When I was young, my parents had a Lawrence Welk club of about 6 couples. Every Saturday Night they would gather at one of their houses, have a big pot luck dinner--and then everything stopped for one hour as they all watched the show. During the commercials they would share Welk trivia. They are all gone now, but those were happy times. I am glad I was able to witness them.

I remember as a kid every Sunday the family would go to my grandparents house across the street and we would watch Lawrence Welk. This was the typical type of different musical acts he would show. I miss those Sunday nights with all the family, great music and good times, Castle and Floren were my favorite. 😃👍

52 years later. The polka is still good. Some of us young folk don't like the rap music. Prefer this any day of the week

Great vid. Thanks for posting. Boots Randolph once said that every time he played "Yackety Sax" it almost killed him. I would imagine that this tuba player would almost feel the same way after so long, especially playing that fast.

Joanne is so talented. Great on piano or accordion. Can sing as well. She was superb in skits they did on the show.

@@Rbigraff - She really was. Floren was a great musician. But Jo Ann was just in a class by herself. At one point, Floren went to Mr. Welk and said... "You need to decide who's going to be the accordion player on this show." and from that point he featured Castle mostly on piano.

Because they can’t. Find me a bass player who can play string bass, electric bass, and tuba equally well. Find me guitar players who can also play banjo or electric mandolin or steel guitar. Find me woodwind players who can double on flute or clarinet without treating it like another saxophone. Find me accordion players who can play that accurately that fast. Find me a tenor singer who can sing as majestically as Joe Feeny. Find me a tap dancer like Arthur Duncan. Find me a guy who can sing, dance, tap, and play percussion like Jack Imel did. People just can’t do all that shit anymore. That’s what it is.

The tuba has Holton-style valve caps but could also be a Lyon & Healy "Own Make", which was made in Chicago, IL, as was the Holton Model 98 Mammoth Bass in BBb (1917-1918). I suspect there was some interaction between the two companies, as L&H sold their equipment to Holton in 1928. If I understand it correctly, "Mammoth" was used for large BBb bases, while "Monster" designated large Eb basses.

That tuba is either silver or nickel. Once you start polishing it. It will turn black in days. I have a silver bari sax and I spoke with a jeweler about polishing it, his recommendation was to leave it alone, BTW my sax is a copy write 1917, American made.

Look at Jo Ann Castle's face.. you can see the start of her alcoholism is just beginning to take it's toll... she really had to pile on the makeup to try and hide it, but, didn't really work too well. It's a shame she let booze run her life for so long.. hope she's booze-free at this point in her life.
