Great heartfelt tribute Ian. Colin scored the winning goal in my first game at Maine Road, a 1-0 victory over Blackpool in February 1967. He was my footballing hero from then on. I believe if has hadn’t have sustained that injury at the age of 29 he would have played into his late 30’s as he was a finely tuned athlete. So tragic he was cut down at the peak of his career. RIP King Colin

A great and moving tribute Ian thank you so much for the book I'm a Southampton supporter but growing up Colin was always my number 1 non saints player I think it has a lot to do with his running ability & goals. First England Midfield I remember Bell, Ball & Peters. Yes the number 4 shirt for England Mick Channon 8, sadly only saw him play once down here 78/79 season. My first Annual as a kid (Daily Mirror) has a great photo of him (the man who never stops running) opposite 1 of Franny Lee about 69/70. My Dad calling out to me about the terrible injury Nov 75 I have never forgotten. You can be so proud of Reluctant Hero and putting the story of such a talented modest man to print. City my second team ever since. Best wishes to you and the Bell family.

The first City kit I owned in the early 70's had the number 8 on it, as Colin was my boyhood hero. I had the privilege to meet Colin just once at the Etihad, a private, quiet, humble man. RIP Nijinsky.

Very beautiful words Ian and a fitting eulogy to a lovely man and a great athlete and footballer. He was a hero and idol to so many - me included - and the City fans who saw him play will never forget his legacy and the memories he gave us especially at Maine Road. What sadness to think he has gone. RIP Colin, and thank you.

I mean I'm one of those generations who didn't have a chance to watch him live, but after City's take over I could hear his name coming up a lot,and how older generation of City fans praises him,and comparing players with him, then I had to go on you tube and watch his clips to get to know him better,I mean he seems to have been a great talent, quiet, and good family man,a City fan and everything, I've heard fans comparing David Silva with him,I mean you can tell when all good players are being compared with him, that how good of a player he was,and I believe that,so my deepest condolences to his family and friends, relatives and all City fans, I can feel we lost a great City player, but his legacy will stay forever among us,please let him be in peace, and thank you for everything you have done for the club we all love,RIP LEGEND.

I also met Colin at the Bell Waldron Restaurant in '79 when I was secretary for the Crompton and Royton branch when we presented him with a trophy, thanking him for the memories. His goals are too numerous to go through here but his second v Czechoslovakia in I think '72 typified Colin Bell, he cleared the ball on the edge of the England penalty area and finished the move off at the other end with his goal. R.I.P Colin Bell, Legend, Hero, Gentleman.

I'm an Everton man myself, but I'll say that Colin Bell was a glorious footballer. In his pomp only Cruyff or Gunter Netzer were fit to lace his boots. He'd cost you 150 million quid these days and you wouldn't miss a wink of sleep worrying about having paid it.

Nice words Ian . Sending love your way . My greatest memory of Collin was his come back from injury game on Boxing day against Newcastle . I was one of the 50 thousand as I am sure you were, who was there that day , I will never forget the silence as the players came out at half time and we noticed one was missing , then he came out as a second half substitute and I think the Kippax made the loudest noise it has ever made . I was just a boy of eleven but I sure did know why the roar was significant . I dont think we will see a more complete player than Collin . A great loss to our Blue familly and an even bigger loss for his family .

Hi Ian. Hope you're o.k. after this sad news, although it's clear from this heart felt tribute that you're as upset as I am after Colin's passing. Unlike you I didn't know the legend, my admiration for the fella came purely from the incredible craft he displayed as a footballer. I posted on the MEN website saying just how special as a player Colin was in my opinion, his absolutely wonderful quality and class mesmerised me whenever I watched him play. There is no doubt Colin was up there with the very best there is on and off the field. My thoughts go out to his Family and friends like yourself Ian at this sad time. This particular King will never die for me he will live on in my heart and mind forever as he'll live on in our clubs history. Rest in peace Colin. A true legend. 💙

I never got to see Colin play, as i wasn't born until 1972 but i lived his flair and goals through my father, who supported city from 1950 and Bell was his all time favourite player. I lost my dad in 2005 but seeing Colin at games reminded me of all the stories my father told me about him. When he passed away yesterday, i felt a sense of loss to the old memories and it is an end of an era. Thanks for telling your story Ian at what must be a very emotional time for you. His memory will never die, he's a city immortal.

Very moving tribute Ian. Colin Bell was the reason I first went to watch City in the mid 70’s. My first ever match watching City was at Wembley for the 1970 League Cup Final v WBA. Don’t remember much about the match being knee high to a grasshopper and only 10 years old and perched on my dads mates shoulder, except that we won 2-1. And my dad buying me a Colin Bell Rosette on Wembley Way, which I wore with pride that day, wish I still had it. I started going to Maine Road regularly in 1974/75 when I was old enough to venture out of the house on my own. Everyone at school was talking about Colin Bell and the thing of the day was swapping player picture cards (remember them) everyone wanted a Colin Bell or Denis Law card. And if you got one you didn’t want to swap or part with it. I didn’t see the best of him being too young, but saw enough of Colin Bell to realise what a truly great player he was. And what he meant to MCFC and the fans. RIP Colin. We’ll drink a drink a drink to Colin the King the King the King, cos he’s the leader of Man City.

That was lovely personal tribute Ian and I can't help getting emotional at the thought he's no longer with us. He was hero to a lot of us fans of a certain era/age. A very special and talented footballer whose career was sadly cut short, ironically against United who we play tonight. I can't deny that tonight's game now takes on a greater significance and like a lot of fans it would be a fitting tribute if we were to win and then get to the final. Here's hoping. Even though I haven’t seen him play, I have heard great stuff about him from older generation. People say he used to run the midfield like a horse. His athleticism and stamina was unmatched. More than a player, he was humble, never in a limelight, which today’s players lack. RIP LEGEND. In the league cup semi-final against Man United, he was tackled by Buchan. Today we won our semi-final against Man United and what a tribute it is. Also, I ordered a retro 1972 t-shirt which he wore during his days.

Well if there is anybody who is qualified to do a tribute to Colin Bell, it has to you Ian. You are so lucky to have met him and spend so much time with .I didn't know you had written an autobiography of him, so I know which book I will be getting next. I wanted to be Colin Bell when I was young because he was the heartbeat of the team. He was such a powerful player and he let his football do the talking. I loved the way he played with such grace and force and so humble as well. I always wanted to hear an interview with him but , as you say, he was so retiring, he very rarely spoke in public. I was so pleased to hear him on your podcasts and realised what kind of a person he was, so I was in tears when I heard the news and have been so proud and sad when I heard all the tributes to him from a whole range of people. It is a fitting tribute that we have the 'Colin Bell' stand at the Etihad and so he will always be in our hearts. Thank you Ian and thank you Colin Bell, The King.
