Food Addiction Friday gives a warm welcome to Dr. Alan Goldhamer. Dr. Goldhamer is the founder of the True North Health Center. For our discussion today we will be focusing on his book, ‘The Pleasure Trap.’ The book provides a fascinating perspective on how modern life can turn so many millions of smart people into the unwilling and unknowing “ captives“ of processed food addiction. Dr. Goldhamer has a great handle on all of the factors that go into creating the epidemics of diet-related diseases driven by manipulation of our own internal pleasure trap. You will learn why overeating is not your fault. You’ll get great new ideas for what to do about it.
Dr. Alan Goldhamer is one of the world’s leading experts on medically supervised, water-only fasting. Articulate, inspiring, and energetic, he is a frequent lecturer and speaker on fasting, diet, and treatment of chronic diseases to achieve optimum health.
In 1984, Dr. Goldhamer founded and became Director of TrueNorth Health Center in Santa Rosa, California; since then, he has supervised the fasting and care of more than 20,000 patients. TrueNorth Health is a multi discipline practice that includes doctors of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, and psychology. Its healthcare providers treat patients with conditions ranging from high blood pressure and diabetes to autoimmune disorders and lymphoma. The Center is the largest facility in the world specializing in medically supervised, water-only fasting and one of the premier training facilities for doctors to gain certification in the supervision of therapeutic fasting.
TrueNorth Health utilizes a nutritional medicine approach based on an exclusively whole-plant-food diet free of added salt, oil, and sugar (SOS). The Center is affiliated with the TrueNorth Health Foundation, whose mission is to expand evidence-based knowledge of how medically supervised, water-only fasting and diet impact human health; train clinicians in the use of these interventions; and share its findings with researchers and the public.
Dr. Goldhamer is the author of The Health Promoting Cookbook and co-author of The Pleasure Trap-Mastering the Hidden Force That Undermines Health and Happiness. He is also the principle author of two landmark studies that showed evidence of the benefits of water-only fasting, as well as numerous case reports published in peer- reviewed indexed journals evaluating the effects of water-only fasting in the treatment of a variety of conditions.
Joan Ifland. Dr. Ifland has been creating breakthroughs in recovery from food addiction from 1999 with the publication of her first popular book. In 2018 her textbook was published, Processed Food Addiction: Foundations, Assessment, and Recovery (CRC Press) and she founded the online peer support, The Addiction Reset Community (ARC). The textbook is the first academic publication describing how to diagnose and treat processed food addiction, as well as establishing the scientific basis for the disease.
Dr. Ifland’s work is based on findings that processed food addiction can be severe and that addicted people are often traumatized. These findings shifted the field to more comprehensive programs designed to resolve stress, isolation, and mobility issues. Reset Week is the first online live program for withdrawal (2018). ARC Manager Training (AMT) produces ARC leaders and leads to the Food Addiction Recovery Advocate (FARA) Certification (2020). Today she is developing the Remission Optimistic Community (ROC) to support remission of diagnoses labeled as ‘incurable.’

little old me, been yo yo dieting 55 yrs, b4 finding Chef AJ & these Dr's. , wishes it wasn't called "food addiction", but "processed food addiction". since none of us are addicted to kale or broccoli, etc., that i know of. & from what i understand, salt, sugar & oil are not foods any way, no nutrition. learned from Chef AJ, & all the Dr's i found through her . Finding her saved my life, coming from nearly bed/home bound at age 66, & since following her & others, regained my health & mobility & lost 100 lbs too, by changing what i eat & drink. I do tell my story under my introductory video i started over 3 yrs ago, wanting to shout it from the roof tops, but can't, so thought this would be how to tell others, it can be done, bc, if i can do it, any one can. Matter of detoxing from SOS ,etc.. & now i do not crave those old foods, SAD foods. Sorry this is so long. Tnx Chef & Dr's, as always 🥦🥬🥒🫑🌶🌽🥕🥔🍆🍅🫒🫐🍓🍇🍌🍊🍉🍇🧄🍄🧅🍠

Dr Goldhamer reminds me of Dr Jamnadas, he calls it like it is, addiction and we are addicts. Ha! Ha! Agree 100%. Love how Dr Ifland respects Dr Goldhamer. Good conversation AJay. I will continue to fight my addiction, IF is helpful.

