I knew he was a real person, but I didn't realize just how much he did in his lifetime. Massive respect for selling his company to make sure his employees would still have jobs. Such a thing sounds so unlikely in big business, at least in this day and age. The quality of the can foods may no be too great, but for the price, it's honestly a decent meal that's gotten me through many hard times.

Same! I was listening to the video on my phone but I wasn't actually looking at my phone because I was looking for something. As soon as I heard him mention the words "chef boyardee commercial" I immediately looked at my phone and said "the one where the can rolls all the way home?" And got chills as I watched the clip of the commercial while screaming "YESSSSS!". Haven't even had a single thought of this commercial since I was a kid and yet all the nostalgia starting flowing in. Literal goosebumps, hair standing up and all.

The secret to Chef Boyardee is to just add some black pepper, parsley, oregano, garlic powder, and diced onion. It's just too bland straight from the can (to account for people with different taste) and needs the proper Italian seasoning.

@@audiowithdrawl5948 Sorry, but I never measure stuff when I cook. I just eyeball it, then decided based on taste if it needs a touch of something else. Basil, cumin, and coriander also work well, but just use a touch, because they're easy to overdo.

From 1988 to 1992 I worked as a reporter for The Milton Standard in Milton, Pa. Although he died before I worked there, the name Hector Boiardi is still spoken with great respected throughout the community. Each year, in September, Milton holds a Harvest Festival - originally known as the Tomato Festival - recognizing his invaluable contributions to the area. I wrote a number of retrospective articles about the man, using much of the information the you cited in your video. I also toured American Home Foods several times when gathering information about the company. They were always dedicated to producing the highest quality products for their customers, and proud of the "Boy-Ar-Dee" name that Hector had bestowed upon them. Side Note: In the mid-1990s, a series of comedic commercials were produced, depicting a young Hector Boiardi (about age 10) struggling to produce high quality meals that everyone could enjoy. Despite all the obstacles - including several adults who attempted to discourage him - the young "Hector" ended by saying he vowed that he would eventually go to America and accomplish his goal. When I spoke to the American Home Foods CEO about those commercials, he told me that Hector's son, Paul Boiardi, informed him his father would have loved those commercials. According to Paul, his dad had a great sense of humor, and would have appreciated him being used in such a way to promote his products.

@@dtdimeflicks6708 For sure. Definitely an acquired taste. I tried them again a few years ago and it just wasn't happening. Funny enough I kind of like Chef B Spaghetti, Ravioli and Beefaroni but never did like the Lasagna. You'd think the sauce in all 4 would be pretty much the same and it tastes that way for the rest except when I tried the Lasagna. Something different about it. I don't think I've ever liked any type of Lasagna in a can. Not sure what thats about lol. Edit..Maybe they are adding some type of cheese with the Lasanga. That could be it and the reason for it.

ConAgra really cheapened the recipe. The "Throwback Recipe" (You pictured a yellow can of it) is actually really good. Not the same product AT ALL. Too bad that I haven't seen it sold in about a year. ConAgra only cares about having a cheap commodity to sell; Not making a quality product that they can be proud of.

I still have one can left of the Lasagna "Throwback Recipe". It is good, I prefer over the current product. Same with the spaghetti & meatballs and beefaroni - never got to try the ravioli. The local Dollar Tree store had the last stocks of it (Lasagna was all they had left) and since we were all in the middle of the pandemic BS last year people just bought that stuff up.

I can believe that he could become a head chef at 17. Back in those days, you grew up faster and what was considered an adult, came at a younger age. Also, he had already been working in an old world kitchen in Italy for six years where he had time to see how to cook everything and how to make authentic Italian food. So yes, it is believable.

The concept of a teenager didn't become a "thing" until after WWII. So yes, if a kid takes up an apprenticeship instead of wasting time memorizing useless stuff in school, they'd have a lot of specialized work experience by the time they are a young adult.

I'm over 50 and I was there for much of this story, but I never knew for sure, being so young at the time. I remember hearing people talk about "The Chef", but they were 'adults' and I was just a kid. His story was just a story that few knew back then at best, as I remember it, but he wasn't completely unknown. That soon faded though. I never heard anything about him again by the 80's. All those 'who were there' (war vets, etc) had all vanished from my life. Funny to come across your report all these years later. Thanks for the odd 'closure' about "The Chef". Feels good to know my memories were accurate and that he was even better as a man than I ever knew. Much respect. :>
