Today I am chemically removing all the paint and rust off this classic 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera prior to its complete restoration. I’m going to take you through the process we use to completely chemically strip cars down to bare metal. This is a more thorough alternative to sand/media blasting with no chances of metal warping on thin panels. This process shows you exactly what you are working with and gives you a blank canvis to work with!
It is a 3 step process
Step 1) alkaline degreaser and paint remover
Step 2) Food grade Rust removing acid
Step 3) Water based rust inhibitor
The total process takes around 6 weeks because we use environmentally safe chemicals.

@@richardhill1377 Best of luck with your car! Targas are tough, especially near the seat belt inner fender mount, and at the base of the targa hoop, and down that pillar to the rear of the rockers and the cucumber…once that is straightened out, if you have solid rockers, the cars are surprisingly very rigid - best to jig them to ensure they remain true and then lock down on a fixed dolly while performing work. Enjoy!

I can't imagine the value of a restored 1974 Porsche Carrera Targa in a great color, or the condition of this car prior to restoration, but I'm very glad to see the process unfold. This video shows the final disassembly -- everything from the point forward is the long, arduous task of restoration and rebuilding. That may take a lot of time and money. I hope it's worth it. Would love to see the completed project. Good luck to all involved!

I used to be the clean up/ tear down/ catalog parts guy at a Porsche specific restoration shop (hated that job, the owner was a really big steaming pile of.. well he wasn’t a very decent person to work for is what I’m saying) and I can tell you that car had been mangled several times, the repair work is decent tho, hopefully this next place gets it dialed in. Excellent video came out clean and shiny if it’s an original green car, it’s pretty rare, I’ve only seen two originals when I was working there in the late 90s

@@christopherminks6607 from my experience you found a gold nugget, as I said I’ve only seen two original green Carreras, I had the pleasure of working on one of them, I hope you get her dialed in, the one I worked on had 22k original miles and was absolutely perfect, garage kept since new and basically stored in an environmentally controlled shop/garage. I hope you get this one back up to its former glory, very very rare Porsche. While working there I bought my father a 1968 912, as you know the 912 isn’t special but it was flawless and he’s kept it as so even today, 96k original miles and he still takes it out on weekends sometimes.

It is probably very disheartening for the owner of a vintage automobile to discover just how bad it really is under that layer of glossy paint. A good friend who is no longer with us dipped nearly every restoration project as first order of business. Obviously he knew the value of the cars before beginning to work on them. The higher the potential value of the finished vehicle, the less the cost of dipping was a factor. More than anything, he was like an artist with a preference for clean sheet beginnings. I regret never asking him the question regarding dipping results and the continuation (or discontinuation) of the project. The Porsche in this video appears to need a lot of work. It leaves me wondering if the value of a 1974 Carrera will accommodate the hours of labor it will take to get the metal in acceptable condition to commence with the remaining time and money needed to finish the job? Not an unusual question I understand. I get the impression that even guys like Jay Leno have to decide to hit the go/no go button. This generation of Porsche is not one I know much about. However if other viewers watching have an idea of what happens next with this car, I'd be curious to know. Thank you.

Candidly, as the owner of this car, my initial impression was that we may want to consider bailing, but after Porsche verified not only that she’s a very early chassis US market Carrera Targa in original No. 137 Lime Green, but optioned with a russet interior, and a true 1 of 1 car. the Metal work is nearly done, the doors, original ducktail hood and front fenders are already in primer, and the balance of the chassis and bits will be in paint in less than a month. Not a cheap project, but was bought right, is numbers matching, and among the rarest of the rare vintage Porsche. Will be right at home parked next to my 74 Mexico Blue Carrera Coupe!

Awesome video. I love that poison green colour, I assume it's the original colour. I hope they restore it in that same colour, I can't imagine they'd choose a different colour. Especially that dull grey 😁. At some point in time bright colours for sure went out of fashion, luckily bright strong colours are nowadays (since 2 decades or so) associated again with fast, sportive cars (although lots of Porsches are still bought in grey and black, the faster models (like gt3 etc) are often brightly colourd, same goes for Lamborghini's, Lotussen, Mclarens etc.) Having a vintage Porsche in such a bright original colour is probably a dream for many car enthousiasts (of course the paint won't be original, but having a completely restored one is nice too 😉).

In truth, the car was originally optioned with a russet interior, rendering it a true 1 of 1 car…hence our commitment to its concourse restoration! Thats a wrecked 74" Porsche 911, but I dont think it was iriginally built as a Carrera. I believe it made into a "Carrera". There were not many original made and what few that havent wrecked are worth a pretty penny. Thise are not tje correct flares from the body, the body panels themselves are much to thin of a gage metal, one reason of hiding the sin of cheap replacement parts and many layers of filler and paint may have caused thise panel to warp badly... most especially after the wreck. Thank you for anotjer wonderful video Mr. Trevor.🙏💜

Hey thanks for your opinion, but unfortunately it is an ill informed one. This car was bought reasonably, due to its needs. It was fully PPI’d, and verified as not only a genuine 74 US Market Carrera Targa, but a very early chassis, with genuine and correct rear RS flares, and factory welds. Added to that history, the car was optioned with an original russet interior, and while not my taste, renders it (as verified by Porsche) a true 1 of 1 car. The metal work is nearly complete and the car is being restored by a top, well respected Porsche restoration shop (60 year history in restoring Porsches) and will be back in its factory original No. 137 Lime Green color, to a concourse level. When we put the chassis on a jig we were shocked to discover how solid and straight it remains - the doors and targa top fit without shims or issues the day we received it back from 3S Chemical. I am working on the car with the shop and putting hands on each element of the process (I’m a “built not bought” kind of guy). Not a project for the weak of hear, but only to the brave go the spoils! I hope you have the opportunity to see this car when it is complete at the Amelia, or a Porsche Parade, the Greenwich or the Audrain some day soon, as we intend to show it for the first year after its restoration is complete - and thereafter, will drive the piss out of it, along side my 74 Mexico Blue Carrera Coupe! All the best.

Glad it’s mine…nearly complete with the metal work and will be back in its factory original lime green paint before too long!

It is an original, Porsche verified, factory lime green (Code No. 137) 74 Carrera Targa. One of only 137 made, and this one, originally optioned with a russet interior, is a 1 of 1 car - a big reason for our project, restoring it to concourse quality.

@@christopherminks6607 Typo...one of only 248 made, 1 of 11 Carrera Targa in Lime Green (code 137) and 1 of 1 due to its original Russet Red interior option

Wow. It must be depressing to get it back in this condition. It would almost be less expensive just to buy a different one.

LOL…harsh. But this is an early Porsche verified 1 of 1 factory lime green US market numbers matching 74 Carrera Targa. Rarest of the rare, and is currently undergoing a concourse restoration. Thanks for viewing!
