They are two very different conception of flutes, the chinese Xari works like blowing inside a glass bottle, unlike the Recorder but, in my opinion, they are pleasant played together, even if differently timbrically. One thing is certain, that they are 2 great virtuosos. Bravo also the guitarist.

this piece just shows how culture in eastern asia is construed in such a confusing and maybe exciting way of hybridization. in the video, the music is titled in chinese "又見炊煙", but I recognize the japanese element, pentatonic, so I do a little research, it turns out that, the title came from Taiwan, and the composer was attributed to a Taiwanese lyricist Tsuan-nu, who, at a time when Japanese music was prohibited in Taiwan, borrowed, or plagiarized, or appropriated, you name it, the melody from a Japanese folksong by Kainuma Minoru and gave it to the famed Taiwanese singstress Teresa Teng to record in her album which became famous in the global Mandarin areas, including China, where Teng is a music icon when popualr music is prohibited and Teng's music was trafficked through homeward bound overseas Chinese. And as the flutist in this video Chenyue is from China, she probably knows the tune from Teng's record, hence the title, instead of the original Japanese one, which is actually a pity, that to such confusion is given rise, since it could lead to some copyright and attribution problems. an interesting story to tell though both culturally and historically, since Taiwan, China and Japan has such intricate, sensitive relationship in the past and even now.

It's a Xiao, a bamboo flute played vertically as opposed to the DiZi which is a bamboo flute played horizontally, they are chinese musical instruments, another of them is the hulusi !!!

I know this melody because of the Teresa Teng （邓丽君） pop song from back in the day: 又见炊烟 which was sung in Mandarin. I didn't know this was originally a Japanese tune.
