Hi Gary , I have been happy altering CV's 3 & 4 before . Have had a go at the start voltages and it does make a difference and also reducing max. speed on a couple with CV's 5 & 6 , my latest 57 from Bachman I'm leaving alone as it's a good runner as are my Biffo fitted sounds . Richard This is the beauty of DCC it’s designed to be easy across the board for all ages. To be honest I don’t set all the other CV settings as these work well as default but as I’ve shown changing a few simple settings can make a big difference. I use the same controller after returning another. I am just writing a database to keep track of my collection and came back to look at what DCC settings you were discussing here. I have included DCC and DCC sound, decoder type, address, CV2, CV3, CV4, CV5, CV6, usual running speed step and maximum speed before it looks daft as data to refer back to.

Great video Gary. I'm an old model railroader of about 40 years ago. I have a bunch of HO track and trains in a box that I haven't used since. It's obviously DC...so this video really helped me get a better idea of what DCC brings to the realism on the track layout. I believe the track is Atlas brass track which I'm sure I have to clean before I even think of running anything.I'm trying to figure out where to start. I know I'm going to need a new engine that's DCC because I love the new sounds that come out of these new engines today vs. years ago. I'd love to hear from you to give me an idea of where to start because I know it's going to be s while to complete the layout. The size I'm going to be working with is probably going to be 4'x8'.Hope to hear from you soon, so I can put together a game plan to get started. Wow Mark sounds like you bought a ticket about the model railroad express and what a journey we’ll have 😉 Track is probably the most important part at this stage so make sure it runs every good A few DC test wires just check your heading the right way If you have problems at this stage at least you know it’s the track rather than heading on down the road struggling Then I would suggest looking at Brian Lambert on the Internet as he has a very basic look of dcc wiring but the more you read the more intense you can dive.. I know when I got my system- prototypical running was what I wanted but never understood how, many people don’t realise that we can simply change the easy cv’s without getting technical to achieve this.. A good video. I think which ever system you choose to use setting the CV's of the locomotive is a must. It allows you "drive" the loco instead of just "controlling" it. Keith

as long as both loco's are using the same speed step they should synchronize - it does depend also on what decoders as some decoder have certain speed stem parameters -ideally 128 will give more scope but mainly use 28 speed steps for quick set ups.. Hope this helps... Many Thanks.. Garry

Thanks for the comment, I would believe so as dcc mirrors in scale due and would relate to motor pull in scale size, but not something I have tried as I only model in OO scale currently.. With steam settings you would delay the motion to mimic the real thing.. but interesting to find out.. Thanks again..

But I thought conventional dc operated point switching might be simpler, cheaper and easier (and ultimately give similar results to DCC controlled point switching) so will probably go down this route. Apart from your video on installing points at a later date than your main layout construction and wiring, are there any other videos you would direct me to? Either by yourself or Brian Lambert? I find it’s quite tricky to find the precise summarised info for DCC loco control but DC point switching, especially on topics like electro frog automatic polarity switching etc etc Thanks again, your layout is awesome!

Hi Gary, enjoyed your video, as a newbie it was confidence inspiring. Are the instruction manuals of these gaugemaster controllers pretty clear? Can you explain how another controller is actually plugged in and used when you want to run trains with someone else? I'd also really like to know how the controller knew it was your test track? I presume that your main track and your test track are wired in separately somehow and somehow you've allocated them names etc?

Hi Alex Many thanks for your comment. For all dcc controller systems and this is generic each cab just plugs into the main controller unit - a splitter to extend more cabs cab be added to the main unit for multiple use - these just plug in and both cabs will work immediately Refer to gaugemaster prodigy advanced 2 manual this will guide you.. For programming you do need a separate track Known as (programming track) Your Main Track will be the layout itself When programming select the program button on the controller it will toggle between main track and programming track.. 👍 Cheers Garry

