One of the greatest forehands in TT, period. It's a shame he never fulfilled his true potential. At his best he could beat anyone easily. He and Xu Xin kinda fall into the same boat. Super talented lefties with incredible forehands who just stop shy of their true potential.

Irfan Khalis The two players you mention have the same problem when it comes to their backhand(Not bad,but not good enough comping to ZJK,ML and FZD),even one of the Chinese coaches 吳敬平((The coach (the one who wears glasses)of Ma Lin,Wang Hao and the initial coach of Chen Qi(Chen Qi is shifted to another sub-internal team before 2008,coached by 肖戰,who coaches ZJK before 2016 )) say his biggest regret in his coaching career is not Ma Lin failing to win WC,not Wang Hao failing to win OC,but is Chen Qi failing to achieve what he can and what he should improve.

Actually,there is a story behind that shifting associated with coaches,I can tell if you want to know.
@Irfan87

Yes you're right. Their trouble is consistency. Because both of them have shown that they can pull off incredible shots with their backhands, but they don't do it consistently enough. Chen Qi had a great counterspin backhand block and Xu Xin has pulled off some crazy RPB, but their reluctance to use them more often has affected them.

Yes please tell me. Ive read a bit about it, but never got the details. Why did the coaches change?

Ok,the story actually consists of two parts,which is not really related to the recent scenario of team China.Regarding the career of Chen Qi,there is a documentary in China in 2013,and I am going to translate it. The China table tennis team usually holds a internal shifting after a Olympic circle(one time per four year).Back to 2006,Liu Guoliang was the head coach,and there were three sub-head coaches in the male team,each of them coached a few specific players.吳敬平(the one wearing glasses) coached Ma Lin,Wang Hao and Chen Qi,肖戰(the current head coach of the female team) coached ZJK and 秦志㦸(The current head coach of China male table tennis team) coached Wang Liqin…… According to the documentary,with a view to having another success in Beijing 2008,the team held a shifting in the 'combination',they came up with three out of the top four players at that time to be playing in the Olympic Game,including Ma Lin,Wang Hao,Wang Liqin and Chen Qi,four of them were competing for three positions in the stage at Beijing 2008.At the time,吳敬平coached three of the four,including Ma Lin,Wang Hao and Chen Qi,秦志戟coached Wang Liqin(the remaining one),but肖戰coached none of the them,giving rise to a problem in the work of balance.Therefore,Liu Guoliang asked吳敬平 to give one of the three players he coached,to 肖戰.吳敬平 had struggled a long period of time,and decided to 'give up' Chen Qi. "Chen Qi is very good at double game,he win a number of tournaments with Ma Lin in a row,but his backhand is not good enough,that's why I ask 肖戰 to focus on Chen' s backhand training when Chen starts being coached by 肖戰"said 吳敬平in the documentary.However,Chen Qi didn't improve his backhand techniques the coaching of 肖戰,"It is a pity that Ma Lin doesn't win the world championship in Men's single game and Wang Hao doesn't win the champion in Men' single game in Olympic Game,but the biggest regret in my coaching career is Chen Qi,I didn't keep coaching him in his whole career,Chen is talented,but his backhand leaves much to be desired.There is a period that Chen is fiercely good at his backhand before the shifting,but his improvement stops and finally reaches a standstill.That's what I regret very much"said 吳敬平 "Chen is a talented boy,but he fails to achieve what he can and to win what he should win"said 吳敬平with a expression of disappointment in face. Ps:This is part of the story

'cause being a lefty he never plays forehand to forehand rallies against him.Against left-handers like Boll and Maze his rally skills didn't seem that overwhelming.

He was better known for his doubles play. His "whip motion" forehand drive was at the time a prototype for many young and coming players in Chinese table tennis.

Chen Qi's dorehand is such a pleasure to watch. You can really see how his whole body movent is so fluent and so ergonomicly efficient. And also very important his momentent of ball xontact is just right. Not o early and not to late its just perfect. The result of this is again a pleasure to watch. Its a perfectly flying ball, not too much curve but a ton of spin how it can only be produced by the Chinese super hard but supertacky rubbers. Many people consider him to have the best overall forehand topspin. And I think they are right.

I liked watching Chen very much back then but he went off the scene a lot sooner than I expected. Inconsistent backhand ? No wonder Xu Xin finally got to No. 1 after he greatly improved his RPB. He and Chen Qi are the dream partners for doubles, now and then, no doubt. Should Chen did the same for his BH, his ranking would be very different. However, Chen's coaching these days is no bad at all. Best luck to him.

No.although they’re both lefties,lin is mostly use his backhand’s incredible speed to attack the opponent while chen ji use his forehand too attack mainly.he is basically old version of xu xin though one uses shakehand and one use penhold.