@@jgrysiak6566 No salt is very hard I agree. I have cut out flour, alcohol, sugar, oil but salt ? Cannot quite give it up.

@@smallfootprint2961, salt helps my depression & chronic fatigue. I get very lethargic & depressed on a no salt diet & start to get dizzy when I get up!

@lizziedripping71 , because Dr. Mcdougall says we have tastebuds for salt. Even deer like it. No salt diets make me very lethargic & depressed! I also get dizzy when I get out of a chair. MY grandmother was on a low salt diet & got dizzy & fell & broke her hip & died. I like salt on certain things like tomatoes or avocado toast. U must have salty food for sweating if u drink a lot of water in the summer or u will lose all your electrolytes & end up in a hospital. True story! I have major depression & chronic fatigue so I must have some salt I have major depression & chronic fatigue. It took me years to get off flour products, I was so addicted to them on a vegan diet. Now I eat whole food & only about 6 slices of Ezekiel bread toast a week!

@jgrysiak6566 I relate to that, I have a very low blood pressure. Salt was ( is ) the hardest thing for me too. I ignored that😂 now I know it helps me but!! It’s a major trigger for me to overeat. I want to put it on everything all the time after a while. I’m very sensitive to it appearantly. Like I can eat a full can of chickpeas when it’s salted, half when it’s not. But if you can handle to put it on the things you say without overdoing it and without trigger it’s fine I think. I have to say, my body adapted after a long time, little dizziness now. But I eat lots of “ salty “ things like celery and started incorporating more seafood like nori,. Good for you to be able to eat ezekiel bread only once in a while👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻

My kids have been whole food plant based since conception. We talk about why we eat healthy, they help me make food, they choose to say no to almost all junk outside of the home that they are offered and choose the healthy snacks that I pack for them instead. Environment is so key. We keep it simple and they love healthy food.

Good for you!!!!!!! I love this!!!!!!!!! It’s very hard so see parents giving their kids processed meats, dairy, ( cheese…) knowing it’s so bad for them. And not being able to discuss it bc it’s so normal for everyone to do so. “ they are eating healthy in the other meals, they’re young and active, they need it”. Even now my nephew is struggling with stomach pains I say try to eliminate dairy they just don’t. Very hard. His parents are thin and “ healthy “ so…

Controlling our environment is challenging with ubiquitous abundance of processed foods wherever we go. Finding Clean eating environments and like minded people has always been my problem. Online communities are my safe support thus far.

Thank you for mentioning the suicidal thoughts and depression coming with the processed foods. I’ve struggled a lot in my life due to that. And still, the last few months bc I fell off the wagon. Nobody talks about it. Even when I was in a severe burnout with mayor depression. You’re right about the pathways. For a while I tried to regulate it (and helping me with my adhd) with Ritalin. I quit that for healh and anxiety reasons but its very difficult to keep my motivation and feeling-good on check

If you’re starting the day w oats and maybe a piece of fruit, and if you’re having greens for every meal - I like cabbages - then a sweet potato is an excellent dessert 👊🏼

I absolutely love Dr Goldhamer. He really knows how his stuff but I was so annoyed during the entire video because she kept cutting him off so often. Very knowledgeable information nevertheless!

I think he cutted her off too. And she wanted to bring in her things and questions too. I think he ( also) acts a little annoyed bc it’s his way to bring the message. And maybe he gets annoyed from telling us the same things over and over again for all thus years and not seeing progress in the world😅😂. But great information nevertheless 👌🏻

I have been treating my patients using whole flavorful plant foods last 18 yrs and other dietitians and doctors called it “vodoo” treatment! Individuals have more power to make a change….

