This is insanity. He should have a ramp at every available entrance. Everyone NEEDS “a second means of egress.” Aside from the power issue, what if there’s a fire on that side of the house?!? If I built a house with only one way in and out, the city would tell me it isn’t up to code. Yet for someone with a disability, only one entrance and exit is fine?

@@meyou-mk3qz im not against asking for help from the state, this guy already got it, he was given an option between a lift and a ramp, state of the art stuff, he chose the lift, if he wants a ramp he can have a ramp but on his own dime, and hes not asking the government for the money, hes asking the government to force other people to pay for it, and they did, so now leave it to people who actually want to pay for it, and if not enough people do then he can pay for it, there are plenty of scholarships out there for people in his situation, he could get a degree and go get a job, most jobs would hire him, in fact a lot of companies prefer to hire people i wheelchairs and minorities for the brownie points to the public, its not too hard to become an accountant and they make good money, how about an architect, programing, customer service even, being disabled isnt a free pass, sorry, life is hard, he got some very expensive stuff for free and will receive help for the rest of his life, be a bit kore grateful we have that stuff in place, you're the one being a karen trying to bully people into giving up more of their money, theres no infinite supply of money out there and you having a disability doesn't give you the right to the money i work hard for, my back is forever messed up, week after i turned 18 i got hit by a car, just working as a sales associate was extremely hard on me, driving for a living now still hurts, i work hard and its painful, a desk job also has its issues for my back, no matter what i do it will be painful, i as a taxpayer already paid for his lift, tell me why he's entitled to more of my money? UPDATE: This guy made a GoFundMe in 2016 (the year this came out) not for a ramp but to help pay for some medical issues. It got 13.3k out of 15k. Then he made another near identical one in 2018 with the entry copied and pasted but more added to it and only got like twelve hundred bucks out of 12 thousand he was asking. Interesting. I find the first sentence to his GoFundMe a little hilarious. Here's the text for the longer portion (tl;dr he has everything wrong with him and needs a million surgeries and bandaids and insurance won't pay) _I’m Nick Heilig. For those of you who know me, you are aware of how independent I am, and therefore hesitant to ask for help, monetary or otherwise. For those of you who don’t know me, here’s a little bit about what I’ve gone through over the last two and a half years. I was born with Spina Bifida in 1980 and incurred 16 surgeries before 1996. There was practically a celebration in 2006 when I was 10 years without an operation; and 2011 we were ecstatic about 15 years without going under the knife! On September 21st, 2013, I was diagnosed with a sepsis from an infection of a pressure ulcer. Sepsis is a condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs. Since 2013, I’ve undergone 12 weeks of hyperbaric treatment (which consisted of 2 hours a day in a chamber for 5 days a week), trying different dressings for the wound, and 9 surgeries. My nearly 18 year streak has ended. over 6 years later I am still dealing with the pressure ulcer and have tried many conventional treatments and there are some things that I have not tried that may or may not be covered by insurance. Even with insurance there are many things that I have had to purchase on my own due to the limits of what can be sent by insurance on a monthly basis or if it is even covered. I have also been diagnosed with mitochondrial disease. Since being diagnosed, I am on 10 different supplements daily to fight it and they are not covered by insurance. I’m telling this story because there is still so much hope for my condition. I try and stay very positive and I have been extremely grateful for all of the assistance I have received. I often have to pay for wound care products not covered by insurance or not being sent enough for a 30 day month because of the limits insurance sets. This leaves me having to purchase the supplies I need for most of the month. I had surgery in November 2017 to do a surgical flap to repair my pressure ulcer. Unfortunately, it opened up again and I had to have another surgery to close it. That surgery, also failed in December 2017. I was in the Hospital for a couple of months and then was transferred to a rehab facility. I was sent home in Februrary 2018 and am still dealing with my pressure ulcer. It's been a very difficult road. I have also had some bumps in the road dealing with infections, shingles among other things. The Medical bills continue to mount as well as paying out of pocket for extra wound care supplies monthly. Since 2018 I have had shingles near my pressure ulcer that was very painful. I also have switched doctors again and have had another surgery and have a major infection which I have been on a course of 10 weeks of antibiotics and another 18 weeks of hyperbaric chamber treatments. I am forever grateful for all the help I have gotten over the years dealing with this pressure sore. The cost of wound healing, supplies, vitamins, and Dr visits is never ending. Any help you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated._

This is a Medicare or Medicaid issue. Both will pay for what a handicap person need to get around his house but nothing more. Thus if you can get around with a walker, you can not get a wheelchair, even if a wheelchair would permit him to get around more. He has an elevator so as far as the state is concerned he does not need a ramp. Please note, while the state is authorizing such up grades, but it is all Federally funded and subject Federal rules, which includes the restriction on only one means of movement for a handicap person, no matter how cheap and convenient another alternative would be.

