100% one of the best instructional videos I’ve seen on KZbin. Very well put together and I appreciate the fact that everything didn’t work out the first time because more times than not that’s how real jobs go.

This is the only video anyone needs for how to strip a deck. The people getting their information from Facebook groups run by guys trying to sell their chemicals or stain are so mislead.

Nice video. Couple of quick things. Hydroxide isn't always the main ingredient. Sodium metasilicate is a big one. Potassium hydroxide is another which is great for water based stains. Same with butyl addatives.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been searching forever. I have one section of deck that I stained with a waterbased stain it failed and I am grateful I do not have to strip the whole deck. I am using the sherwin williams products that you mentioned. I did not know if I had to keep the house walls (wood) covered when using the brightner. You answered that question. I will be covering all the walls upper and lower. Thanks again.

Such an excellent and detailed video of the process. Thank you! Couple of comments. You mentioned you will use Superdeck Canyon Brown oil based stain. I thought you need to treat hardwood with hardwood stain, or it’s okay in this case. Some manufacturers (i. e. Armstrong Clark ) explicitly state that for hardwood you need to use a special stain. Hardwood definitely rots. I’m dealing with this issue myself. The previous owner had planters with drip line in each corner and due to a poor design the boards under the planters were kept moist all the time. Needless to say that the damage is significant. I’m going to flip these boards to get a couple of more years of it.
@advicefromayoungtradesmant24823 жыл бұрын
Great question about hardwood stains - there are hardwood specific ones that work great like Armstrong Clark's. That's actually my preferred one. However, most other penetrating oils will work on hardwoods, you just may have to wipe off excess depending on the manufacturer. It's never a bad idea to use a hardwood specific one but it's by no means a necessity!

Test a small area for absorption first, but I'd thin it down 10 to 15% on hardwood

If u can plz reply I’m doing my deck now.. I do all the construction I’m a stay at home mom and my husband works… he replaced (he does the hard stuff for me still lol) a few deck boards… so some of the wood is bare and some is needing strip… can I put stripper on the replaced boards or do I have to go around them or pull them uo
@advicefromayoungtradesmant2482 Жыл бұрын
You can use the same stripper/brightener application on the new boards. They won't look the same since they're new but you can't really change that.
@VivaLasVegusNervana2 жыл бұрын
If you mixed the powdered concentrate in a low volume of water, could you also make it into a gel-like more viscous stripper?
@advicefromayoungtradesmant24822 жыл бұрын
I think it would make a paste that might work on a very small scale, but that SW stripper for sure has other ingredients that give it the gel consistency.

So It's ok to wait till the next day to use the brightner?
@advicefromayoungtradesmant24822 жыл бұрын
I used to think it had to be immediately after but I no longer believe that it's a necessity. In a perfect world, yes, but it's not the end of the world if it happens the next day.
