I just love the big grin Mr. Welk always has on his face when he dances. Pure joy! Sadly this is something my generation has lost. They have traded real joy and fun for staring at a screen with a blank dead look on their face. And when they do "dance" it's not really.

I loved playing bass in polka bands and watching a packed floor of couples dancing, especially those that were really good. Sometimes a few of the seasoned couples would do what I called a perimeter dance. A man and woman would do these short steps with their arms locked, side by side, and skip around the outside perimeter of the dance floor with beaming smiles, glad that their dance lessons paid off. When lower priced wedding DJs started to replace live bands, dancing became scores of women racing to the dance floor, beer in one hand, a smoke inbthe other, sliding on their nylons the instant Cotton Eyed Joe was played. When Macarena became popular, dancing became extinct, then weddings followed.

I have heard this number played all my life and never knew it was called the "clarinet polka". I have never heard it played on a clarinet before either. Maybe the word "clarinet" in this case translates to something else. Anybody know?

"The Clarinet Polka" is definitely the correct title. Check out Mary Schneider's yodeling version. It blows away this one.
@CaiasCrimefood8 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry...but "The Clarinet Polka" isn't the correct name! It's "Klarinettenmuckl". And hell, Mary Schneider???? I'm a mix of Bavarian, Austria and South Tyrol...I will die, when I've to hear Mary Schneider. That's no yodeling culture...you never heard a real bavarian or austrian Jodler with its mystical spirit.

Come on...give it a break...its about tuba, not yodelling. Talent is TALENT. Too much dumbing down in public stool now days...Heck I yodel when I eat habaneros during expulsion of one of obama's kinfolk... Now if you'll excuse me whilst I entertain my new girl friend who is an auctioneer that can yodel, AND suck start a Harley...SIMULTANEOUSLY!!!! You who like to throw off on stuff you won't ever be able to do need to just go bungee jump with a tow rope off the highway bridges in front of a semi!!!

For an accordion like that, can you play it the same as a piano?
@ondaride7779 жыл бұрын
No only right-handed keyboard is like piano, left-handed keyboard consists of 2 rows of bass notes and 4 rows of chord buttons. 3-major, 4-minor, 5-sept, 6-diminished-sept
@rinkokonoe86449 жыл бұрын
oh wow thats pretty cool thanks
@texdak8 жыл бұрын
No. Even though the right hand side is the namesake for a "piano accordion", the key phrasing has to cater for a continuous rather than a percussive tone, so it is more akin to a harmonium or organ (the Swiss even call it "Handorgel"). However, it has a very direct manually controlled air supply also involved in phrasing, and it has a left hand side providing basic basses and complete chords using complex mechanics. In ensemble play, the left hand side is almost never used except for bellows control so that the melody side can make use of full bellows phrasing without compromising with the air supply needs of the left and the accompaniment is not limited to the restricted possibilities of the accordion. Chromatic button accordions match the physical frame and tone production of this instrument type better, leading to greater technical possibilities, a more compact size, and a much extended range as compared to piano accordions. Piano accordions may seem to give you a headstart by providing a "familiar" keyboard, but learning good bellow control, phrasing, and compelling play for either instrument type take so long (as compared to merely producing the "right" notes) that this headstart is a bit meaningless unless it makes the difference between sticking with the instrument or quitting. The narrative is that an accordion is a simplistic portable keyboard which piano players can easily learn for more mobile performance but that is seriously underestimating potential and complexity of the instrument.

@Tayrulz18 жыл бұрын
+Rusty Wolfe I am just saying in general. Since Richard was playing, I just complimented on him and that his wife has a great husband that loves her and she has her talents. I knew that that was Cissy dancing and not Mary Lou.
@Rusty36598 жыл бұрын
+taylor laski Lawrence Welk always did have more talent then he could ever showcase in a weekly hour. Mary Lou Metzger is a perfect example of that. She was in the trio with Gale Farrell and Sandi Griffiths and was always dancing with Jack Immel. But she could've just as easily stepped in and became Bobby Burgess' new dance partner when Cissy King got fired. Gale Farrell''s another example. Nobody could beat Jo Ann Castle's piano playing. But Gale Farrell could give her a run for her money. But because Lawrence Welk had so many talented people, she very rarely got the chance to play.
