That was what made it so funny. I forget who, but somebody once asked Jerry Seinfeld why he and Newman were enemies and why it was never explained. He just said there was no reason. He (and Larry David) just thought it would be funny for Jerry to hate one of his neighbors for seemingly no reason. I think ultimately telling the audience why he hated Newman so much would have cheapened the joke. We never knew why Jerry hated Newman, just like we never knew what “the incident” was.

One of the best shows of all time. But with so many I wish they paid more attention to the realism of the situations in terms of time of day. To have all these bar flies apparently they're even though working full time (or trying to as in Norm's case), they and the bartenders and waitresses always seemed to have evening plans. I realize it is more about the joke but I"m sure a balance can be found.
