I once had a teacher who smoked one cigar every lesson, I had to sit in front . After finishing his cigar , he did not let it die in the ashtray he was stomping it in the ashtray, the cigar disintegrated and started to smoke and stink. During a break in lessons I removed his buds and ash, put ammonium dichrome in the ashtray, cover it with the ash, placed the buds back and took off. The next lesson of him I was sitting right in front of a nice volcano at the end of the hour. He suspected me, but had no evidence. LOL.

Having worked in the paint industry, my heart drops whenever I see undissolved (di)chromates. Call me an idiot for not being a chemist, but I never liked working with such heinous chemicals. This experiment reminds me of an interesting article I read a few years ago. Somebody proposed creating a usable atmosphere and lots of liquid water on Mars by nuking the surface to ignite the chromates which supposedly make of big portions of the sand. Now I see why the author concluded that it's a crazy idea.
@Sevendogtags8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was a few years ago, if you're talking about Elon Musk. He didn't want to nuke the surface, he wanted to blow multiple nukes at each pole of Mars, like tiny pulsating suns. It'll warm up the planet and melt the frozen carbon diooxide, CO2. A green house gas... It'll keep the planet warm etc etc... you get the point!
@rippspeck8 жыл бұрын
I've only ever heard of Elon Musk from hearsay, never read anything by him or heard him talk. What you're saying sounds way more thought out than what I was reading about. Anyway, it's a very interesting idea and knowing he's the kind of guy who gets big projects going, I can't wait to know if anything like this would actually work out. Who knows, terraforming takes a long time, at least if you want to keep the costs low. Him and his associates might start sooner rather than later.
@Sevendogtags8 жыл бұрын
rippspeck Yeah, It's very exciting and I really hope it would happen in our lifetime. Imagine just casualy planning a trip to a terraformed Mars... ha! That's just too good! ^^

It's really nice that the reaction generates just the right temperatures to have the same color as an active liquid type volcano. Interestingly, that means the temperature is the same as the lava in those volcanoes.
@11austin31009 жыл бұрын
+Adrien Perié i'm no chemist but i'm sure the containers used in this video would not withstand magma like temperatures.
@adrienperie61199 жыл бұрын
11austin3100 magma and lava are two different things, but lava is around 1200 to 1300°c, and this reaction produces similar heats which you can see from the color of it. The reaction itself is that hot, but not the whole thing, of course, as it quickly cools down through the air. Yes it can withstand the reaction as seen in the video, window glass melts at 600 °C, so if the whole thing was that hot it would melt, however here there isn't nearly enough energy to bring any large part of the jar to that temperature. The reaction products also insulate the reaction front from the glass.

It is actually hexavalent chromium -- precisely the form contained in bichromates and in CrO₃ -- that is carcinogenic, isn't it? @P9E8wcbpN6Q9 жыл бұрын
deaftodd there's a much better one i know of, you have to get high concentration peroxide (about 30%) from a beauty parlor and some yeast from a grocery store or some potassium iodide from a chemical market. so you put the 30% peroxide in the bottle, dissolve potassium iodide if your using it, add food dye and put soap inside the peroxide bottle, then pour it in! the yeast method you just have to put soap in the peroxide bottle and then dump in the packet of yeast. i wish your son good luck at his volcano show and tell =)

Or is it too heavy and never flies off with the vapor? (Vaping temperature is around 250 °C - 300 °C)
