Chemoreceptors in the aortic arch, the carotid bifurcation and the brainstem send information about the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide and the pH of the blood (and therefore of the tissues of the body) to the respiratory centres in the brainstem. The respiratory centres regulate the movements of the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles and accessory muscles of ventilation to drive inspiration and expiration. The chemoreceptor reflex describes how changes to the composition of the blood lead to changes in ventilation.
