Lots of little things in most episodes are changed from dramatic effect. The side effects of massive radiation poisoning require a few hours to manifest this much for example. The last episode (WITHOUT going into details) takes a lot of liberties, but it doesn't change much of the basic facts, the important elements of what happened. You'll end up with a lot more knowledge of atomic power and radiation poisoning that you ever thought to have by the end. And you will weep. Many times. Good news--a lot of the people you met in this episode died. But a surprising number survived, at least for years and years afterewards. Like that guy who opened the huge lead door but did not go inside? He is still alive. He got soooooo sick. But eventually he recovered. IMHO this series portrays more genuine heroes than any war movie I've ever seen. BTW you have a very beautiful kitty. Also, keep in mind the Soviet Union was a brutal police state. Ten years hard labor for example meant living in Sibera in sub-zero temperatures with inadequate food, shelter, clothing, medicine, or tools--and your job each day is to cut down enough trees to burn to keep you alive at night. Because you had no access to coal or any other kind of heat than wood. The secret police were everywhere, and there were no civil liberties as we know them at all.

WOAH thank you for all of this info, knowledge and just the comment in general. I just finished editing episode 2 and was crying while editing. I've found so far that i've been so deeply horrified by the actions and mistakes that I've been too mad to cry. But I felt the shift start to happen in episode 2. I am somewhat comforted knowing that many people survived. And that many stepped into the moment to be heroes when leadership failed them. The Soviet Union was indeed very brutal. Easy to lose sight of that while watching from the comfort of my home in 2023, but it is important to remember the political setting this takes place in.

Besides fear it's all about truth and fake news imo, which also easily can be mirrored in todays political context around the globe; totalitarianism vs free democracy (free speech, journalism, science etc.) I also see a similarity with the debate on climate change, where the truth is twisted by those people and companies with big political and/or economical interests. True science was long time not listend to. At least that's my take on it and one way to look at this.

Yes, and the one guy they have depicting the scientist that tells the more junior staff to watch the broken panel as he goes out... that was a moment of no ego. He told them to watch a broken panel because they now had valid orders to stay in that room. He was trying to save their lives because they can't be ordered to the core unless someone higher ranking gets back before he does, and he's the only one who's been acting logical. He's trying to save their lives by giving them a meaningless task in a room far from the source of danger.

Ionized atmosphere is a symptom of acute radiation in the air. Ionized air has a taste, and I have been told that it tastes like copper, a metallic taste. That's why the guy asks, "Do you taste metal?"

I used to work at a University Clinic where they conducted tests on rats with radiation. We had to cover ourselves completely, always monitoring the radiation we were exposed to, when we would go into the lab. I can't tell much about the taste, but the air and atmosphere inside was different. It was always way warmer than outside and as soon as we entered we started to feel some kind of pressure. The air was really "heavy" and after a while it was exhausting to breathe. This is of course nowhere near Tchernobyl, but I can imagine how it must have felt.

Curiosity is great in some cases. Just not when trying to touch stuff from a blown up nuclear reactor. Then again just being near it was enough to give people high amounts of radiation. That taste of metal that they felt was a sign of radiation levels being high.

Never really thought about the bucket he brings the tapes out in. But i know a bit about intel analysis and spy craft. If he knows he's being watched, it's probably just his waste bucket that he takes the trash out in every day. You create the pattern of taking out the trash, knowing they're going to check the outdoor bins once you go back in looking for any signs you've been up to something. So you hide the tapes in that vent, you're just doing a regular trash run. Which is also why he took the trash out BEFORE he fed the cat. A sudden increase in thrown out tins would be suspicious that evening, and he was waiting for a specific time.

1) Pure iodine tastes like metal 2) The time between a high dose of radiation and the first time someone vomits indicates their odds of survival. Vomiting at the 2 hour mark means a 50% chance of survival. Dyatlov puked at the 2 hour because he left for the bunker and didn’t go to areas other did. These other guys you see puking within 10-30 minutes… are doomed to a nightmarish demise

After being exposed to high amounts of radiation, sometimes you can survive because the effects aren’t immediate. The radiation basically damaged the cells in the body or just kills them, but there’s a latency period for the full effect to show itself. So, they will die within time. If you wanna learn about the worst instance of this look up a guy named Hisashi Ouchi

Another HBO series that nobody reacts to is “From The Earth To The Moon.” It’s a 10 episode series by Tom Hanks and is outstanding. In the conference scene, it is a little scary how much the old party guy’s speech sounded like our government during COVID. Don’t ask questions, just do as you’re told. This was the way the USSR operated: the State was never wrong. This series is more than a cautionary tale about atomic energy; it’s a story of bureaucratic incompetence. The Soviet Union almost killed Eastern Europe because nobody wanted to take the blame.

Dyatlov really was like that, according to his surviving colleagues. Not all the time, but enough. He threatened people's jobs. He was lying through his teeth when he said the glow was the Cherenkov effect. That happens when the core is underwater. Concerning the denial: You had to pretend the Soviet Union was a worker's paradise where nothing ever went wrong. If you raised an issue, it was all your fault. Perception trumped reality. They set about to build a tractor factory. The work fell behind schedule, but no one wanted to take the hit, so the paperwork moved on schedule. Finally the fire marshall arrived to inspect and found a cement slab. Concerning radiation: The people were told that radiation was good, it cured cancer, it was a sign of technological progress, and if the Americans nuke us, Civil Defense has it covered.

Oh woooooow, so many layers to this. I definitely realized while watching episode 2 that I was expecting responses and reactions with 2023 nuclear knowledge. do NOT do the walking dead. Its sooooooo long and drawn out. It will consume your channel. I've seen channels completely die from getting sucked into doing that series. The fans of that show will never let you stop watching it once you start, and honestly its just the same shit on repeat. I've seen every episode and while its a good show, its definitely not reactor friendly if you want to be able to change it up and have some variety. Stick to shows with shorter/fewer seasons for now. Maybe once you get a significant following, consider doing TWD. Just my 2 cents. I know I'm going to get flamed for this opinion but please reconsider getting invested in TWD, at least for now.

@@LIPPSMACKER I agree with them for what it's worth. If you want less covered shows but that imho are great to react to, maybe try Battlestar Galactica (2x1.5h introductory/pilot miniseries + 4 seasons and a couple optional movies), the miniseries in my opinion works very well as a sort of trailer for the whole show, and if you want something more light-hearted there are also Firefly (1 season + movie) or Scrubs (8 seasons).
