The peak of your career happened when I was having babies, so I didn't follow you as closely as I did your predecessors or some that have followed you. After watching some of your adult journey videos, I went back to watch you in your "prime." If anything, you're better. You're right, you're in better shape and there's a maturity to you now. I hope you keep going and you let this take you wherever you want it to go. I also hope you let your new ideas about fitness, nutrition and caring for an injury trickle down to your students. In an era of Maggie Haney and people of their ilk, you could demonstrate a way forward. A path towards continued gymnastics excellence without abuse and physical neglect.

This made me cry. I'm so happy she has a healthy relationship with food and with her body now. Her message is important for EVERYONE - food is fuel, not contraband, and exercise is for using your body, not punishing yourself for eating!

I train for swimming in Japan, and my coaches also get in the water and do the same sets with us. Even though they are in their 50's and training an elite team, they are still able to put up incredibly fast times during sprint sets, and grind it out with us in longer ones. So I really appreciate Chellsie's mentality here. I think it's a great thing to get in there and set the example for what you want to see by doing it with your athletes, and it helps create a stronger bond with them. This was one of the major differences I noticed between training in America and Japan, so I'm glad to see other coaches are adopting it^^

I love that you addressed the "weight" issue. You have inspired me at 35 and 295 pounds to try to do everything I can to be stronger and healthier. I've always wished I could flip and such. I don't think that's in the cards at my age and weight, but it has helped me build my confidence and keep me active lately. To me a gymnast is one of the most powerful athletes out there. I'm always in awe watching all things gymnastics. I can't even imagine how y'all make your bodies twist and turn and balance the way you do.

I’m behind on your journey because my life got in the way, but I’m binging now to catch up and you are truly an inspiration. I love that you have been really conscious about not falling back into old habits of weight management and training (starving yourself and killing yourself in the gym). There’s really something to be said about age and space away from competitive training to give you perspective AND to remind you of why you did it in the first place-for the love of it. I feel like you’re reinventing the whole idea of what it is to be an elite gymnast! Thank you so much for sharing this beautifully imperfect journey!

I grew up in sports at the same time as Chellsie and I wish our coaches/parents had taught us a more balanced approach to training and eating. If I had known then what I know now, my capabilities as a young athlete would have been so much greater. Because I now have a better understanding of a balanced diet and a balanced training style, I'm much more capable at 32 than I was as a teenager. I hope that now that we are the ones who are the coaches and parents, we can teach our lessons learned to young athletes and help them be the best and healthiest athletes they can be. As an adult looking to get into gymnastics-based training, I love following this journey.

I’m so glad she talked about the food as fuel. I always heard about restrictive eating in the sport and I thought: why? They burn more than they eat to begin with so there isn’t a point in it. Not really. Then I read Aly Raisman’s book about working with a nutritionist and how that helped make her better in 2016 than she was in 2012. She was awesome in London but I felt she was more balanced and stronger in 2016. Never understood why there wasn’t a nutritionist for the athletes. I admire that she is doing this to feel strong and healthy. It’s inspiring. I do the same in my classroom. I don’t give them an assignment I haven’t already done myself. Just makes it easier because the kids see that mine isn’t perfect but I did my best and they try harder.
@ChellsieMemmel234 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I think its super important and hope more can find a balance when they are younger. But really, we do not burn as much as you'd think just doing a normal day of gymnastics training.

Thank you for this!! I had such an unhealthy relationship with food & workouts when I was young. & If I wasn't in the gym I was swimming, diving, ice skating, hiking. I did whatever I could to keep active & keep my muscles engaged. As you age you realize that you can have treats in moderation & workout in moderation & have a healthy body. I hope there are younger girls that see your videos & know they can be the best & live a little too. I understand that those that can/will make it to a high level have to be very disciplined but it's not a reality for most & that's ok. I was 100 lbs at 18 standing 5'6", that's not healthy. At 21 I was about 115-120 & thought I was, that word. I think I worked out more & harder at 21 than I did in gymnastics. I now know how unhealthy that was but back then you had to be skin & bones to get noticed by the coaches. Ok, I'm over that rant. I'm glad to hear how you are with your girls in the gym. You're an inspiration! & I'm glad you're not pushing with a sore hammy. Hopefully endurance will come back with repetition. Also I hope your shoulder holds up & you're able to work the bars as well. We're all rooting for you!! 💜

You look and sound amazing! It’s so obvious how your maturity in your training is paying off! I’d love to hear how getting in shape after having kids went. That’s the most daunting thing for me, I’m currently expecting my first and am overwhelmed by the thought of getting back in shape after baby. I have kept up gymnastic type conditioning and training in adulthood bc it’s the only way I enjoy exercise and am so inspired by you to continue!

Thank you! May do another video about that as I have gotten a lot of follow up questions. I gave my body time, it took a lot longer after my first than my second to get back into shape. Yes! Conditioning, Conditioning, Conditioning... I love it!!! It all feels different because you are a different version of yourself. It took all those years of experience to become who and what you are now and becoming... Your training sounds perfect and right on target. Health and safety first!!! Keep your body healthy, fit, flexible and nimble. Keep making it easy for your mind to make it all happen. Overtraining and repetitive drilling is NOT effective or efficient for an experienced body and is NOT required.

Arabian Queen! You have reached idol status in my book! Thank you for this video, thank you for your positivity and the amazing role model you are for our upcoming girls. Three things: 1) Buy some grips. Just do it. If they sit unused...give them to a girl in the gym, but at this point in time...you should own some grips girl. 2) That front tumbling looks amazing. I'm secretly hoping that just for fun you decide to learn a new skill...the Podkapeyeva. I think you would be amazing at the double front half out. Your front tumbling was always underrated in my book. Especially if it is easier on your hamstring :-) 3) I love that you spend some weeks on mostly conditioning, that is amazing and will do your body well! Sometimes weeks don't go as planned (I am a math professor and I have those weeks as well!), but some positive can always come out of them. Also, thank you for taking time to talk about your weight and how that affects your bars training and the mindset it can give you. Your positive outlook on food and nutrition is welcome for all our athletes old and young. You look so fit and strong that it is often hard for us outsiders to even fathom you think about the number on the scale and how it affects skills. Ultimately, we (I) hope that you stay strong and fit and un-injured and continue on the journey for as long as you see fit. Slay Queen!

7:35 I hope you can be an example for so many more with this. Although the behaviour and information about this is already shifting, so many young kids are still brought up with those restrictive food thoughts. And that's a shame, but when you are younger and brought up with that 'vision' it is kinda impossible to realize that it can and should be different I think.

What is the difference between the strap bar and regular bar? As far as physically I mean? Does it put less strain on the body using the strap bar?

Strap bar is only about an inch in diameter (like men's high bar), and it is metal. Uneven bars are about one and a half inches in diameter and are made of fiberglass covered with wood. Doesn't sound like a big difference, but it definitely feels like it in the gym!

Physically, yes because you do not have to use all your muscles to hold on to the bar and make sure you don't fly off since you are strapped in. It allows you to work on shapes/feeling/spotting and for me it is a great test for my shoulder.

So inspiring. Thank you for sharing Chellsie. I hope you read this. I am a singer and I have a german ultrasonic massager called Novafon Pro. It can be used in many other parts on the body. It's incredible for recovery. You should check it out. 🙏🏻

Can anyone explain to me what's her goal? i just know that she already competed at beijing, but what is she training for now? :)

She hasn’t committed to anything yet but we’ll see what happens. If she loves doing it, I don’t see any reason to stop hanging with the best in the world