For me it’s still incredible that eating rice with broccoli and lentils , maybe some crazy days some tofu, is called radical. Not eating all the other things( when Im doing well I have to say that) called bizar and strange. All the addiction is normal, getting covid is normal, clotted arteries are normal. Hurting all the animals and the earth it’s normal and treated like like “ yeah it’s the way it is “. ( don’t know the proper English explanation for it😅). It’s very hard sometimes….

Teachers in the break room are munching on processed foods, refined sugars & oils & salts while siping on caffeine. Then go home to alcohol as their norm.

Food combining with whole foods can be stretched out over the week. Personally I transitioned from layering proper food combinations from short digestion to longer digestion foods. So I have now moved an every other day regimen, sweet fridays, melon Sundays, acid mondays, & sub acid Wednesdays. In natural hygiene we know that a healthy variety of nutritious foods avoids too much of the same food every day leading to excess.

Falling off the Wagon - I wonder if the question about it taking a long time to get back on the wagon has (in part) to do with not listening to ourselves when on the wagon. If we push ourselves too much or in an unhealthy or unsustainable way (eg negative self talk, calorie restriction, bland food, long tedious recipes, trying to change too much too fast while still juggling other life stresses, etc), then we can build resentment towards the lifestyle. Then, like getting out of an unhealthy relationship or job, we may feel we need a recovery period before starting back up again.if that's it, then catching and addressing the negative feelings (abd/or behaviors) before we build resentment may help.

Think this post is maybe what you refer. Natural Hygiene was taught by Natives to USA medical people & those teachings remained the law of the land up until the late 1800's when big pharma began to take over making Natural Hygiene unjustly obsolete until early 1900's when Herbert M. Shelton re founded the orthopaedic practice at his health sanatoriums & by the 1950's he ran for potus, but big oil land grabs & big pharma swindles had a monopoly by then, also it was further corrupted by the liquor industry that had spiraled out of control as a drug of choice ever since the 1930's. So it is way past time to make Natural Hygiene a part of our daily lives again, as the once sober apple cart was upset too many times over the years by oppressive governmental inebriated addicts who have been increasingly abusing a once sound medical practice here in America for far too long. Here is my take on needed improvements for those who have yet them or even considered changing these corrupt current laws yet. Back around the 70's regan began shutting down state hospitals to save taxes for the rich resulting in an ever increasing spiral of homeless street people & overcrowded prisons. Regan was inebriated on his bubbly. That points to another mess up that occurred back in the 30's when they made alcohol their drug of choice as legal recreation & criminalized other intoxicants. Past time for a resolution to both these gross errors. 1- make all drugs & alcohol legal medically with supervision. 2-drug & alcohol test all law enforcement, politicians, & gun owners at their own expense, never illegal recreation. Until those insane obsolete laws are changed with appropriate resolutions the errors of the past will continue to escalate.

The problem is the problem. The problem isnt the overeating or the myriad diseases that may arise out of eating EXCESS ultra processed products. The problem is what drives the addictive behaviour that returns you to repeat ad nauseum the behaviours that keep you in the cycle. Why are we still looking at fat as the boogie man?

I totally thought the same thing about the interruptions! Eventually he addaped to her communication style though. She has a very female style. Most men find it very difficult to adapt to that (just bc the way their brains are wired differently), but Dr. Goldhamer made it work. He's awesome. And, she did have some good insights...once Dr. G worked out the flow.

⁠@@kathysharp7551Indeed I agree, it’s not easy to get a word in among Dr Goldhamer’s flow, which I enjoy but hear quite often, so.. whereas yes at first I was uncomfortable and a bit irritated like many others, but I realised he was adapting well, slowing down, and the points being made were good. It was definitely different and I shall listen a second time!
