The video is fantastic, would be grateful if you could elucidate how the presence of ethanol as a solvent increases the value of rho.

Rimjhim Shukla it’s because EtOH stabilizes the anion less than H2O, as a result, the reaction is more sensitive to substituent effects when performed in ethanol. Rho is a measure of sensitivity of a reaction to substituents. Substituents can either help spread out the charge (stabilizing intermediate) or create adverse conditions for charge delocalization (destabilizing the intermediate). Solvents can do a similar thing. If the solvent can stabilize the charge through hydrogen bonding (anion stabilizing) or electron donation (cation stabilizing) it can make the reaction less sensitive to substituent effects since the solvent is already helping to stabilize the intermediate. In the case of water vs ethanol, water stabilizes anions more than ethanol (better hydrogen bonding).
