Chemical Attack

I have lost count of the number of times that this phenomenon has been wrongly diagnosed as fungal decay and it is easy to see why. This short video should give the less experienced surveyors a better understanding of this issue should you come across it in the future.

it's a good idea to hot limewash the beams as well, it helps prevent further rot.

Hi Neil, I got a similar issue on my roof, but no chemical attack or decay on timber, or mold, just lime mortar falling off. Do you think redoing the torching under roof tiles will help prolong the life of the roof? Also timber should be painted with acrylic waterproof paint? Thanks

Retorching is a good idea. Never paint anything lime based or touching lime with acrylic paint as it sweats. Hope this helps.
