The Deluge (or Potop) is very specific and one of the most saddest periods in the Polish history. In the middle of the 17th century, the then hegemon of Eastern Europe was invaded by almost all its neighbours (Ukrainian Cossacks, Russian Tsardom, Swedish Empire, Brandenburg-Prussia and Transylvania). This video will show the whole chronology of this period on the map (every day).
This all started in 1648 year when Cossacks, ruled by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, led a rebellion in the Polish Ukraine and even took Kiev. In 1654 Russia openly supported the uprising and attacked Polish-Lithuanian Commowealth (Rzeczpospolita) on the whole front. In 1655 Sweden after Russian successes in the war invaded Poland and began the main phase of the Deluge. Second Northern War began. Warsaw was occupied, Danzig was in a siege. Brandenburg-Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, Transylvania, Denmark and Netherlands also took part in this conflict. In 1660 after the treaty with Sweden, Poland and Russia fought one-on-one. The Truce of Andrusovo finally ended the Thirteen Years' War between them in 1667. After all that happened Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth didn't recover and weakened more and more. In 1795 Poland definitively losed the independence.
Besides wiki (in English, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian languages) I also used sources such as:
Polish archives for the Khmelnytsky Uprising (Dokument ob osvobodytelnoi voine ukraynskoho naroda 1648-1654)
Runivers for Polish-Russian and Russo-Swedish wars
Local Polish sites for the Swedish Deluge and Transylvanian invasion

This is just crazy. I've never realised how complex this conflict was. In polish school they only teach us that yeah, Sweden came, beat our asses painfully and that is it. In fact it was so much more than that. It also makes much more senes why Poland was so weak after the deluge.

I'm reading the Deluge right now and seeing just how Sweden was able to pick apart Poland the way they did. I'm only a few hundred pages in, but the 'Battle' of Uistye and Feast at Keydany show just how great the game was stacked against Poland and Lithuania through their own mistakes.

There were a couple occasions when the khans tried to prevent it by closing bonds with the Commonwealth. I've heard that, one of the main reasons for the Swedish invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the fear of Russian expansion - especially against the coasts of the Baltic sea. At first, Charles X actually contemplated joining the Polish-Lithuanian side, however, that was deemed too risky; instead, an invasion of the Commonwealth was launched, to take a piece of the "cake" by securing the coastline. As anyone can figure out from watching a map of the "Swedish Empire", it relied heavily on the Baltic sea - the Swedes understood well enough, that, if the Commonwealth would collapse and Russia reach its coast, Sweden could be next in line.
@andrejsokolov9431
@andrejsokolov9431 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Sweden is always on the defensive. Why did they then intervene in the Russian-Polish conflict 50 years before the "Swedish Deluge"? Why did they get involved in the internal German conflict during the Thirty Years War? The essence of the conflict between Moscow and Warsaw or the North and South of Germany is clear: "Who is the head in the Slavic / German world and who will lead the Christian army to the liberation of Constantinople." And Sweden wages war for despicable money, not for honor.
@Leaffordes

Incredible work! It is a real pity that Poland did not manage to reach a satisfactory agreement with Cossacks in the initial stage of the conflict. Polish Senate was in fact initially eager to change a formula upon which the Commonwealth was build, from a two-country state to a three-country state (Poland, Lithuania and Rhutenia). But atrocities commited by both sides quickly destroyed any chance for peace. Whats ironic, the most bloodthirsty of Polish magnates in Ukraine - Jeremi Wiśniowiecki - is remebered as a hero of this war and his sensless ferocity is largely forgotten.

@Naxir Not sure who you call a Russian troll, but if it is me, then know, that I am Polish and my sentiment toward Chmielnicki's Uprising was shaped by Paweł Jasienica. I agree that Wiśniowiecki acted with usual methods of the time, but only if Cossacks were rebels. Cossacks were free people, aspiring to get noble status, and armed fight for rights was not really illegal for nobles in Commonwealth back then. Moreover, Chmielnicki wrote letters to the King declaring his allegiance to him and his will to end the struggle as soon as justice is served. And Polish Senate viewed it not as a rebellion either. Wiśniowiecki's actions were wrong (he even murdered envoys!), because they angered Cossacks beyond limit and they no longer wanted any peace, so Chmielnicki became hostage of this anger and could not proceed as he had planned.

the quality of the video is at the highest level, but there were several historical moments. In 1656, after the conclusion of peace between Poland and Muscovy, Bohdan Khmelnytsky broke the alliance treaty. And also the fact that after Ivan Vyhovskyi came to power, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was formed, a state of three nations (Poles, Lithuanians, Ukrainians). And the video is great

Basically Polish magnates got angry at the king because the King was trying to reform the country and bring more power into the hands of the Monarchy and less for magnates, it was only in 1792, too late, when reforms finally happened

EU player Poland: Nah I don't feel like it, you only have 33% of warscore, you need at least 90% of my territory occupied. EU player Russia: But but ... I'd have to declare war on the other guy Sweden just to occupy their pieces of poland to get enough warscore! EU player Poland: That's the way the game is played. EU Player Russia: Fine so be it! **Dows Sweden for pieces of occupied Poland** Every other EU player: Oh wow oh wow! Look how weak Poland is! I want a piece of that π **Dows Poland** Sweden and Russian: Well I'll be fucking damned if they get a piece of my π! I'll never get a peace settlement worth a damn if they occupy a slice!
