I think this song is actually supposed to just be about a dude who keeps suggesting they do the same thing over and over again and annoys his friends doing it. Furthermore, just based on how the lyrics change slightly from second person to first person ("and once a year, I act like I was glad I was born"), I think the song is ultimately about the narrator himself, mocking himself for acting like an irresponsible and petty tyrant who is unable to change his ways.

@@antgrantranti typed out a very long, detailed explanation of what the song is about but i guess youtube deleted it. basically it’s ironic in that it asks you to imagine a war-mongering politician as a normal guy, someone in your friend group, and he’s just so annoying because instead of wanting to do anything fun or interesting, all he wants to do is b*mb the m*ddle east (censoring bc idk what word or phrase the youtube robot deleted my comment for). it paints this picture in service of highlighting how not-normal, and crazy politicians really are- because we usually think of the people who make these decisions that k*ll so many people as detached from the life we actually experience, we don’t fully appreciate that evilness and insanity - putting that kind of person into a situation that’s more relatable to us as people, like a friend group, helps you to appreciate it. this is the same reason why we see serial k*llers as uniquely evil, but see generals and the politicians who choose to go to w*r, who k*ll hundreds of times more people than any serial k*ller could dream of k*lling, as not only normal, but also sometimes noble. Put a behavior that seems far away and foreign into your day to day life and it becomes suddenly real.