Hi buddy No don’t wire 12v 😮 Any compatible dcc system is 18v - only wire the dcc system to run your layout. This will have two outlets for track power 1= main track (the layout) 2= is the programming track these must be kept separate You can program any loco on either track but program track should be priority If you have more than one loco on main track - then it can potentially complicate other decoders. Hi Paul I think the early versions didn’t have the backlight display - which all new prodigy systems now have when connected - There are battery walk around wifi handsets, so this may have just a normal view to save battery.( but I have never used them ) it will say on the Gaugemaster web site under product information.. Hi Ken Yes 👍 as long as the main track and program track are separate then this is completely okay.... ie..from green plug on control unit - *Main feed wired to layout 👍 *Programme feed wired to separate track off layout for programming only. 👍 Because they are separate wiring they wont interfere This is done so that the hand set can program a train - and then be entered on the hand set to run it on the layout without re-wiring or changing anything- If you feel unsure refer to the user guide which can be found on the Gaugemaster web site under the prodigy product. Provided the loco has a sound decoder with speaker - like all DCC systems just use the F keys (function) Start with F1 and so on for higher values like F10 you need to press Shift first them F1 = F10 and do on.. Hope this helps 👍 Garry That’s all there is to it

Hi.would you happen to now what the SHORT codes mean,as i am having problems using me prodigy express controller and trying to power my layout Dcc, i pluged the power pack to the mains and put a multi-meter prob into the middle hole and the black on the outside reading of the jack plug 12.8v place the red prob to pin 3 of the green plug and the black to pin 4 reading 0.08 is that right, as i am not sure would be greatfull for you feed back thank you Brian

Hi Brian - ok my suggestion is to un-plug what you have and re-connect as the instructions/ these can be found on the Gaugemaster website in the advertised product / instructions, ✅ the green socket with 4 wire connecters (1234) from the power supply should be 🅰️ 1,2, is the main feed to the main track layout ( make sure that if red is left & blue is right on track make sure the whole layout follows your preference. 🅱️ 3,4, is the program track which must be kept separate from 1,2, feeds. - 🛑 As this is DCC you may find false reading on a test meter because the voltage is pulsing differently than DC. But start as mentioned and refer to instructions - this should be all ok ( hope this helps ) Garry

No you won't damage the loco as its the decoder chip data you are changing so this only changes the performance - THE CV values are designed to be changed by the operator - I play by changing CV settings as it help the running to get a prototypical feel for the loco.. Remember all Decoders have a backdoor RESET code to get you back to factory state. check your decoder values on pack - normally CV8 DATA 8 enter. 👍 I have some sheets on my website that may help www.cheekytek.com/dcc-advice start stopping sheets may help you get a feel Try changing CV 2 with is Volts starting - refer to manual default then -increase the CV3 values to slowly start -increase the CV4 values to slow stopping Personally I dont change CV29 which is the heart of many operations as that is a minefield unless you get to grips of it all.. Hi buddy- Yeap totally If you watch the video from 12:00 onwards and follow my settings or even half the values to suit you - your see this on your loco.. As a default I use I tend to do a loco as this then adjust up or down with these values on cv 3 & 4 Cv 1 - loco address Cv 2 - start volt = 6 Cv 3 - accel = 30 Cv 4 - decel = 40 Cv5 - blank enter CV. - blank enter Enter to finish Hope this helps buddy Cheers

DCC systems will run any loco weather sound fitted or just standard loco As long as each train has a decoder and a different address to identify it There are a lot of great books on DCC and how it works that will bring you the best out of your system. Think the Internet would be the best place to find something like that.. Cheers 👍

Hi buddy Most dcc controllers hold about 20 trains including Prodigy- as a rule so you can scroll through, not sure of others but gaugemaster will only store the first or last five once switched off but can be added as running up engines again. Z21 will hold up to 99 I believe and they sit on the display panel until activated this being a WiFi unit giving phone controller as a cab.. Maybe dive in to some research on dcc controllers and what you want from a system Hope this helps slightly All the best Garry

Hi Trevor sorry for the late reply Sound decoders yeap as the decoder will be programmed with DCC - all DCC systems are compatible so if you adding something that is a DCC product then all will work- If any concerns consult the manufacturer - prodigy is a Gaugemaster product - they will be too glad to clarify in detail over the phone.... Hi again Can you demo on CV 63.....l’ave no success on my latest purchase a WC 37. It is fitted with Lego sound which is soft compared with my other loco’s, thanks Roger

Make sure you program on test track as the prodigy handset only reads and writes to test track Main track you can write but not read, I only have one sound loco as sound is new to me but I’ll have a look to see what I can discover on cv 63 volume I’ll respond in a few days 👍
