I'm planning on doing this same project next spring/summer with the deck on this home I bought a year ago. Thanks so much for the info, I now have a much better understanding of the process involved, and it is pretty much what my original plan was. Take the long road and enjoy the results for many years to come, that is how I have always approached projects like this. Fast and easy can give you great results, like paint, but usually end up being way more work in the end. Don't *EVER* paint your deck. Great advice.

@steve88032 жыл бұрын
Just scuff all the flaking paint off with a deck broom. Blow the debris off with a leaf blower. Then apply a solid stain. Easy peasy. Done. No matter how much prep you put in, you're still going to have to do it again a year or two later. No point in wasting your time doing anything more.
@scottperry73113 жыл бұрын
I use the same sealer/stain for my deck, but it takes me about 8 hours to seal it, about 400 sq feet. I do it slow, i get the stain in between the boards and the ends. I double and triple stain knots or cracks in the wood. The sealer/stain from Bear is supposed to last 6 to 8 years, I live in South Florida so that is a big negative, it lasts good for about two then I reseal, any longer than 2 years and I risk rot setting in. I just replaced the old wood deck which I had, it had been on the house for 23 years and was in very good shape, only one rotted board. but the under boards and roof below I could not get to and know they had some rot, and when it was ripped up I was right, but not as bad as I had thought, I could have probably gotten another 5 years out of the deck but no more. The contractor was amazed at the condition of the deck since all the similar decks on the houses in my neighborhood were in really bad condition. That was because no one here maintains their decks, so they fall apart. I cannot emphasis enough that with a wood deck you have to maintain it constantly. My Deck is Yellow pine, so I watch it like a hawk. Any gap any possible rot I fill as soon as I can. I go over the deck every year just to check. I do not strip the old stain/sealant off the deck before resealing and this causes me no problems whatsoever. I used to strip the old stain, then sand and then pressure wash the deck lightly, but the pressure washing causes damage to the deck, so only pressure wash at a low setting or you will damage the wood. Like I said I dont have problems with putting stain on old stain, it just makes it darker but I have had no other problems from doing that at all.
@edseventyeight6749 Жыл бұрын
Your deck looks great! I used the same stain on our pergola five years ago. I had to go over it again this year because of some mildew I had to power wash off and sun fading but it was easy and looks great.

We are in the middle of refinishing our 150 SF deck. Unfortunately the previous owners painted over existing stain that matches the screened in porch. We were planning to paint over again, but had to remove most of the peeling paint with a hand disk-sander that staining seemed possible. The paint I intended to use (Behr Advanced Deck Over Paint) has horrible reviews and their previous version was the subject of a Class Action Lawsuit! I don't want to do all this prep work again in a few years when the paint fails. I came across your video and it reaffirms my belief that stain is better than paint in the long run. Fortunately the sanding was enough so no chemical stripper needed, which I hate. Thank you for this informative video! Keep Crushing It!

First, I'd like to thank you much for the informative video. I also want to let you know something extremely important. I love that your son was such a great help with pressure spraying the deck down. I was dreading watching him because my uncle, who is 6'5" and all of 350+ lbs. Was using his pressure sprayer and somehow it slipped and the pressure ate the skin off of his palm. I would suggest a couple things for safety. Gloves are very important, as are goggles in case debris flies up into his face. He is closer to the ground so particles could fly into his face easier than to an adult. Lastly, i would suggest he wears pants and a long sleeve T-shirt just as another protection to his skin. I am not trying to tell you what to do. As a Healthcare professional, I just wanted to give advice. I'd hate to see the wonderful young man seriously injured. Again, I appreciate the video.

I found the Behr semi-transparent weather proofing wood stain & sealer at home depot. It says on the bottle it is 100% Acrylic, which is not stain but similar to latex paint if I am not wrong. I am wondering how the deck looks now although it is still less than their 6-year guarantee. I saw online people recommend to use oil-based stain for deck, which is much easier to restain. Is that the same case using Acrylic?

I found out the hard way - don't paint decks to start with. Looked great the first few months, then it all went to heck and I've been slowly getting rid of it ever since. Sanding didn't take it off. Pressure washing got the worst of it off. Chemical stripping was a mess. Finally coughed up the bucks and had a team of deck guys come in and get the rest of it off by whatever means they chose to use. Finally have a deck worth looking at.
@the_crushlife4 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain my brother. But when you sit out there and enjoy a good meal or a cold beer, all the work and $$ is worth it. Depending on where you live, just stain once/year or every other year when it loses color and protection. A brush on a broom stick or a roller, quick, easy job.
@DoubleDogDare544 жыл бұрын
@@the_crushlife I do it once a year with clear oil. Just pressure washed it good yesterday to clean it off, the weather is hot and dry today, I'll probably oil it tomorrow as the sun is baking it dry right now. And yep, a steak and a cold one on the deck makes it all worthwhile!

I watched video after video and couldn’t decide how to do this best. Never worked with wood before but for some reason I kept saying, “why the hell would someone paint a deck.” I came across your video and I felt like we had the same thought process so I went for it. Definitely time consuming but works well. I logged back in and subscribed. I have a small circular sander and it seemed to work but I was worried about the wood. I’m going to stick with your approach. Stripper works well if I give it that 15 minutes because it is able to soak. Nervous about the ballasters. They run vertical so I’m not sure it will work. Did you use it on yours? How did it go with that section or did you only do the floorboards? Either way thanks again. Plus pretty cool that you included the kids for a team effort. Net M, all depends on how many hours you want to put in! For any of these products, I would say don't let it sit very long, just a few minutes. Better to do a second coat and scrape than let it dry. 140 sq. ft. should be a couple days' worth of work. Then just hose off, let dry and stain! Hope it turns out well brother.
