Ok, doing it again with 3 colors would be fantastic! But instead of three single colors, do one layer pink and yellow, the next yellow and blue, and the top blue and pink. That could be cool!

Very interesting. I hated the look of mustard yellow, but you were correct- it’s the only surviving yellow in the end. Good call. Idea: Do this one in a jar, with combed top. But I’d have 3 or 6 chunks of top, so there could be layers.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
Ooooo!!!! I love the combed top idea
@janatherton9194 Жыл бұрын
Yes, especially if one of the sections of combed top was a grey, or a humbug fibre and one white, you would be able to see how differently the colours take on the different fibres.

I have loved dyeing with just 3 colors for years. I leave the combed yarn in a bowl overnight and then heat everything with vinegar to fix it and then always wait excitedly for the result. I have never done this with finished yarn, but I have 1000 grams of my own spun Rambouillet waiting to be dyed and I will dye it with rust, turquoise and purple and let it become 100 colors overnight and I am already looking forward to it! Thank you for inspiring me! 💛🧡💜🌻

That turned out so pretty! I do so love the idea of a rainbow set, I'd probably have considered another layer after treating the layer before with extra yellow on the bottom then a bit of pink on the top, aiming for the whole rainbow! Or do a taller lasagna and just repeat the same colours? Yeah like the minisskeins you did before, yeah yeah yeah!!!

I was a little worried that using 3 primaries and the honey mustard would make the colours a little muddy, but I love how the colours turned out, especially the middle layer, I loved how there was a bit of everything in there! I think the yarns would be gorgeous for weaving, where you would get further blending and layering of the colours.

Absolutely fantastic, fairy-tale colors.Technical suggestion. Text at the bottom of the video with information on how much time you "cook" or put in hot water.
@ChemKnitsTutorials8 ай бұрын
I usually try to include all of that information in the video description with time stamps so you can jump to the relevant portion of the video. Typically I cook for 30 minutes unless I'm doing something unusual or the dyes are stubborn. (I always try to say how long I cook things for, but sometimes I definitely miss it if I'm doing multiple videos in one day!)

I would have been worried about mud if I hadn't looked at the thumbnail first, but these turned out absolutely stunning! I'd be interested in two versions of a three-color approach: One with a single color on each layer, one with two colors (so, say, pink and blue, blue and yellow, yellow and pink). But probably the most interesting comparison there would be how they behave as a fade. Maybe one of these days you could collab with a machine knitter to get quick results on the old "But how do these look when worked up?" question!

I would like to see this done again with 1 TBL spoon added to the water in between layers.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you mean adding acid between layers? This would mean that there would be acid in the yarn that I layered on top of the previous layer, so it would be similar to just starting out with acid (although the first layer would get more coverage) This is something i could try, but I know from experience that it is harder to spread powders very far if I've added acid first.

Gorgeous colors! What would happen if you didnt squish the dye in and just let the sprinkles spread on their own? Either with citric acid mixed with dye or adding vinegar at the end and let things sit for hours.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I think without squishing they wouldn't mix very much, but it's hard to know for sure
@kimcongdon3652 Жыл бұрын
I really want to see how this would work if you alternated the direction of the yarn and dye placement. So the first layer is along the length of the pan for the yarn, and the dye is across the width, and then with layer two switch that and run the yarn width-wise and the dye length-wise.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
Ooo this is an intersting idea!

So the lasagna guess last night was really someone just channeling the prediction for the next dyepot weekly! Based on the fact that the bottom layer seems to have the biggest patches of unmixed color, I'm curious about whether it's a feature of the color or the placement. Does the pink just read as "pink" even when mixed a little bit while yellow is more obviously adjusted? I would love to see a primary mix yarn lasagna with yellow as the first layer.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I think that the pinks can strike faster and transfer less, or else maybe I just used a lot more of them? I'm not sure.
@BlueLotusLife Жыл бұрын
I think it really made a difference that you used the worsted instead of DK or fingering.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I think worsted vs sock would make a difference, but worsted vs DK would be super similar with surface area. (I think worsted is 220 yards, and DK is 246 maybe?)
@janechorlton5015 Жыл бұрын
I wonder what would happen if you had a dye powder and citric acid mix on some of the layers...or one of them. It would be interesting how it would influence the spread and appearance of the colours.
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I think that would limit the spread of a lot of colors - especially on superwash yarn. I find that some colors when I add with acid - even cold, will strike super super fast and not move very far from where they were initially placed. it depends on the pigments, though.

Gorgeous! How different do you think the yarn would look if you put them in a different order like yellow on bottom, pink in the middle and blue on top?
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I expect the yellow would still have been overrun, but it's hard to know exactly how it would turn out!
@JDiamondW1 Жыл бұрын
It shocks me how when it's laid out I can say 'I don't like that very much' but then when it's hanked up my opinion changes. I like it hanked up so much better. However, I'm not a huge fan of yellow but I love how the bright yellow mixed with the blue and made a green. The mustard yellow just made me cringe, even when it's finished that is my least favorite area on the hanks. Now in the video you talked about how the blue was on the bottom. Pink was the bottom and blue in the middle, which explains why blue traveled to the top layer and the bottom layer, it was in the middle after all. :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I cringed a bit at the mustard at first, too. I do like how it turned out in the end, but I wish maybe I had just stuck with the single yellow. Maybe next time! I think that seeing yarn hanked up can change my opinion sometimes because it looks more like it might look when things are knit - you see the colors mixed up a bit more.
