I’ve been watching Hank and John since 2008, and I think what has inspired me the most during that time-seeing them become super successful-is their approach to not wanting to maximize profits. Since I was raised in American culture, I have that impulse to want The Most and have to fight myself on being opportunistic, and observing how they run their businesses has helped with that.

The lowest paid TFD person makes $60,000 a year? That’s great. (I hope it’s ok that I did the math publicly in a comment). I assumed that they’d make much lower as someone in a journalism or content-type of position. But that’s great since the cost of living in NYC is so high.
@camelopardalis845 жыл бұрын
I guess Chelsea is the one making the most money and since she made her own salary super public it was she herself who made the lowest salary that someone at TFD makes public and by extension every other TFD employee's. You really didn't do more than spread this information a bit further since not everybody who sees your comment has seen the video in which Chelsea mentions her salary and also remembers the information they got there. It is also important to make this kind of information as public as possible. You could even go so far as to say that you're not able to give really informed "consent" (borrowing an expression here) if you're in a job interview and told that you'd earn a annual salary of x in a full-time position if you don't know what comparable - not necessarily similar - jobs in the same company and in other companies pay. I am also glad to know what kind of salary I'd pretty much make a fool out of myself for accepting without really needing a(nother) job. That I could tell you which salary I would not get up for in the morning without absolutely having to do so.

Around 9:30 she says her salary is “only $15k more than the lowest paid person” and given the size of her apartment in NYC that doesn’t make sense on $75k/yr. (ETA: in another video she shared she was living in 650 sq ft apt at the time, which still sounds large for many parts of NYC but maybe she had roommates)

KW eightthree I agree, the society benefits from these greedy people, even if they look bad if you focus on them. Good analogy is the concept of “bankrupcy” paired with “corporations”. It allows people to lose other people’s money and walk away, which is an incentive to be less responsible. But modern economy wouldn’t exist without it, because no one would invest in anything. But as always, there is a balance. And we have zero idea if we have more than ideal number of greedy people, or the society would,benefit from even more...

The discussion around the 10-minute mark reminds me of some things Lindsay Ellis (and others) has pointed out in the recent-ish past. Namely that: a) Even channels that look like they're just one person talking into a camera are often the work of at least two people, and in her case upwards of half a dozen b) Income from Patreon and sponsorships don't go directly to those people's salaries. There's taxes, fees, insurance, licensing, equipment, travel and all sorts of other running costs. So while at first glance it may seem absurdly greedy that Johnny Opinionman gets paid $8000 a month on Patreon to talk about video games and still shills for Squarespace, the reality is often that it takes three people to maintain the kind of quality (or quantity) that draws in $8000 worth of patrons and after paying taxes and production costs those people are actually kind of struggling.
@hausafilmstv5 жыл бұрын
Nice transparent talk. I agree, there's just sooo much secrecy when it comes to incomes and that kind of stuff and perhaps that results into unforeseen issues like the ones mentioned (CEOs earning 9999x more than a normal employee).
@BTheBlindRef5 жыл бұрын
Except that this particular example is terrible, because CEO compensation is public record as per financial disclosure requirements (at least for the public companies to which most of this discussion applied), so the idea that it's "salary secrets" that keep everyone from knowing how much executives get paid is bunk. I agree that executive compensation is out of control, but the cause and effect between the culture of compensation secrecy and income disparity is non-existent.

I almost once got disciplined at a job for talking about wages. Like, how can groups of people who are historically paid less advocate for better pay if they don't know how devalued they are? We get in trouble for discussing salaries because if we do then we realise how much the business we work for is exploiting us and it may lead to collective action to get better wages.

As a guy who has been watching Vlogbrothers nearly since the beginning I did want to hear about how these two are riding their roller coaster success. DFTBA is perfect and the symbol was a huge selling point for me, my parents wedding toast was unsurprisingly "Live long and prosper"(LLAP) so I was a geek before I was even born it seems. I am just making my own path on KZbin as just a whiskey guy who is a complete dork playing PC games to cope with his life? I would love to talk with Hank or John in person someday but I am stuck on the east coast and I don't make any real income from my channel yet. Being on disability and simply having severe mental disabilities. My enjoyment of whiskey actually helped me STOP drinking as much as I had been. I was using it to self medicate as all the pills I have tried over nearly a decade did not help me cope with my issues. The final straw was realizing after a blood test that they had been damaging my liver levels I do hope to freely talk about my medical cannabis journey at well someday since it honestly also helped me gain control over my life again. Both Hank and John have had to cope with growing up in American culture with disabilities, and they have come out the other side. I too am doing what I can to get my life back together, I too love making money but I don't want it to be my motivator to create anything. I am making videos and streaming because it's fun, as someone mentally disabled I cannot hold a normal job nor can I start making lots of money per month (I cannot make more than $1000 a month or I lose my monthly disability check to survive). I am not doing anything online for profit, I do it because I enjoy it. If someday I can make some sort of income from that too. Well I think that is what being successful actually should feel like. LLAP, DFTBA
