Sad to see what the National has become but that's the world we live in today. Fantastic upload again many thanks.

Absolutely agree. The race is just a shadow of its former glory. It's the National now, not the Grand National. Rather sad. Like Dancing Brave is the best horse not to have won the Derby, Crisp is the best horse not to have won the Grand National.

@keithf_ I would rate Alverton as a better horse than Crisp.

@HorseRacingLegends that's very interesting. Yes when I think of Sea Pigeon as the best dual-purpose horse ever, I often think of Alverton as another great dual-purpose horse. I'm pretty sure he won an Ebor, a Cheltenham Gold Cup and I backed him in the Grand National, which I believe he was going to win, had he not fallen tragically.

He was placed in The Ebor and won the Arkle and The Gold Cup and his demolition job of Sweet Joe at Newbury with Ian Watkinson on board was something to behold and wish I could find footage of it.Yes cantering when he was killed at Bechers in 1979.A terrible end to a Great Horse.Winning in The Snow at Cheltenham was something I will never forget.

Proper race. Proper fences. Romantic stories. All lost. Arguably the greatest National finish. Thank you

I would love to see extended footage from 1977 and also in 1981 when they let Rummy run in front of the stands during the parade 😊

Absolutely top class upload as always. Thank you for uploading it. I was just wondering if anybody knows if Aintree was a mixed meeting in those days as Joe Mercer was there in the weighing room and I am sure I spotted Tony Murray in the background a well.

Sad to see the National has been reduced to a glorified cross country race.
