So I have duo citizenship. Like you I'm very acquianted with both countries. I married a Turk when I was 20 years old. I have 3 children and a grandson. God did I enjoy your story about Agri. Nothing you mentioned is wrong all the facts are correct because I've done extensive tours to the region of Turkey. I salute you for your courage. What an experice. If you survive these places you can travel to almost anywhere an earth. Now you have a very vivid insight of under developed places. Use your experinces in a usefull way. Now you have seen a corner of a different world. When you live all your life in the States you get the impression that the whole world is like that,but unfortunetly, like Agri there are some many places that are deprived from modern life. The hospitals in regions like this are just like you describe. One doctor takes care aruond 50-60 patience a day. I wish the mother didn't insist to move with the children to Agri. It was a risk. You getting sick constantly openned the way for you and the children to move back to Izmir. You constantly got sick because the food water everything was foreign to you.I'm going to follow you and hope to keep incontact with you😄

These people (all the government officials, doctors, teachers, etc) serving in the east, risk out their lives to serve an underdeveloped part of the country, to help people in need. Terrorists specifically target them, because they feed off of this regions poverty. They are not 'freedom fighters'.

I’m from İzmir and moved to Eskişehir a month ago with my sis (she started studying at uni here) I love Eskişehir (so much better than the small village I live in İzmir) but this video made me miss İzmir as a local, thank you for sharing your experience. West and east have such different culture in Turkey, I’d be shocked too, despite that I’m Turkish. I can’t imagine how you dealt with that.

I LOVE THIS! In 2005 I visited Mardin, Sanliurfa, etc... took a 2 hour taxi ride to Diyarbakir!!! THERE WAS AN AMERICAN IN THE TAXI... we were stopped by police every few miles! No problem, just curiosity... We stopped to visit nomadic Kurds, friends of the driver... I HAD TEA with them! THEN, a 22 hour bus ride back to Izmir! Long story (and a good one!), but a wonderful ride! I love Turkey!

Your experience in Agri is much different from the modern bubble most of us live in big cities. But what you saw is the real life in for the majority of people around the world. How did you feel when you saw children with rotten teeth? How did you feel when you saw poverty without any hope of a better standard of life? Did you not feel to help in any way? Were you not angry with the world that has the means to help? I would guess that Izmir also has poor areas with children having rotten teeth. But usually foreigners don’t go there, and locals that have are middle economic class. You were lucky to have that experience, I would love to go to Agri and help people. I am not a dentist to help the children for free. I am a computer programmer and can help children understand programming, Microsoft excel, etc. I can also help them learn English as English is an international language. And I will gladly learn the Turkish language. I love Turkish people and culture.

I’m an iranian who lives in İstanbul but a few months ago that I was in Iran we decided to take a road trip to turkey and when we crossed the border we got to ağrı in two hours and spent the night there it was such a tiny city but had really nice people. Gossip is always more in small towns where ever you go in the world cuz small number of people who have the same culture live together for along time. My family lived in Igdir for government duty for 3 years back in 1987 when i was a child. I had the best time in my life! I like your prononcuation, you sound natural. I know you pay attention to that, and that's probably because you try to pronounce "Ağrı" with a closed A (little close to O). It may be the accent in Ağrı but you can use a lighter open A, that will sound more natural in Turkish.

İzmir and Ağrı seem to represent the two most different Turkish cultures. Ağrı is generally a more religious, difficult to reach and small city. When we talk about from Izmir, Turkey is one of the most modern cities. Its people have adopted the modern western culture. It can be considered a mega city due to its population and you can easily find alcohol :)
