It looks as if it was meant to be real life Gomba from Mario. Although shape of its head reminds me of something else: god-warriors from "Nausicaa of the valley of the wind", have you seen this movie? If not, I recomend it. Though it is studio Ghibli movie, godwarriors are pure nightmare fuel.
