The most brilliant line in the series. All through the first and 2nd ep, people were asking “how does an RBMK reactor explode?” So finally in the end we learn the answer: Lies. It wrapped up the whole series. What a brilliantly done series this was. Jareds acting was spot on.

The reactor exploded because of communism. Its not the only terrible ideology. But it is one that is still sold to ignorant , impressionable semi adults as a viable option. Lies. Communism blew up that reactor because Communism causes poverty. An inviolate law of economics. Communism caused the explosion because the primary trade commodity that replaced income was appointing positions of power. Where rather than those most competent gaining positions of authority, it was those with the best political contacts that did. Because Socialism in any form breaks the feedback loop of effort->rewards->greater control over effort

Chad Solzhenitsyn : "You must understand. The leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse. The October Revolution was not what you call in America the "Russian Revolution." It was an invasion and conquest over the Russian people. More of my countrymen suffered horrific crimes at their bloodstained hands than any people or nation ever suffered in the entirety of human history. It cannot be understated. Bolshevism was the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant of this reality is proof that the global media itself is in the hands of the perpetrators."

It is an exceptional story made possible by an exceptional human experiment inflicted on people not by mad scientists, but by the human subjects of the experiment themselves. The communist system, that takes everything we know about human kind and flips it on its head, destroys every person and everything in its path: including even the planet itself. A system built on so many lies that they are too many to count and impossible to fix: the entire system imploded, as was its only possible outcome, from the very beginning.

@@svartvarg9778 You say that like it doesn't have a duty to represent the truth. People will watch it and believe it is a documentary. There was no reason to lie about what happened, to make the hero look like the villain and the villains look like heroes. The story was dramatic enough as it is. Of course it was. It was one of the most dramatic events in recent history. But they lied anyway. And if you don't find that unethical just because "it doesn't say it's a 100% true documentary" then you're a fool.

@@hello7032 While it's true he had a very harsh style of leadership and made some terrible decisions, Dyatlov was far from the moronic, incompetent bully you see in the show. In fact, he realized quite early that he had misjudged the situation. He then attempted (in vain) to revoke previous orders, limit the damage and locate missing personnel until severe radiation poisoning caught up with him. During and after the trial, while Dyatlov did lie to protect himself, he also steadfastly defended the engineers present on the day of the accident. The show is great overall, but when dealing with real people and events, there is a fine line between dramatization and outright misrepresentation. Not every story needs a mustache-twirling villain.

One of the most unfortunate things about this whole sequence is you know once Legasov basically called out that the Soviet system had some very severe flaws, and of course, the whole lying thing you know I think he knew that he had essentially just committed a form of suicide. The sad thing, though is the fact that this is not a new thing and unfortunately, it’s still exists. In China, even making an off-color joke can pretty much land you in a very similar situation. And trying to call out the flaws in the government system will likely result in you being sent to the Gobi desert or something.

Those 3 were key-figures in the Disaster yes, but as Legasov clearly states: Not even those highly-ranked executives were aware of the designflaw in RBMK-reactors with AZ5, and xenon-saturation! There was a report on it, from a similar RBMK-reactor in Kallingrad, which also reported a huge powersurge, under slightly less pressing circumstances: A clear indication that there was a dangerous design-error there... yet this report was held back by 'the Communist Party'... presumably the KGB? Because admitting such a dangerous flaw in their prestigious Nuclear Reactors, and having to make adjustments, would make the Communist Party look stupid and weak!

Yup exactly. In the next scene the head of KGB (who protects truth from getting out) questioned if he was lying by saying the other two weren’t involved in bringing out the truth. This must have been a rotten time and place to live in. But as you said, it describes these times. It is virtuous to some to call someone a liar rather than just disagree with them, or request hyperlinks for proof.

Sooner or later, that debt is paid" Such a good statement, and só fitting even, or especially in the world we live in today. (HBO's)Chernobyl is a masterclass-example of whát can go so devastatingly wrong, if too few people, hold too much influence and power, to the point they can just censor the truth, because it offend, and publish the sweet lies.

when something that's good goes on being good for too long, often the people making the good things happen forget the pain needed the make those good things, so when that pain comes back for them to deal with again, many will find it easier to ignore it rather than to keep their good thing going, even if it's being rotted away by the pain. The Soviets, russians, even different political parties of America being brought up in the comments, everyone lies to keep whats good if they think they can get away with it, just a fact of history at this point. Dunno what to do about it, but the fingers being pointed at every group is both funny and depressing to me

This thing about concealing certain truths doesn't sound overly uncommon - I mean, most businesses do the same thing in varying degrees. But the idea of state control restricting certain things doesn't sound too dissimilar to what's happening all over western democracies right now, with all sorts of bullshit restrictions about what we can and cannot say, or believe. So, now it's our turn..

Essentially they were on camera. Like a previous comment said it wasn’t the 20s, or even the 60s anymore. The USSR was trying to look appealing to the World and it was growing increasingly difficult and now a Nuclear reactor worse than 100x the nuclear bombs dropped in WW2 just exploded under their watch… Now imagine if everyone in the room gets shot before it cuts out. Do you honestly think the West would just let it slide this time? Hell no if the KGB couldn’t handle this situation (without murdering their staff) then the USSR was too unstable to be trusted with Nuclear Reactors. Yep WW3, thanks to incompetence for a test, and a following Trial.
