I dedicated this song to my guy bestfriend back in the day. I never saw him as anything else, just my bestfriend. He was always there for me when I needed him and I don’t know when it started, but something just clicked and we started dating. When he told me he likes me, I just had that feeling that I think I was starting like him, too. We were together for years and when we want to let each other know that we’re telling the whole damn truth, we’d always add “Oath” to it. It became our thing and it was all because of this song, “this is my oath to you.” For example, I wanted to assure him I will always love him, I’ll add Oath so he’ll know I meant it and I’m not lying. “I will always love you. Oath.” it was our sacred thing. Or atleast to me it was. I believed every oath he made. But then I guess everything is always only good in the beginning, because I learned that almost every oath he made were lies. “I’m not having an affair, oath.” “I won’t ever break your heart, oath.” “I am not seeing another girl, oath.” Our once sacred thing, the one word I held on to, the one assurance I know for sure he wouldn’t defile, became meaningless. It just became a word he would use to manipulate and deceive me into thinking he was being sincere, when he wasn’t. The oath became a curse and I was left resenting the word. Hearing the song again brings back memories, but they’re no longer painful. I’ve made my peace with my past. He was my great love, but also my greatest heartbreak.
