Zinc and sulfur react when heated. Zinc sulfide, a luminescent compound, is formed.

Wow; I was going to do this experiment indoors, you just changed my mind. I knew the reaction was exothermic but before trying i wanted to actually see the reaction. So big thank you!

Why is the reaction so strong?

Thanks for upload. Nice clear view of violence of reaction. So after i do it as it looks cool i will use a cover to card board box to contain product from flying every where. So my paints talle europium do not react with alpha emitters. Supposedly reaction had to be doped with silver to vet it to react with radiation like in a spinthacope.Have you done this? Any suggestion as to. Using silver wire or silver coin scrappings?

I am having trouble with making an energetic reaction. I am using 4g of zinc to 1g of sulphur and the reaction is very slow and sometimes intermittent. I keep my powders in a ziplock container with desiccant and the humidity is around 25%, do you think it could still be too high? thanks a million man.

DroneXFun use 6 zinc to 1 sulphur ratio

3:1ratio worked best 4 me

I am trying to find an iron rod that is thin and contains the proper components. I used a ring stand rod, and didn't get the same effect. Maybe just wasn't hot enough? Unfortunately, shopping online has a lot of "soft iron rods" or steel or whatever (because iron and oxygen are just so frisky together) but I'd like to know where I should be looking OR what words I should type in to yield a more fruitful search.

A deflagration spoon works much better if you have one available.

is it powdered zinc too?

Yes

People who are allergic to sulfur or its compounds, or who have asthma, as well as pregnant women, should not be around when this experiment is performed.

You should also mention that this produces H2S (Hidrogen Sulfide) wich is an EXTREMELY TOXIC gas that has the unfortunate effect of narcotizing your nose, so you won't be able to tell after certain concentration in the air if there is or there isn't gas in the room (wich most of the times leads to faint, then death). This gas is almost as toxic as HCN (hidrogen cyanide), so don't omit this.

Can you explain me where the S gets the H2 ?

Wrong. It does not produce hydrogen sulfide. There will just be some sulfur(IV) oxide from the burning sulfur. Also, hydrogen sulfide is not _almost as_ poisonous as hydrogen cyanide - it's *even more* poisonous.

huh.

Bad video, for you did not include _any_ security advice. It is a very violent reaction, the fumes should be in no way be allowed inside a room, it produces poisonous H₂S … _Come on!_ Put up something that at least says to not try this at home!
