Weekend at Cheia, Râmeţ commune - abandoned village.
One of the 13 localities of Râmeţ commune is the village of Cheia, a hamlet located in the southwestern part of the commune, whose name comes from the fact that it is surrounded by 4 keys: the Geogel Keys in the northwest, the Râmeţ Gorge in the south-eastern part, the Piatra Balti Cheile and Cheile Pravului in the south-west. The more beautiful it is, the harder it is. Situated among so many natural beauties, the usual access to this village is made on foot from the village of Bradesti, located on the edge of DJ 107 I, on a forest path that follows the valley water in about 45 minutes.
At Cheia there are only tourists who visit the Râmeţ Cheile, located nearby. In the center of the village, in an isolated clearing, there was a school in Cheia, transformed by the "Apuseni Mountain Club" Association into an ecological surveillance base of the area. The Association, headquartered in Cluj-Napoca, has as main objective the protection and conservation of endangered wild species.
Situated in a narrow valley, surrounded by forests and with little land that allows farming to be practiced, the village has not known a great development over time. The main occupation of the inhabitants was the raising of animals and the practice of subsistence agriculture. On the Keystone there were several decades ago, nine water mills, also sought by residents from other villages.
50 years ago in Cheia there were 60 families. "Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main occupation of the inhabitants. Because of the situation, most young people choose to leave. The old men left behind can not work. We can not help them. At Key, almost everyone has gone to better areas. Some in other villages of the commune, others away, to the city "