But he should have asked for a ramp to begin with and the extremely expensive lift after, and he wants the super expensive ramp when there are plenty for cheap, in a lot of cases it does hurt an individual but this is really on himself tbh, his mistake and he can mostly remedy it by getting a longer string for the garage pull, maybe keeping some extra coats in the garage and a battery ups with a space heater hooked up to it, if they are worried about the generator they could leave it hooke up outside and put a cover over it

@@sueregan2782 - Even if he was, he was given a ramp in his garage. They aren't going to give everyone everything they ask for or there would be no end. They don't play "what if" games. It would be a good guess to say they probably offered the automatic ramp in his garage or a manual ramp to his front door and he opted for the automatic ramp and then decided he wanted both "just in case" or a generator. While I feel empathy for the guy's condition, I don't think he should be complaining to the media that the state won't pay. If he wants a manual ramp, he can pay for it. I'm sure they let him know of the pros and cons of the automatic ramp before installing it. Also, as far as the garage door pull switch, that is a simple fix, make the rope 1-2 foot longer by either replacing it with a longer one or tying another rope to the existing one. For the manual crank, he lives with his mother, she is there to help him. If he were alone with no one to help, we are talking about a different situation. I do not think the state should have to fork out thousands of dollars as the lady says to give him a second exit ramp. That being said, perhaps a more empathetic result would be for someone from that office to come out and extend the garage door switch so he can pull it if he needs to and to either move the switch so he can use it manually or if that is not possible suggest they get a life alert subscription where he can press and have support. If I were in his position, I would make the request while knowing I will likely have to pay for it out of my own funds or pay some percentage.

Also he wants them to pay for a full house generator, i thought they denied him owning one, its ridiculous to expect them to pay for all of that, and before people cry about him being on disability or something realize that he had the state pay for that extraordinarily expensive lift instead of a normal wheelchair ramp which woild work under all conditions, as for him getting stuck in there, get a decent sized battery power thing and a space heater and put a couple jackets in the garage, he will be fine, if the opener is too short for him, its string, put a longer one up, its really this simple, theres a line between requesting help and being a leach and this guy crossed it, and before anyone makes any "you would feel differently if you were in his position" comments id like to say i most certainly would not, in fact id likely pay to have a cheap ramp pjt in both entrances rather than burden tax payers with something so mundane, i would also likely go get a job, because lets be real here, there are plenty of jobs he can get, such as getting his a+ and networking+ certifications and getting a decent job in tech support, it doesnt pay great but it does pay better than disability, however whenyou see free money sadly most people will just say "i have it hard enough, let other people pay for my necessities"

Most states have programs for the physically disabled to provide assistance for things like wheelchair ramps. These programs can often pay the construction in part or in total. But the state seems unwilling to help here. The motorized lift is cool and all, but should it lose power, or breaks down, the guy is essentially stuck without any other way to enter and exit the home. This is like someone wanting to build a 12 story hotel but only with an elevator and no stairs, or vice versa. No city building code would allow such a thing. There needs to be more than one way to leave or enter the building. He should have more than one way to leave and enter his home. The state should pay for a ramp, or at least pay for part of it.

They didnt deny him the ability to install a ramp or put in a full home generator they denied paying for it, he could easily pay to have a cheap ramp built and put a longer string on the garage pull but instead he wants the state to pay for a several thousand dollar ramp and a full home generator

@Christina Green there are plenty of jobs for people that cant walk, it keeps you out of jobs that require high reach or heavy lifting sure, some jobs like being a cashier as well, but aside from that most jobs will hire him, plenty of people get arround on public transportation, and there are tons of online jobs, sure it makes it harder, maybe if he lost his job a while back and has had a hard time finding a new one i could understand that, but they dont say anything about that and usually they would if that was the case so i doubt hes ever had a job, that go fund me campaign raised him over 500k, he bought a house in Buffalo with that money, still gets disability and all his medical bills paid for, and has apparently started another fundraiser for his medical needs, disabled doesn't mean helpless

This is why the state should never have too much power... IF they have enough power to tell a citizen that they can't build a ramp on their own front door they have too much power.

He is was disability and basically a ward of the state. They funded the first ramp as required by law. They are not obligated to fund a second ramp. Regardless, $500,000+ was raised for him to help him out so he sold that house and moved to Buffalo. Interestingly, he also has a gofund me page to raise money for his health condition.

Im assuming you misunderstood like most people, the news was trying to make it sound worse than it was, he wanted the state to pay to install a full home generator and another ramp after they had already paid for a portable generator and that huge lift, you also get an option for which method you want for accessing the home, he chose the more expensive lift, but now wants them to pay for the top of the line expensive ramp as well, and he wants them to pay for a full home backup generator, they never denied him the ability to pay to have it built,
